The future is bright for women’s snowboarding and one of those bright stars is pro snowboarder Ellery Hollingsworth, who at 19 has accomplished so much in snowboarding and helps drive women’s snowboarding to higher levels. In 2009, Ellery was the first female rider to land a 1080 in the halfpipe and she recently celebrated her “Ellery Out of Bounds” show on Fuel TV which covers her trip into the BC backcountry with Gatorade. With an incredible list of sponsors, Ellery gives input on women’s gear from Nike 6.0 and Burton to help create better products for the female riders out there. Last winter, Ellery spent some time in the backcountry with a scientist from the Gatorade Sports Science Institute to observe and learn more about the physiological demands of the snowboarding when it comes to hydration and nutrition habits. Ellery continues to update to her blog and twitter on her adventures, but we wanted to check in with Ellery after her Fuel show launch and plans for this winter.
Yesterday I received a call from the local newspaper that they had been recommended to use me in a local piece in the upcoming Steamboat magazine for next winter. I was pretty amazed that my name was tossed around (thanks Jon!) and the article was on local’s favorite runs/parts of the mountain. It meant today being on the mountain to meet up with them and get a shot for the paper/magazine that they can use. [singlepic id=8116 w=400 h=300 float=] I was totally up for being the halfpipe girl since I do enjoy riding halfpipe during my ride breaks. I’m still not going pro anytime but I enjoy cranking the music and trying. [singlepic id=8115 w=400 h=300 float=] So at lunch today I met up with John from the paper who was going to take my photo and it’s a good thing I never went into professional snowboarding/modeling because I can’t control my nerves when the time comes. I’ve ridden pipe thousands of times and today I was soo nervous that every run got worse. But I think we got a shot that might work so we’ll see in the future how it comes out and I’m stoked to be […]

You know it’s a rough week when you might not even get outside to enjoy the snow during the week, unfortunately that was me this week. With SIA approaching, it means less ride time on the mountain but luckily today I spent my hour lunch break making park laps with some of the instructors. Steamboat hasn’t gotten any snow worth mentioning in a couple weeks, couple light dustings and you find yourself totally up for more park riding since pow riding is not happening yet. [singlepic id=7475 w=300 h=400 float=] I rode up the gondola with Philip and Doug who wanted to freeride (mostly cause Philip effed up his shoulder). I wanted to ride park and headed down to the park to meet up with Chris and Maggie from snowboarderguide.com and Bec for some fun freestyle laps. [singlepic id=7476 w=400 h=300 float=] My favorite feature in the park is the corrogated tube because I can ride up over it, ollie it, tail tap it or just plain stall on top of it. It’s a blast and not lethal at all.
I wasn’t sure if I’d hit up the mountain today but as soon as I made it to the top of the superpipe and had my best run…there was no turning back on what a fun afternoon it would be. I came up alone since I had just dropped off Mike at the airport and like any riding day, you always run into someone you know so I was lucky I ran into Claire for the afternoon. [singlepic id=7451 w=400 h=300 float=] Today was really busy on the mountain since it’s a 3 day weekend for most people (MLK tomorrow) but sticking to park and pipe was perfect for avoiding the crowds. Claire and I stuck to pipe runs and didn’t hit up Lil’ Rodeo till the last couple runs. The best most awesome trick of the day was hitting the first box in Lil’Rodeo again, it’s now ollie on to ride it and I ended up hitting it finally. Craig who is an instructor helped me in the pipe with airing out, he told me to imagine the lip higher than it is and that made me air out for the last couple runs in the pipe with him.
It was another day to enjoy a ride break, the sun was out and couldn’t resist heading to the snow to enjoy it. I joined a couple co-workers for a ride break to the halfpipe, we’re having an employee pipe competition on Wednesday so we figured some practice time would be good. Most of my co-workers are just starting to get comfortable in the halfpipe, which is always fun to watch people get acquainted with it. Our employee competition is pretty easy and fun, you get 1 point for going through the pipe, 2 points for going up the wall and 3 points for airing out. I’m trying to get the 3 points for airing out. Rochelle riding up the wall Daniel is our amazing intern this year but he’s one of the local athletes that kills it. He was seeing spots from his crash earlier but still hit the pipe no problems. We’ll see how tomorrow goes with the employee competition and it looks to be another beautiful day in Steamboat.

