It’s a busy weekend here in Steamboat, so today I was stoked to get to judge the Mavericks Superpipe challenge in the morning and then ride pipe after the contest without having to deal with crowds. Here’s the info on the superpipe challenge: 7th ANNUAL MAVERICKS SUPERPIPE CHALLENGE Skiers and riders will compete in the Maverick’s Terrain for title, cash and prizes during the 7th Annual Mavericks Superpipe on March 22 in Steamboat. The event features competitions for both men and women skiers and snowboarders. The competition will start at 11am followed by an awards ceremony at 2pm in Gondola Square prior to the KyMani Marley Concert. Presented by the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation, sponsored by Ride Sports, Smartwool Mountain Dew, Sprint and Red Bull. A look at the contest from the judges bench I had thought about competing but since I don’t feel consistent with my grabs or spins…I opted out and was asked to judge. I was with two other judges, Ricky from the park crew and a guy from SSWSC (totally forgot his name). We watched each rider/skier take 3 qualifying laps and then for the finals each rider/skier got 2 laps. Tallying up the […]

Managed to make it out onto the mountain today with co-workers. It was a bit overcast and cloudy with some sunshine on the lower mountain. I was riding with Paige, Rochelle, Scott and Michelle for the afternoon. Since it’s still a busy week in town with tourists, I did happen to get a good 20 shots of one-pieces. Got this classic shot of me totally stoked in the lift line next to one! Here’s Paige showing off the mountain and getting ready to drop in We headed up the gondola, then rode down to Storm Peak which the chairlift ride was a bit cold and windy on the way up, made our way over to Sunshine and took some laps there before heading down to the terrain park to finish off with a lap through the halfpipe. Paige showing how we have the whole run to ourselves The snowboarders making turns down Flintlock which was empty for us onlyOn the way down from Sunshine to Storm Peak face, cut into some trees and found a tiny bit of powder left to make turns through.Paige and Rochelle making turnsYou know you had a good day when you take a lap through […]

Lately in Steamboat it’s been cloudy in the morning and sunny in the afternoon. Today I did an afternoon riding session in the halfpipe. It’s packed in town right now, busiest week of the year surprisingly so being in the pipe was less busy than other spots on the mountain. The pipe today was rough for me. I had noticed a bump on the drop in and unfortunately my second pipe run…I went straight for it. Totally slammed face first into the bottom of the pipe. Got up and made my run to the bottom before checking to make sure I was okay. Got a bit of swelling around my right eye where I hit and my goggle pushed into my face. Other than that and a bruised right knee…I was fine. The park today was busier than normal, every run to the Bashor lift there was a line. I ran into the one of the K2 reps, JP rocking the next years Turbo Dream and bindings. I kept to myself and just made laps before heading in for the day. Now I’m watching my face to see if I got a black eye from that fall or just a bruise […]

It is spring in Steamboat. The sun is out constantly, the slush is coming out on the lower mountain and my jacket got changed out for my sunny spring jacket. I managed to make it out on the snow today, just headed straight to the halfpipe to close out the afternoon and ride till the lifts closed. A look at the larger tabletops Boardercross Course got changed up again with bigger jumps to ride over. Friday afternoons are great in the pipe since it’s mostly locals. Got to ride up the chair with a couple guys I knew around town including Andrew who also sports the Shocker gloves. Today we were shocker buddies. Shockerific View Definitely the best way to end out the work week is by riding in the sun. We’re supposed to get a storm this weekend so we’ll see how tomorrow goes here at Steamboat before I head down to ride summit county on Sunday. I got the Premier F1 back from Jakub who had a pretty hard landing on the board. He heard a crack but the board didn’t snap, only his technine baseplates. Totally snapped in half from his landing.

It was a beautiful day outside so I had to make some laps on my lunch/ride break so I would keep my sanity. It was great to listen to music again on the mountain. My favorite Burton headphone beanie (the black one) finally died. So now I’m rocking my 2nd Burton headphone beanie, a bit warmer and tighter but rocks the music great. It was warm enough to take out my Pow Shocker gloves again which I’m always stoked on. Even more stoked is next years gloves from POW. I’m still trying to decide between picking up the High 5 glove or the Mustache glove. I’ll have to show pics of them sometime from the catalog…cause I think Pow puts out some of the best gloves there is…with style! Some guys in the Elkhead lift line noticed my gloves and were astonished of the shocker. The Shocker! I headed up the Christie Chair to Thunderhead today. Some days when the gondola is busy, it’s nice to take the less crowded way to get up to the mid mountain. Here’s a shot looking down at the town of Steamboat. Such a rad place to live especially now since tourist season is […]

