Yesterday I left a snowy and busy Steamboat Springs to get a easy day of traveling for today on my first trip to Silverton, Colorado. With a sleepover in Summit County and no ambition to spend this morning on the mountain, I was able to sleep in and hit the road when I had enough time to make it to Silverton before dark. Before today I’ve never ventured to southern Colorado or even past Glenwood Springs/Aspen area so it was a great drive just to see parts of Colorado I’ve never been to. The best part of the drive was heading into the mountain passes. It reminded me of Washington except a bit sketchier. [singlepic id=7230 w=400 h=267 float=] Driving over Red Mountain Pass was insane and I can’t imagine it during a snowstorm since there’s no guardrails and a decent drop if you went off the road. I went slow and enjoyed the views especially when I started seeing the abandoned mining shacks and areas off the highway. [singlepic id=7229 w=400 h=267 float=] Right before the sun was going down in the mountains, I made it to Silverton! Definitely a quiet mountain town nestled in between high peaks and […]

Along each journey a snowboarder makes, there is one consistent and reliable mode of transportation that gets you from home to shredding. For me, a truck named Betsy the Toyota Tacoma has made every journey, every snowboard trip and has safely brought me home each time. I bought her brand new in 2004 and now 24,000 dollars later I have just made my final payment. [singlepic id=5167 w=448 h=298 float=] I figured if my truck had a name, it might last longer and treat me better. She’s been along for the journey of being dependent to independent. I knew when I bought her that I needed to buy a manual, that I drove too often in the snow and being able to downshift through snowy conditions would be beneficial, unfortunately for me when I bought her I couldn’t drive a stick-shift, I never learned so I bought my brand new truck without ever driving it (thanks dad for test driving it for me). As soon as I got home, I learned to drive it on the street I grew up on…stalling it a lot. After a day of learning to drive a stick-shift, I hit the highway and […]