I woke up at 7am to see that there was no new snow and negative temperatures so I crawled back into bed. Took a late start after sleeping in and headed up the gondola to do a fast run down Heavenly Daze to the halfpipe. The Lotus-R/Force combo has been keeping me really happy, been rocking it in the pipe, freeriding and powder. I had a couple falls in the pipe but no pain so it was a good day. Despite the bluebird skies and sun shining all day, it was cold! I stayed warm until 3pm when the sun went down and the negative temps started to hit me. The fun thing about halfpipe is you can just lap it all day, I didn’t really wanna deal with crowds or riding alone for freeriding so I just rode halfpipe. I had good runs and I had bad runs. MC came out to ride the pipe, so we made a couple laps through. I like watching MC ride the pipe, he’s a good rider and I definitely need to push myself to step up tricks.I was surprised it wasn’t busy at the park today, same people making […]

I was nervous about riding today but I was going a little nuts and needed to get outside on the snow. The gondola had a line full of people during my ride break so I hit up Christie Express to get up to the pipe quick and make quicker laps. I made a really short video of today, because I was riding by myself it’s from my point of view getting up on the mountain and showing what the park looks like right now. Sorry there’s not much footage, quiet day on the slopes when you ride by yourself. Steamboat 12/31/08 from Shayboarder on Vimeo. Since the superpipe opened yesterday I wanted to just go ride superpipe. It’s still pretty busy in town so I wanted to stay away from a lot of the crowds and dealing with people. The superpipe had some sheet ice going on, but was a fun ride and I was surprised there were a lot of people just hanging out above it watching. Pipe season has begun! So basically any day it’s not a powder day I’m usually riding halfpipe. For me it’s not scary, I like riding up the vert and it’s fun […]

I was really stoked to get the invite and be able to attend the event, even for just one night. I took photos and did a write up for Transworld Business, but also attended on behalf of my blog so killed two birds with one stone. As soon as that is up on TWS Business, I’ll link to it.
The season is winding down here in Steamboat with closing day on Sunday, April 6th so I made sure to hit up the mountain today for a ride break. Beautiful day from the top of the gondola looking at Storm Peak I managed to make it up and met up with Brent who is crashing at the house from Virginia. I took him on some tree runs and still found some leftover powder which is getting heavier to ride through but still fun. My favorite: tree runs and powder to turn in Brent wasn’t used to the trees/powder so it made him work a lot harder to make the runs.I had to head back in to finish up work after taking runs with Brent. I rode down and took some laps through the halfpipe which is pretty much dead for the season. One wall is complete slush and the other is icy death. Today the halfpipe was busy since AASI was holding a level III exam.

I was stoked to hit up Snowmass after hearing good things about the mountain. It definitely lived up to the expectations, offering up everything in terms of riding. It also offered up the best most successful gaper hunt photos of my trip. Seriously so many one-pieces, it was like Christmas for me! Since I went to see Blind Melon in Aspen last night, this morning was a later start of 10am. It was a beautiful bluebird day out with a couple clouds. I spent the morning checking out the halfpipe and making laps through the terrain park after some warm up freeride turns. Hitting up the chairlift that runs directly over the park I just ride the halfpipe, not into the big jumps or bigger rails so when the terrain park has the halfpipe inside of it…I take the side of the run and make sure to stay out of the flow of the rails/jumps on my way to the halfpipe. One cool feature was taking the bridge over a run underneath…you could just bomb over the thing.I was rocking another board for the Shred Betties board test… Kelly made it out of work and onto the mountain by 1pm […]