It was the perfect weekend to head out of Steamboat to ride another mountain so I took up the opportunity to visit Tom down in Summit County. I left Steamboat Saturday afternoon after taking advantage of some much needed rest. The drive to summit county was really quick, took an hour and a half to make it to Frisco. Stayed the night crashing at some house with rad people. Beer Pong was the game of the night after the X-games went down. Getting up today was definitely rough. Tom and I hit up breakfast and eventually made our way to Keystone to ride for the day. By the time we were on the chairlift, I realized I had left the camera in the car so the pictures I do have are from my camera phone (not the best quality). Snapping a shot on the chairlift We hit up the A51 terrain park for the entire day. I was definitely stoked by the features set up, wall rides, boxes, barrels. Tom hit up the main street jump line which is all the large jumps right below the chairlift. I stuck to hitting the half pipe and some of the features on […]

It was another bluebird sunny day in Steamboat…so of course had to get out on the mountain to enjoy the sun while it lasted. It was pretty mellow in the afternoon. A lot of the tourist traffic has died down so it’s less crowded which is so nice having the mountain back to yourself. I made it up with 3 other co-workers to enjoy the afternoon sun.James, myself, Paige and Sara on Storm Peak We took advantage of the whole mountain, rode up storm peak to take advantage of Triangle 3 trees, then headed over to sunset to get on sundown. The groomed runs were hard packed with some ice in spots. The trees still had powder stashes but some bumps as well. It was really fun just bombing the hill, making turns and testing the new board out. I try to take new boards through every condition possible to get a good idea of how it handles. Some boards are great for certain conditions only. I prefer the boards that I can take anywhere and they still rock. Looking at the clock runs from Sundown From sundown, hit up closet and shadows still finding some good powder turns from […]

This morning it was snowing and by the afternoon the sun had come out for another bluebird day in Steamboat. Today was also the 34th annual cowboy downhill, big Steamboat tradition of having the cowboys and professional bull riders come up to Steamboat, participate in a dual slalom with a jump. I watched a couple minutes and then headed out to hit the slopes. Today was a really good day for me cause I was testing out a new board so it was definitely fun to be riding something new and reviewing it for feedback. Even though it was bluebird out, the upper mountain near Storm Peak was covered in clouds so I kept to lower mountain just free riding on Thunderhead and hit up Heavenly Daze to get some interesting terrain of groomers and bumps to ride through. The crowds are dying down in Steamboat so it’s good to have the mountain more to yourself. I didn’t have all day to ride so I ended up making my way towards pipe to get some time in on the new board. A couple locals riding pipe and I was surprised by the amount of skier tourists riding pipe as well. […]

Made it to the mountain with my house mates Leo and Tara to start off the day. When we rode down to the base, it was definitely lines but the gondola looked less busy than Christie Express so we hit up the singles line in the gondola. We headed over to sundown cause friends were over there but man it was long lift lines and took forever to get up on the chairlift. Tara, Leo and myself heading up sundown At the top finally met up with Chad, Stacia and Ryan to make some turns. Luckly we didn’t spend much time there before heading down to Pony chair to hit up less lines and more powder runs. We made our way out the backcountry out of the ski area boundaries at the top of Pony to head over to the Canyons. It was my first time heading that way, mostly cause I don’t go out of bounds unless I’m with others who know where to go and are familiar with the terrain. Stacia through the out of bounds signs warning you about the dangers It was definitely my roughest day of riding so far this year, first time out in […]

Today was cold…in fact even just going outside was very very cold. It was in the negative degrees all day, -20 on the mountain in the morning and finally when I got to the mountain was still -1 but better than -20 out. Heading up Christie Even though I don’t have balls…I definitely had some to make it out today. Not that I’m a wuss when it comes to cold days, but some days are just harder to push yourself to be out there. Plus I forgot my warmer gloves, so I was rocking my Defcon’s protocol gloves with hand warmers to keep me warmer. It was snowing a little bit, overcast cloudy day, cold and a lot of flat light. I was tempted to head up to the top of the mountain hoping for an inversion of warm air…but with the temps I chose to stay in the lower mountain and ride pipe. Pipe was empty, park was empty. The pipe was rough since it was flat light, hard to see and not my best day in the pipe at all. The boardercross course is done and looked sweet but every time I saw people run through it…it looked […]
