In the days leading up to Holy Oly, I was trying to explain why I would fly up to Seattle just for this contest but it comes down to the experience of it. It’s a northwest competition that’s based around the fun and promotion of snowboarding without worrying about winning or losing, making money or being in the magazines. It’s seeing the up and comers riding next to the legends of snowboarding. The northwest breeds some amazing riders, they probably won’t have Target sponsorships or win the Olympics but these riders have style. That’s Holy Oly: Style, fun and good vibes. It’s worth the plane ticket every time. I grew up riding in the northwest, specially Snoqualmie started my snowboarding. It’s fun to go back to the mountains with all the memories and good times. Today was a reminder to the NW with a mix of overcast to rain, heavy snow conditions. This year’s Holy Oly featured tube town which a variety of tubes to hit and then the big quarterpipe that was much bigger than last year. It took some time to realize how big when the riders were barely airing out at first. Eventually with straight drops from […]

Events like the Holy Oly make me miss being in the northwest, it’s partially the people but also the vibe of just having fun at a event/contest. It’s not about the money, fame, spectators or sponsors…it’s just hanging out having a good time watching people throw down on a quarterpipe. This was my second Holy Oly which was a great way to end my trip to Seattle. [singlepic id=7866 w=400 h=267 float=] I woke up early Saturday the most sore I’ve ever been in my life from decking the pipe at Stevens but that didn’t stop me from having a great day! Gorio picked me up and after a much needed coffee stop, we headed up to Summit at Snoqualmie. The Holy Oly is always at Summit East (Hyak) but last year the mudslide moved it to Summit West so it’s great to see it back in the original destination. Unfortunately Summit East is still not open since the mudslide which meant everyone attending had to hike up to the quarterpipe. Despite the snow conditions this year, they were able to move snow and non-snow to build up the quarterpipe for the event. We arrived early just in time for […]

I grew up in the pacific northwest so no matter where I move around the country, home is always Seattle, Washington. So I’ll be heading to Seattle this weekend to spend time with family, visit friends and for shredding. I’ll be visiting a couple snowboard companies while in Seattle, borrowing board/bindings from C3 (thank you Johan) and writing about my adventures from the road. This trip includes company visits (two new ones), snowboarding Stevens Pass & Summit at Snoqualmei and a day at Summit East for the Holy Oly 2010! It’s a quick trip so I’ll be back in the rockies by Sunday morning just in time for some laps in Summit County before heading home. If you are remotely near Snoqualmie Pass, head up this Saturday to Holy Oly! It’s a blast to watch the huge quarterpipe action and shred…plus there’s cobradogs & beer on hand to fill you up. I am stoked to head back to watch the action and see some friends throw down. [singlepic id=7738 w=555 h=851 float=] If you come to the Holy Oly, come find me and say hi! I’ll still be updating the blog from the road but with less opportunity to […]

It was luck that my WA trip was timed perfectly with the Holy Oly. I’ve heard about it for years and wished I had the chance to go but it never worked out until this year. Friday night I flew into Seattle, crashed on Garv’s couch and carpooled up to the Summit at Snoqualmie to finally check out the Holy Oly on Saturday. This was my first time back to ride Snoqualmie in 7 years and it was a great comeback to my original mountain. Huge thanks to Krush for running it and hooking me up with ticket to ride during the day. Jesse Burtner said it best regarding the Holy Oly, “it’s not even really a contest it’s kind of a party.” The quarterpipe was insane, 28 feet high is what I heard and the riders were killing it with their own individual styles. I took photos at the event, just a couple feet from each rider in the air and so amazed to be there. Garvie loading up the van in the AM Holy Oly 2009 The morning started out with cloudy skies but the bluebird skies came out when the contest was ready to […]

This winter has been really busy which is great but also a lot of time away from home (also great and sometimes bad). I know my dog Capita misses me and my friend Amy tells me that her heart breaks every time I leave town. It does make me appreciate home when I’m here. Between keeping a full time job and running off to do snowboard things, I’ve been on the mountain and enjoying some time off the mountain. I haven’t rode as much as I’d like but I’m still riding, still have a job that pays the bills and looking forward to more riding as the season progresses. I’m lucky that Colorado has consistent seasons and the longevity is good to have.So I’ve been planning on some awesome trips to end the season out. Here’s a look at what’s coming up and unfortunately the season will end on a bad note but until then I’m gonna have fun and enjoy it! Washington Shred-A-Thon I was born and raised in Washington state and I’ll be heading back there to snowboard February 20-28th. I’m quite aware that I’ll be leaving light fluffy powder for not the best WA season. I fly […]
