I’d been fighting off getting sick but figured a day off and a good night’s sleep was enough for a powder day today. It definitely made me feel good enough to commit to today at June. The snow has been dumping nonstop in Mammoth and June, delivering more feet of snow. By today it was up to four feet at June, perfect for early bird turns. I headed to pick up Sarah in town for the month and we ended up with a full truck of Aussies. Despite avy control and weather delays, June was ideal for the day with no lines and fresh powder. The steep terrain and trees on the face was exactly what we wanted and the powder was deep! I love Mammoth but definitely enjoy the quietness and solitude of June. Upon arriving at June the deepness of the snow was apparent in the shoveled path to the lift [singlepic id=11117 w=300 h=443 float=] The aussie boys charging below J1 lift [singlepic id=11118 w=500 h=281 float=] Today I grabbed up the 2012 NS Lotus to see the powder turns on it and the 2012 Rome Madisons for my binding.
A quick drive down the highway from Mammoth lies June Mountain. Nestled back in the trees with views of peaks and the lakes, June is the sister mountain that’s quietly overlooked. June opened in mid-December but I hadn’t gotten the chance to ride there until yesterday when timing worked out with friends to head over and get in some laps. Despite a late start of 10am at the mountain, we arrived to front row parking and tons of powder to be enjoyed. [singlepic id=10427 w=500 h=281 float=] While Mammoth has the huge terrain, June has the quiet slow lifts but no lines and some amazing tree riding. It felt like being put back in Alpental with pillow drops instead of cliffs, no resort feeling of any kind, tree turns galore from mellow to steep and local’s have the say. [singlepic id=10435 w=500 h=281 float=] My Capita BSOD took quite a beating from early season but Adam patched it up for me and it was good to go for some awesome powder riding. I need to update the review with how its handled this year especially in the deep powder its been in. Feels so good to have it back under […]
