A couple weeks ago I was watching Copper put the finishing touch on their always perfect Superpipe and now I”m seeing the best riders in the world completely dominant it. Today was the Grand Prix Superpipe Finals at Copper Mountain in Colorado. The best pipe riders throwing down for their chance at winning cash, getting points and proving their skills in the stunt ditch. In previous years at Grand Prix, the weather has never cooperated but this year it was a beautiful December day with bluebird skies, no winds and great conditions. I had to chance to meet up with Taylor from AlpineReplay as I was on my way to the truck to get my camera gear. Then it was time to head up to the Superpipe to get some shots and catch the action of the finals when they started. It was a busy Saturday on the slopes and the bars at the base of the mountain offered up perfect views of the action. Plenty of people lined the pipe fence to see their favorite riders go big.
You know sometimes when life gives you lemons, you just make lemonade and rally through to something better. That’s what is currently going on with myself so rather than sit around and do nothing, I’m making the most of my current situation and heading out to Colorado for the Copper Grand Prix. It’s the first stop on the Grand Prix and I’ll get to watch the best freeskiers and snowboarders throw down over a couple days of fun in the sun, powder and whatever else Colorado throws our way. [singlepic id=7059 w=267 h=400 float=] See you guys in Colorado and keep a lookout for a updates on the Grand Prix at Copper. Also if you don’t already follow me on Twitter, you should and there’s a Shayboarder instagram that shows my life in pictures.

While the slopestyle finals were fun to watch yesterday, the pipe finals at the US Snowboarding Grand Prix were definitely the popular choice to watch and be a part of. I started the day catching up with Cope from Neff, Tricia Byrnes and Stacey and John from Fuel TV before making my way up to the pipe to watch the action on the deck. While standing at the top I noticed the “I ride for Kevin” sticker. Kevin wasn’t on scene at this Grand Prix but when it comes to pipe riding, he won’t be forgotten and the seriousness is always there. First up was the women’s pipe final runs with it narrowed down to eight women including top riders Kelly Clark and Gretchen Bleiler. I got a spot next to the fence and sat down to watch the women hit the slopes. Watching Kelly Clark ride in person is amazing and I’d love to see her compete against the boys because she goes so much higher than the other women. She’s taking women’s pipe and pushing it to that next level.
I’ve been anxiously awaiting the Grand Prix stop in Mammoth after watching the earlier stops this season around the US. This week has been a mix of weather from sun to overcast to storming snow but today the weather finally came around and delivered up bluebird sunny skies with the wind coming in towards the end of the day. I headed out in the afternoon to watch the slopestyle finals take place just underneath Chair 6 in front of the Main Lodge. I will admit, being up close and personal to the action is fun but the best seats are in your home watching the live webcasts with the whole run visible to you. I could only see a portion at a time when I was positioned on the different jumps getting photos. [singlepic id=10958 w=1000 h=667 float=] The top of the course was two sets of rails for the riders to start the slopestyle with the rails and finish on the jump line. I only watched the top of the course for the first run before heading down to the jumps for the bigger action.
It was hard to get stoked on today’s finals after getting my gear stolen last night but I made it to the mountain just in time to watch the final runs of practice. The conditions weren’t as nice as yesterday, overcast with some snowfall during today’s finals. From the parking lot, you couldn’t miss the massive superpipe at Copper. [singlepic id=7062 w=400 h=300 float=] After hiking up to the bottom of the superpipe I watched as Shaun White just finished his warm-up runs and captured this moment that says a lot. He’s talking with Keir Dillon and all eyes on him. It certainly will be that way for a while as the Olympics are coming up soon. [singlepic id=7060 w=400 h=267 float=] I ended capturing this shot of him hiking up the pipe, nothing else except pipe in the vision and a crowd of people waiting for the finals. [singlepic id=7059 w=267 h=400 float=] It was rough to watch today’s finals, a lot of the riders had issues with making a clean run. They only had two runs to get on the podium, so it looked like a lot of nerves from the riders. But there were a lot of […]

I made my way down to Copper Mountain in Colorado to watch the first stop of the Grand Prix and a chance for riders to make their way to the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. I missed the women’s qualifiers yesterday but today I was able to watch the men’s qualifiers and tomorrow I’ll see the final best riders throw down in the superpipe. There was a total of 87 male snowboarders in three heats spread out from 9am to 2pm and two runs that determined everything for them. Their best score mattered most and at the end of the day, the best of those riders will continue onto the finals. Shaun White took home 1st place [singlepic id=7032 w=400 h=300 float=] Louie Vito took home 2nd place and stomped his double cork. [singlepic id=7029 w=400 h=300 float=] Greg Bretz took home 3rd for the qualifiers tweaking big! [singlepic id=7024 w=400 h=300 float=] Thanks to Pat Bridges for telling me I shouldn’t miss the Grand Prix contest, because of him I made my way down to check it out. It was insane to see the amplitude of the tricks and be surrounded by riders I’ve heard of for years. I ran […]

I know winter has arrived when the sounds outside my house are filled with the snow plow doing the morning drive-by and the quietness of a town covered in snow. It means waking up a bit earlier, dressing warmer and getting to enjoy shred time on the mountain which is why I live in a resort town. I was expecting December to be a quiet month but some events came up that I decided to attend just before the holidays hit and grounded me back in Steamboat. Here’s a couple events coming up that I’ll be attending and it’s great to see what contests are welcoming bloggers as media. [singlepic id=7007 w=400 h=300 float=] Grand Prix – Copper Mountain I wasn’t planning on attending the Grand Prix but an editor from one of the snowboard magazines convinced me I should go so it was hard to say no. I got my media credential so I’ll be on the scene capturing the event from the sidelines and seeing how it goes down. This years Grand Prix is the first Olympic Qualifying event for halfpipe. I’m actually pretty excited for it, love watching halfpipe and while it’s scary being around “real” photographers […]
