Location: Mt. Baker, WA and Thompson Pass, Alaska Snow Conditions: Mixture of heavier fresh snow to lighter snow. Setup: I rode the K2 Panoramic with Spark R&D Burner bindings and Vans size 8 women’s boots. Size: 158cm. First Impression: I got this board blindly and it more than did the job for a splitboard setup. Good all-around mountain splitboard. Weight: Average Ease of Use: The Panoramic was easier to set up since I had already set up a Venture splitboard the season before. I had all the things needed (board, voile system, sparks bindings) so it just meant sitting down and setting it up to my stance. The K2 climbing skins that came with the setup weren’t bad but definitely had some days where snow was able to get into the skins and had to be cleared to continue skinning up. Flex: The K2 Panoramic was definitely more forgiving than expected. The all-terrain rocker combo with bambooyah made it a good medium range for flex on the mountain. Longitudinally it had the bambooyah feel to it that was lively and poppy on the board but torsionally it had a softer more forgiving feel. I really liked that when I rode […]

Location: Winter Park, CO Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to softpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the K2 Agogo bindings on the K2 Highlite with my Vans Ferra Boots size 8. Time to set up the binding: Pretty normal time to set up the bindings. It was more about making sure the adjustments for the auto strap fit so took a couple minutes to get it dialed and tested. Fit: I tried the Agogo bindings in the medium size which have fit my boots fine in the past and for this pair. The toe strap was secure around the toebox on my boot and the width of the binding worked with my boot just fine. First Impression: Continues to be the Agogo with Auto, all mountain riding and good comfort. Appearance: The Agogo comes in black for 2013 with a subtle addition of blue and silver colors implemented in the binding. The black also features jagged patchwork that blends in really well with the binding. It’s good looking in the black and I like the overall look of it. Comfort: Good comfort overall on the Agogo. This binding has padding in the baseplate to cushion and absorb bumpy terrain while the straps keep […]

Whether it’s your first time in the backcountry or you just need a pack to carry your gear around; having a snowboard specific backpack makes all the difference. K2 Snowboards offered up the 11-12 K2 Sentinel backpack for a giveaway, so I asked you guys why you needed it. The comments were a good mix of responses and it was tough to select a winner. I sorted through and selected 30 top comments and then randomly selected a winner from those top people. [singlepic id=12488 w=455 h=429 float=] The Winner is Mason B. Mason had it rough last winter and has been needing to replace his stolen backpack in order to make this winter an awesome one! Well congrats to Mason who will for sure get off to a great start this season with this new pack! Mason’s Winning Comment “I need this backpack because last winter I was helping out at a youth snowboard event in Kamloops, BC, Canada and someone broke into our van and stole all of our gear. Nearly $7000 worth of boards, boots, bindings, cameras, computers, packs, clothes, and other things. Anyways, my pack was stolen along with the other stuff and I’m still yet […]

Location: Winter Park, CO Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to softpacked to icy groomers. Setup: I rode the K2 Fastplant with K2 Auto Agogo LTD bindings and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 151cm. First Impression: The upgrade to the 11-12 fastplant just adds to the fun of the board! Weight: Lighter than average Flex: Stiffer flex between the bindings with the ollie bar and flat profile but with the rocker it had a softer nose and tail so you had playfulness but also stability between the feet. The bambooyah made for a solid flex without any surprises when riding and it was an easy board to adjust to. The Fastplant has jib rocker so the board is 80% flat and 20% rocker just enough on the tip and tail to keep the contact points off the snow until engaged. Turning: The fastplant features the hyper progressive sidecut that makes it a easy to ride and very predictable board on edge. It can handle rallying into a carve or taking it for a more mellow ride. Both long and short radius turns on the fastplant felt smooth and comfortable. Stable: The ollie bar between the bindings stiffened up the fastplant which helped make […]

During the off-days at camp most of the camp is quiet as staff and campers are non-existent but the Windells Academy students stay busy with on-snow and off-snow activities. On Friday the van was loaded up with Academy kids to head to Seattle where K2 Sports is located and were given a tour of the entire operation behind K2. I was able to tag along on the adventure to see more in depth into the Academy and what experiences they have as students. Huge thanks to Mike Powell at K2 for giving the tour. Arriving at K2 Snowboards! [singlepic id=9428 w=400 h=300 float=] One of the best things about visiting K2 is the history behind the company which is present all around the offices from the time you enter the building. They have so much history in skiing/snowboarding that you can walk around just staring at the old photographs & ads forever. [singlepic id=9430 w=400 h=300 float=] Windells Academy student Nick trying out the K2 motorcycle [singlepic id=9437 w=400 h=267 float=] We headed into the warehouse portion of the K2 offices where everything is stored and it’s massive. K2 is a huge company with a variety of companies underneath them […]
