Location: Mt. Baker, WA and Thompson Pass, Alaska Snow Conditions: Mixture of heavier fresh snow to lighter snow. Setup: I rode the K2 Panoramic with Spark R&D Burner bindings and Vans size 8 women’s boots. Size: 158cm. First Impression: I got this board blindly and it more than did the job for a splitboard setup. Good all-around mountain splitboard. Weight: Average Ease of Use: The Panoramic was easier to set up since I had already set up a Venture splitboard the season before. I had all the things needed (board, voile system, sparks bindings) so it just meant sitting down and setting it up to my stance. The K2 climbing skins that came with the setup weren’t bad but definitely had some days where snow was able to get into the skins and had to be cleared to continue skinning up. Flex: The K2 Panoramic was definitely more forgiving than expected. The all-terrain rocker combo with bambooyah made it a good medium range for flex on the mountain. Longitudinally it had the bambooyah feel to it that was lively and poppy on the board but torsionally it had a softer more forgiving feel. I really liked that when I rode […]

Location: Mission Ridge, WA Snow Conditions: Softpacked groomers to fresh snow on the mountain. Setup: I rode the K2 Formula Bindings on the Lib Tech Attack Banana with my Vans Ferra Boots size 8. Time to set up the binding: These were pretty quick to set up and get going. I was able to step into them and only make adjustments to the straps to fine tune them. Fit: I rocked the Formula’s in the medium sizing which worked for my size 8 women’s boots. The boot felt good with the sizing and once the straps were adjusted, they were a good fit. First Impression: I can see why the Formula’s are such a popular binding from K2. Consistent, comfortable and all-around handling. Appearance: I tried the K2 Formula bindings in the red colorway which have a red baseplate with some designs on them and black straps. Pretty simple in the design and color choices. Comfort: The Formula’s definitely have comfort under lock. The straps are really padded and mold well to the boot. The canted footbed helps align the body to make for a more comfortable ride. Functionality: The K2 Formula bindings are designed to be a clean traditional […]

Location: Winter Park, CO Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to softpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the K2 Agogo bindings on the K2 Highlite with my Vans Ferra Boots size 8. Time to set up the binding: Pretty normal time to set up the bindings. It was more about making sure the adjustments for the auto strap fit so took a couple minutes to get it dialed and tested. Fit: I tried the Agogo bindings in the medium size which have fit my boots fine in the past and for this pair. The toe strap was secure around the toebox on my boot and the width of the binding worked with my boot just fine. First Impression: Continues to be the Agogo with Auto, all mountain riding and good comfort. Appearance: The Agogo comes in black for 2013 with a subtle addition of blue and silver colors implemented in the binding. The black also features jagged patchwork that blends in really well with the binding. It’s good looking in the black and I like the overall look of it. Comfort: Good comfort overall on the Agogo. This binding has padding in the baseplate to cushion and absorb bumpy terrain while the straps keep […]

Location: Winter Park, CO Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to softpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the K2 Highlite with K2 Auto Agogo bindings and Vans Ferra boots size 8. Size: 152cm First Impression: Light but aggressive and built for charging. Weight: Lighter than average. Flex: Stiffer flex underneath the bindings, torsionally has some forgiveness to the board and longitudinally some snap and aggressive riding. The nose was a tad softer so you could keep the nose up and stay back on the board for powder days. Overall on the stiffer end, it’s meant for freeriding and all mountain cruising. The Highlite has K2?s all mountain rocker which is 70% flat and 30% rocker. Basically flat between the bindings to almost the last insert, then rocker from there to the contact points. It also features tweekend, a new concept that gives you more surface area to press, float and land on. Turning: Reminded me of the Eco Pop in the carving and handling, quick and initiating turns very easily on the mountain. Once into a turn, it really gripped the snow and held a carve throughout the whole progression of the turn. I really liked the longer drawn out turns but it was […]

Intended Purpose: The Pilchuck backpack keeps it short and sweet and is designed for short hikes or sidecountry adventures. It is ready for backcountry and comes with a aluminum probe and rescue shovel. All you need is your beacon. Size: The Pilchuck kit is 11L, definitely a smaller backpack for only the essentials. When I took the backpack splitboarding, I could fit in a shovel, probe, beacon, water, skins, light foldable jacket and have my ski poles attached to the outside of the pack. It isn’t much but it keeps it light for those short hikes. Appearance: I received the Pilchuk kit in the black colorway, which I believe is the only option it comes in. It’s pretty simple in design but with all the necessities you want. Ease of Travel: You would only take this pack on quick hiking trips, in the summer or winter. It’s so lightweight and compact that it’s really easy to travel with but you can’t pack too much. Features: The Pilchuck Backpack may be small but comes with a bunch of features for the backcountry rider. The pack comes with the K2 rescue shovel, a multi-purpose shovel that operates as normal and as in […]

First Impression: The Eco Pop is an aggressive pipe board and it’s quick. Weight: Lighter than average Flex: Stiffer flex longitudinally from nose to tail that helped give it stability on the groomers but a tad softer torsional flex so you could engage the board for quick responsive turns. The stiffer flex made it not as playful but very aggressive for freeriding and carving. The Eco Pop features K2’s all mountain rocker which is 70% flat and 30% rocker. Basically flat between the bindings to almost the last insert, then rocker from there to the contact points. Turning: The Eco Pop was quick to engage into turns and that’s where I thought it was most aggressive was how it handled carves especially the initiation part. The hyper progressive sidecut has been a favorite because it locks you into each turn and is really quick to engage into each carve. I found this time around with the Eco Pop it held the short radius turns the best and the longer drawn out […]

Setup: I rode the K2 Fastplant with K2 Auto Agogo LTD bindings and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 151cm. First Impression: The upgrade to the 11-12 fastplant just adds to the fun of the board! Weight: Lighter than average Flex: Stiffer flex between the bindings with the ollie bar and flat profile but with the rocker it had a softer nose and tail so you had playfulness but also stability between the feet. The bambooyah made for a solid flex without any surprises when riding and it was an easy board to adjust to. The Fastplant has jib rocker so the board is 80% flat and 20% rocker just enough on the tip and tail to keep the contact points off the snow until engaged. Turning: The fastplant features the hyper progressive sidecut that makes it a easy to ride and very predictable board on edge. It can handle rallying into a carve or taking it for a more mellow ride. Both long and short radius turns on the fastplant felt smooth and comfortable. Stable: The ollie bar between the bindings stiffened up the fastplant which helped make […]
