Not many snowboard companies are creating their own content let alone videos that go in depth into original stories. Planet Earth Outerwear fits a different mold and not long ago introduced their Perspective series to the public. They document real life inspiring stories about people in our sport and bring something to the table, so rare that it’s a breathe of fresh air to our industry. I caught up with Planet Earth’s Ryan McBride and Jason Levinthal to find out the story behind Perspectives. Shay: How did you come up with the idea for Perspectives? Most other brands in action sports are all doing the same thing as each other when it comes to marketing. They pay a high profile athlete a lot of money to wear their products and then promote it to consumers. We wanted our marketing to not only stand out from the rest, but also give back to the sports we live for, by documenting and promoting stories about real-life people in our sports that are making a difference with an inspiring perspective that you may not have otherwise known of or considered. The Perspectives tag line is as literal as it gets, “Not all bros are […]

Working in the snowboard industry is having the best of both worlds but few people give a glimpse into the behind the scenes of what it takes to live, work and play in this industry. Blotto is one of those rare industry individuals who is sharing his stories, travels and skills inside his world of being Burton’s principal photographer. When I first stumbled across Blotto’s website, Blotto Photto, I was amazed at the effort and the articulate work that Blotto was bringing to the masses. His writing has a clear voice that draws you into the conversation while his photos give you insight into the picture making you feel like you are there with him along the journey. I caught up with Dean Blotto Gray to find out more about how he started his site, what it means to be Burton’s principal photographer and what his future adventures are coming up. Shay: Blottophotto gives readers an in-depth look into your work within the snowboard industry and photography, did you go into documenting your experiences with a plan or just figured it out as you went? Blotto: Before I launched blottophotto 2.0 (July 2008), I knew exactly what I wanted to […]

A couple weeks ago when Idea Mensch approached me about an interview for their website, I immediately headed to their website to see what it was about. I soon found out that there motto, “Featuring people with good ideas from all over the Internet” crossed many borders throughout the webosphere and to be one of the interviews would be something fun. The interview is now up on Idea Mensch and I want to thank Evan for letting me be a part of it! Check it out here [singlepic id=7511 w=500 h=400 float=]

Behind each snowboard graphic is someone’s ideas. A graphic can be born from a long car ride with friends, a silly design they walk by, in a dream they have…the list goes on. Each year there are thousands of graphics created, around an image, idea, story. It’s the first thing customers notice when they look at a snowboard and it’s always apparent that people do care about graphics when it comes to their snowboards. Behind the Graphic is a series of interviews that I’ll be collecting over time with various artists/designers from companies who have designed graphics coming out on snowboards in 2009-2010. Behind the Graphics Interviews (updated with links as times goes on) Ephka on 2009-2010 Capita Snowboards Erik Van Hauer on 2009-2010 Rome Addictive Collection Rome Jonathan Rodriguez on 2007 Salomon Octopus If you know someone who has created a board graphic for 09-10, send them my way at shayboarder@gmail.com

My first encounter with Willie McMillion was on the drive up to Jackson Hole where I overheard a conversation of him talking to Drago about “dick holes.” I made it to Jackson prepared for every possible thing he could say and found out more than “dick holes” about Willie. If you don’t know Willie, he’s that guy who created good wax, speaks the truth (whether cussing or not) and got fired for his commentating at Quiksilver’s Natural Selection. So needless to say…I wanted to do a interview with him to catch up on what he’s up to. Here’s a glimpse into the un-edited, upfront world of Willie. STEPHANIE PETERKA PHOTO Shay: Who is Willie McMillion? Willie: hold on, let me take some acid, i’ll get right back to that. Shay: Is it hard to work and play in Jackson, Wyoming? Willie: no, i got this shit dialed. Shay: How did you get your start in the snowboard industry? Willie: i grew up poor and hand to fend for myself. so i rubbed two pennies together and made a dime. Shay: What are some changes you would like to see with the snowboard industry? Willie: i would like to see kids […]
