The vibe at June Mountain has always been great. It’s a mountain that is full of good times. I finally talked the skier into joining me for a June day despite the park not being insanely huge right now. We ended up having a great day on the slopes, working on tricks in the mini park. He worked on spins and I worked on hitting more features. There’s still only one run open at June but it’s one run that has soft snow conditions and barely anyone sharing it with you. We worked on switch riding for the run each time and ended up hiking park a lot of the day. Today was a good day for myself. I finally started riding the long lift tower (for some reason metal tubes scare me) and ended up working on bonks on the barrels and a couple tricks on the flat box. Excited to head up to South Lake Tahoe tomorrow to ride Heavenly the next two days. Always fun to check out other mountains and get a feel for conditions around California right now.

It felt really good to start 2012 on the slopes. Snowboarding makes me happy. It might not have been powder or a ton of terrain, but sometimes it can be one run doing something you love to make it matter. I hope everyone else enjoyed a good start to 2012. This time of year means new boots, specifically 12-13 Vans Boots to test out. Last year I got on board with their wear test to offer feedback (like I had with the 100 day perspective) in intervals of trying the boots after certain days. Since I don’t review boots on Shayboarder, it’s fun to be able to give feedback to them early enough to impact future boot design. I’m currently on the Ferra women’s boots testing them out. Conditions today were great on the one run that was open. You could ride up to the lift each time and only encounter a small line if any. Despite no new snow, the current snow is holding up good. I watched a lot of new snowboarders progressing and earning their learning time. The new Signal Snowboards rail was at the base of the chairlift, looks like the park crew will be adding […]

Hard to believe the year is coming to an end but at the same time 2012 means unlimited possibilities for the future. Friday on the snow meant heading over to June Mountain to avoid the crowds and have a run practically to myself. Luckily for me, the June park crew was out riding so I didn’t have to ride alone. The one run open is Mambo but it’s in great condition for snow. It’s soft, easy to ride and isn’t bumped out or icy. The park has a couple more features and crew changed things up so definitely a small variety to hit. Today I finally rode the barrel bonk feature and each day I’ll try to hit one more feature.

After the madness at Mammoth yesterday, I opted to take a 15 minute drive down to the highway to June Mountain. Termed “California’s best kept secret,” it really is a hidden gem of a mountain. Last season I had my best powder days at June, so deep and never tracked out so you had endless runs to yourself. This year June’s been working hard to make snow and get the mountain up and running, they only opened last weekend. When I pulled up to the parking lot at 11am, I had front row parking. I grabbed my gear, took the J1 chairlift up to the base of the lodge and smiled in amazement. I was starting at no lines in front of the J2 chairlift and barely anyone on the slopes. It was a dream come true, I had to pinch myself. Sure there’s only one run open but you have that one run to yourself. I’d rather have that than 30 runs packed to the masses of people. I went to June alone for the day but met up with Sam and Bobby from June Mountain’s park crew. We got in a couple laps together, trying out the features […]

With June Mountain closing, it was an easy decision to plan to ride June one day this weekend before they close for the season. We packed up the car, loaded it up with our gear, picked up the aussie crew and headed up the highway for the easy drive to June. On the way, I got the call that my brother was driving into town and would meet up for riding. It worked out perfectly for timing and it was a great decision for June. There were no lines and a mix of sunny to cloudy conditions but the mountain and parks were ours. For most of the day, the skier and Nosey switched out filming each other. The shots ended up coming out great especially the follow cam [singlepic id=11412 w=500 h=334 float=] It was a blast riding with everyone, especially getting out with my brother who normally wouldn’t ski the park. We ended up getting him to get air and he did hit a jump by the end of the day! Here’s one of his airs of the day.
Living in Mammoth Lakes has been a dream and having Mammoth in my backyard has been better than imagined but having June nearby is the icing on the cake. It’s a different vibe than Mammoth and it reminds me of the ski hills back home (not resorts) except with amazingly good parks. I’ve had great pow days and great park days at June this year and today was a day to get back there before they close up for the season on April 24. The skier and I headed up for park laps with a borrowed GoPro for the day to get in some footy. We ended up meeting Sam, June’s Terrain Park Manager at the top of the park and talked to him for a bit. This whole season I’ve been really stoked on June’s parks, the easy stuff for me to the bigger stuff for the skier. Sam was with the Signal Snowboard crew in town to film a Every Third Thursday Video coming up. Can’t wait to see how it comes out!
Sunday Funday. That was what I hoped for today as we gathered a crew to head to June Mountain and it definitely turned out to be the ideal Sunday Funday. Packed up the truck full (literally) with people and snowboards/skis for the 25 minute trek down the highway to the less crowded but awesome June Mountain. Showed up at 11am, parked 20 feet from the chairlift and hit the slopes for a warm day on the mountain. Lapping June’s Main Park with no lines and good people. Love those days on the mountain. Here’s a shot of Nosey on the jump line at June.
After the last couple days of powder with high winds I was ready for a mellow day like today and crossing the fingers for no winds. We ended up heading up to Mammoth Main Lodge and after driving by chair #2 and seeing a monstrosity for a line, we grabbed our gear and headed to June Mountain for the day. [singlepic id=11225 w=400 h=509 float=] June was sunny, no lines and some winds. I figured the snow would be good at June but I was wrong, it was heavy bumped out suntouched snow that was nothing like the powder I was expecting. But the laps were quick and the skier got to check out June finally. Thanks to Trotter, we stopped by the Main Lodge Demo Shop to get some Lib Tech NAS powder skis so the skier could try them out and get off his park skis for the conditions. [singlepic id=11226 w=500 h=334 float=] Playing in some of the leftover snow we could find, even in the trees it was a bit too heavy and sticky. [singlepic id=11227 w=500 h=334 float=] Rode for a couple hours and headed back home to Mammoth. Hoping the top opens and backside […]

I’d been fighting off getting sick but figured a day off and a good night’s sleep was enough for a powder day today. It definitely made me feel good enough to commit to today at June. The snow has been dumping nonstop in Mammoth and June, delivering more feet of snow. By today it was up to four feet at June, perfect for early bird turns. I headed to pick up Sarah in town for the month and we ended up with a full truck of Aussies. Despite avy control and weather delays, June was ideal for the day with no lines and fresh powder. The steep terrain and trees on the face was exactly what we wanted and the powder was deep! I love Mammoth but definitely enjoy the quietness and solitude of June. Upon arriving at June the deepness of the snow was apparent in the shoveled path to the lift [singlepic id=11117 w=300 h=443 float=] The aussie boys charging below J1 lift [singlepic id=11118 w=500 h=281 float=] Today I grabbed up the 2012 NS Lotus to see the powder turns on it and the 2012 Rome Madisons for my binding.
I haven’t made my way to June Mountain as much as I’d like but I finally went back to check it out and see what it was like on a non-powder day. As we pulled up, the parking lot was busy for June but still not busy at all. I think June has the most amazing scenery surrounding the mountain, just breathtaking views and the mountain itself offers more mellow vibes with a fun park. I ended up taking out the Arbor Swoon for the day, it’s a new board for Arbor coming out in 2012. Since we hung out on the more mellow terrain, I got to really test it playing around, riding switch and carving before taking it into the pipe and park. [singlepic id=10795 w=500 h=281 float=] June has taco tuesdays where you can enjoy tacos in their taco (halfpipe). I’m quite jealous because it sounds so much fun but I work on Tuesdays! Someday! The halfpipe was a blast though and trying to get the balls to hit a barrel feature at the bottom after the pipe.
