I was reading today about a local Big Sky snowboarder and instructor, Paul Overby, who was nearly beaten to death after trying to stop two thief’s from stealing his friends moped. He has a website which is tracking his progress through multiple surgeries. His medical expenses are estimated to be $2,000,000 and his friends/family are reaching out for help. ‘ I listed his trust fund below where donations can be sent. This is a horrific thing to hear about and I definitely am going to contribute what money I can. Thanks to Rome Snowboards putting this up and bringing attention to shredder in need. A fundraiser will be held on November 14th. Here’s the story about Paul Overby: Late at night, Tuesday September 16th, 2008 Paulie had just finished walking his friend home safely from a bar, and noticed several men attempting to steal his friend’s moped. He had lived in Bozeman for over 3 years at that point, and had never seen these young men before, but decided to stop them anyways. Paul attempted to tell them ‘to back off’ and ‘just leave’ when one young man jumped him from behind, and hit him in the back of his […]

KC: I’m a 30 year old snowboarder from the suburbs of Washington, DC. I spent 8 years teaching people to ride at Massanutten, VA and moved to Vermont in 2003 at my wife’s, Courtney, suggestion. Winter is longer in Vermont! I spent 4 years on the American Association of Snowboard Instructors (AASI) Snowboard Team working with members, sponsors and other industry types to try to make snowboarding and learning to snowboard better. I work and ride at Okemo Mountain Resort in VT. Shay: What is your job title? KC: I wear several hats: Okemo Recreation Manager, Okemo Ski and Ride School Clinician, AASI-E Board of Examiners. Shay: Did your parents question your job choice? KC: When I dropped out of college to teach in 1997 they did. After 2 years of fighting about it, they saw that I was really happy and decided to support my decision. It’s been a much warmer relationship since then! They were also very supportive when I decided to go back to school to finish in 2002. Shay: What was your first set up? KC: […]

Even though I was 15 years old, I made my way to the hiring clinics the beginning of the 98-99 season so I could become an instructor. It took weeks of off-snow clinics and on-snow clinics but I achieved the status of snowboard instructor. In the beginning I was very nervous during practice teaching in front of peers. But it becomes necessary to teach in front of your peers if you plan to continue onto certification. Once you get in front of students, confidence is key. A confident instructor wins over the students even if you struggle for a second during classes. Teaching snowboarding is fun…snowboarding is fun…so make the lesson fun as well! When I shadowed level II exams years later, I found that the best instructors were the ones that made each lesson fun while you completed the tasks. After years of teaching, I taught every age possible how to snowboard. The youngest was 4 years old and the oldest was 70 years old. I learned how to teach to the student. Each student you need to win over, you need to teach so they understand you. I once taught a Microsoft employee who was my most difficult […]
