Last weekend I had the opportunity to spend the morning in the park taking photos of a rider practicing a trick for the upcoming X-Games. The rider was Torstein Horgmo and the trick was the Switch Backside Triple Cork. It was an early morning in the park to meet up with everyone. The Shredbots would be making an edit in addition to our Keystone filmer capturing footage that we could use after it was released. It was the perfect day and although the Main Street jump line was closed for sled access, anyone riding A51 chairlift could watch Torstein practice an array of tricks. I sat on the side of the jump to get shots that we could use for Keystone and just enjoyed what I was watching. And here’s the edit of Torstein landing the switch backside triple cork for the first time.

I’m not one to turn down a ride break especially when friends walk into my office geared up and ask. It was an easy decision to make a couple laps with Jess and Phil today. The mountain was a bit busier than yesterday but still fun to make laps and not crowded. We ended up taking Ranger lift for a couple mini park laps. After a couple park laps we convinced Jess to hit the first box (and she did!). Then it was onto riding the rest of the mountain, lapping Schoolmarm to Peru. By then the clouds were taking shape, I caught this slash photo of Phil with the crazy clouds overhead.

The Burton Super Clinic continued on the slopes Friday for a day of discussions. I ended up spending the morning with Scott Anfang’s group discussing Riglet Park and then Chris Hargrave’s group for the freestyle features segment. For the second portion, I headed up to the beginner progression area with Kevin our Park Manager to get some shots and check it out before the group arrived. After lunch, I headed back into work to finish up the week with some much-needed time at the office. Definitely good to get out on the slopes with the Burton clinic and get a better understanding of how resorts can make the learning experience easier and better.

Usually I would have spent my Thursday in the office with maybe a lap or two on the mountain but this week was the Burton Super Clinic so I spent Thursday morning in discussions and the afternoon on the snow. It was good to see familiar faces like Rasmus from Chuckbuddies, Hargrave from Woodward and Scott and Nelson from Steamboat. The afternoon was perfect for laps and discussing the Burton programs. We headed up for laps down Spring Dipper and River Run.

While Loveland and A-Basin raced to open and started turning lifts in October, I’ve been busy preparing and waiting for the Opening of Keystone in Colorado. Yesterday we got to sample the goods before the public did which was a great start to the season and today I was on the mountain working to capture the Opening Day experience through social media. Thanks to a coffee on the way to work, I was wide awake at 6am and ready to start the season. By 7:30 when the crowd started growing, it was time to head outside. We had compiled a couple swag giveaways including a GoPro prize to hang out to the early birds in line. The morning crowd was great, really stoked and it was fun taking pics of everyone and throwing out goodies. We had a ceremony to welcome the Bergman family and honored them with their own Bergman gondola (#2 on the line). Last year was the Dercum gondola and this year was the Bergman’s. Both of them are a huge part of Keystone’s history. After many people got their first turns, it was time to head up and get in my lap for the day. I […]

It feels great to be back in Colorado. It’s well worth the drive from California for a ton of events going on, seeing friends and better conditions. Today we headed to Keystone to get in some early morning laps before the Grand Prix at Copper in the afternoon. The snow conditions had good coverage, parks were filled with skiers and riders jam packed to hit every feature possible and the mountain was busy but you still had space to yourself each run. I’ve been pretty stoked on Epicmix this year so we made sure to get shots on the mountain. Here’s Dan and myself at the top! Keystone has A51 park and a stellar crew to keep the park in great shape despite the train of skiers/riders hitting them all day. There were a ton of features in the parks today and multiple jump lines for any level. The big jump line at Keystone has three huge hits and a constant stream of skiers and riders hitting them. Love watching from the lift. I opted for the easier side of the park, playing on the flat boxes and a buried metal tube before cruising the groomers down to Peru lift.
