Born in Wisconsin, bred to be a Packers fan, but grew up in Minnesota. I played team sports all my life, but hockey was my religion growing up. I moved to Colorado in ’96 and I can still remember my first drive into the mountains. I had never been on a board or skis, but from that moment on I knew was gonna get on a Snowboard. Shay: How has snowboarding changed your life? Joe: Snowboarding was not just an activity for weekends, It became my lifestyle and more literally, my Life. From the way I dressed, to the color of my hair, to the friends I made in school. I was hooked, and it all was all influenced by the mid-ninety’s snowboard culture and more importantly, the Mack Dawg Film, “Simple Pleasures.” Shay: How did you get your start in the […]

Location: Winter Park, CO Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to softpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the Jones Carbon Flagship with Union Charger bindings and Vans Ferra boots size 8. Size: 161 cm First Impression: Wow, the carbon combination definitely makes for a lightning fast, aggressive board for charging riders. Weight: Lighter than average. Flex: The Carbon Flagship is on the stiffer end, it’s designed for aggressive freeriding. I haven’t ridden the normal Flagship to compare it yet. There is a good amount of torsional flex between the bindings for quick edge response. The nose felt a bit softer than the tail but overall both were on the stiffer side for mountain handling. The Carbon Flagship features a directional rocker. There is more rocker on the nose side of the board, camber underfoot and subtle rocker towards the tail of the board. The Carbon Flagship also features a blunt nose. Turning: Insanely quick edge to edge…that’s what I wrote down in my notes for the Carbon Flagship. It’s light, quick and as soon as you initiate a turn, you are riding that turn. It’s not meant for the faint-hearted, this board will keep you on your toes (or heels). Setup: I rode the Jones Mothership with Union Trilogy bindings and Vans Ferra boots size 8. Size: 154 cm (but technically this size doesn’t exist, it’ll be 152 or 156) First Impression: I started laughing out of excitement when I realized how fast, stable and how the board could carve. It was a good laugh out of delight. Weight: Average. Flex: The Mothership is based off of the men’s Flagship so it’s built for freeriding, charging and riding mountains with smooth lines. The flex is on the stiffer end with a tad softer nose and more stiffer responsive tail to help drive the board into turns and powder lines. Torsionally it’s a bit softer so you still get good edge to edge response. Overall on the scale it’s identified as a 6 for flex and I agree. The Mothership is camber underfoot and rocker just a couple inches outside of the inserts to the contact points. Turning: You can make a variety of turns with the Mothership, it was really smooth on long drawn out S turns and locked in without feeling locked in. On […]

For year three, Jones Snowboards continues to be a strong dominating company for the soul of snowboarding – freeriding. For 2013, Jones introduces three women’s boards to the line-up (a splitboard, a freeride board and a mountain twin board), the Carbon Series to lighten the load and a line of backpacks to assist on the journey. Jones Flagship Ideal for big mountain free riding and fall line freestyle. Coveted for it’s stability at speed and wall crawling edge grip, the Flagship is a big mountain board you can trust your life to. Features directional rocker, blunt nose, mellow magne-traction, FSC wood core, full wood core, ALU protect, flip flop base, carbon stringers, recycled base, sintered base. Setup: I rode the Jones Hovercraft with Union Milan bindings (and my Union Team bindings in CA) and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 156cm. First Impression: At first glimpse, you don’t think the board will handle non-power conditions but it does and it’s a totally fun way to ride the mountain. In powder, you feel like you don’t even need to stay afloat with much effort. Weight: Average Flex: Softer nose on the hovercraft, stiff tail and the stiffer flex between the bindings towards the tail of the board, giving you a powerful board because except for the nose you feel like you are riding camber down the mountain. The hovercraft features rocker towards the nose of the board with camber underfoot. In powder, the rocker on the nose noticeably helps the board float in the deeper powder. Turning: Despite how the hovercraft looks, it actually handles like camber and has an effective edge for holding turns on groomers and hardpacked conditions. […]

Find your line and ride it – that’s certainly what Jeremy Jones did when it came to designing and starting his own snowboard company last year. In year two, Jones Snowboards looks stronger than ever with freeriding boards that bring out the pure hearts of riders. With such a big name and team behind the brand, the boards are the soul of snowboarding and certainly stand out from the crowd at SIA. Year two also means progression for the boards, smaller sizes for the ladies/smaller riders and more splitboards for the riders going deeper into the mountains. The new L series gives smaller riders options for snowboards like the flagship 154cm, solution splitboard 154cm, mountain twin splitboard 154cm. Jones will also be releasing sofgoods with t-shirts, hoodies and trucker hats with a couple different Jones designs on them. The Solution The premier backcounry assault weapon is back with pop, stability and float in an all-terrain splitboard. Featuring inner and outer magne traction, directional rocker profile with traditional camber underfoot, forgiving flex pattern you can ride centered or setback, blunt nose, FSC wood core, full wood core, flip flop base, carbon stringers, recycled base, sintered base, ALU project.
For over two decades we’ve seen Jeremy Jones dropping into steeps, chutes and backcountry that continues to blow our minds. So it’s no surprise that when launching his own snowboard company, Jeremy Jones would give as much dedication, fluidity and passion behind it as he does in his snowboarding. 2010-2011 is the year of the Jones, bringing back freeriding into the souls of riders and introducing a love for boards meant to charge the mountain. All of the Jones boards are manufactured by Nidecker with the Jeremy Jones touch and 1% of sales are contributed to environmental groups around the world. For technology, Jones snowboards uses a directional rocker which is a hybrid rocker/camber flex pattern with more tip rocker than tail rocker and a slight camber between the bindings. On the mountain twin, Jones uses camrock which is a rocker/camber flex pattern with an evenly balanced tip and tail rocker with slight camber between the bindings (seen on YES and Nidecker models as well). Jones also kept with a mellow magne traction to improve edge grip with multiple contact points along the running length of the board.
