Last weekend I had the opportunity to spend the morning in the park taking photos of a rider practicing a trick for the upcoming X-Games. The rider was Torstein Horgmo and the trick was the Switch Backside Triple Cork. It was an early morning in the park to meet up with everyone. The Shredbots would be making an edit in addition to our Keystone filmer capturing footage that we could use after it was released. It was the perfect day and although the Main Street jump line was closed for sled access, anyone riding A51 chairlift could watch Torstein practice an array of tricks. I sat on the side of the jump to get shots that we could use for Keystone and just enjoyed what I was watching. And here’s the edit of Torstein landing the switch backside triple cork for the first time.

One of the best perks of my job is being able to really get out and explore the mountain. I wake up early, I get first turns on corduroy days, on powder days and on my favorite bluebird days. It helps when knowing what the mountain is actually like on any given day and to help collect photos that I can use on social media. This morning was the perfect opportunity to ride the bowls and access the hikeable terrain at Keystone (something I had yet to do). I met up with our snow reporter, talked with ski patrol and headed up the hike out North Bowl to get in my earned turns for the day. During the hike, I listened to the Head and the Heart and remembered what it was like to hike at 11k elevation up an easy slope. The first run was with patrol and the upper portion had the best powder turns before riding into the choppier/bumped out lower section and run out. On our second run, we caught the outback shuttle snowcat for a ride to the top ($5 good deal) and skipped the second hike. This time we dropped in with a traverse […]

Finally the snow came back to Colorado! I left work on Saturday when it was puking snow and knew that we’d be having a powder day on Sunday which meant early to bed, early to rise! I was in the office at 6am to get snow photos and on the gondola by 7:30 to head up top for more snow photos. The top photo is the calm before the storm. Usually I take photos of other skiers and riders but I ended up becoming the snowboard model and got to make a couple powder turns of my own down Jackwacker (the only ungroomed run that morning). It was good, definitely good to be back floating on snow again. Lately I’ve been back on my Never Summer Lotus (which will be reviewed soon). It’s generally my board of choice for most mountain riding so it’s been good to test it back out on some new snow and a mix of groomers to easier park features. I like to call myself the unisex snowboard model. I noticed it back in Mammoth but in pictures of me you can’t really tell if I’m a girl or a guy. Either way I like to […]

I’m not one to turn down a ride break especially when friends walk into my office geared up and ask. It was an easy decision to make a couple laps with Jess and Phil today. The mountain was a bit busier than yesterday but still fun to make laps and not crowded. We ended up taking Ranger lift for a couple mini park laps. After a couple park laps we convinced Jess to hit the first box (and she did!). Then it was onto riding the rest of the mountain, lapping Schoolmarm to Peru. By then the clouds were taking shape, I caught this slash photo of Phil with the crazy clouds overhead.

Since we’ve opened I’ve gotten into a routine with my days off. Typically I spend Sundays running errands, at home, relaxing while I let the weekend crowds enjoy the slopes but come Monday I’m geared up, working or riding on the mountain. It works for my job and still allows me to have a good amount of ride time. Monday morning the storm cleared and didn’t really deliver much but the mountain was quiet and the runs were good. I worked in the morning and met up with Nick and Laura to take a couple hours of ride time for the day. We ended up lapping Schoolmarm over and over, checking out park and then heading in for meetings in the afternoon.

Can’t believe it’s the last day of November but it’s here and December is coming quickly. After a full day of work, I headed back out onto the mountain to meet up with Chris for some evening night laps. The fact that I can leave work from a long day and still make laps in the night cold frosty air…is perfection. Night riding is calming, it’s so quiet, so dark and so much fun. Plus there’s less people on the slopes and you can generally make quick laps over and over. We ended up lapping till the mountain closed at 8pm. It was definitely a much-needed ride night and a good way to enjoy the colder air on the mountain.

Until the snow comes, it means laps in the sunshine on the groomers. It’s still good that the mountain is open, there’s snow and snowboarding still makes me happy. Today was my day off, perfect for getting back into the easy park for a couple laps in between the big park and groomers. Thanks to the skier for getting shots of me. Right now the easy park is on Scout Trail with two flat boxes and a down box. All ride-on (they weren’t in the early season park) so a lot easier than before. Since it was a Monday, the easy park was practically empty and you could lap over and over and over without a line.

Wednesday was a big day for the mountain. Tubing opened, the Ice Rink opened and A51 opened. It was the perfect day for heading up early to capture the new park design on the mountain. Whenever I head up early, it’s generally a lap or two for the day while getting photos I can use for social media. [singlepic id=14700 w=500 h=500 float=] The big perk of early mornings is the corduroy right now. It’s definitely tun to get those first turns in of the day on the best conditions. I rode with my camera so I pointed it behind me and captured this shot of my carves in the snow. [singlepic id=14701 w=500 h=500 float=] The rest of the morning was spent in A51 getting opening shots for the Facebook gallery before heading back into work. Considering it hasn’t snowed in a while, I’m fine with the sunshine and groomers until it does.

With Keystone night riding starting on Wednesday, it was the perfect opportunity for Keystone to give employees a Thanksgiving dinner and pre-night shred only for Keystone employees. Definitely one of the perks of the job is enjoying an almost empty mountain to yourself on those rare occasions. It’s been a while since I’ve ridden nights but I absolutely love night riding. [singlepic id=14699 w=500 h=500 float=] For the first time this season, I listened to tunes while riding since I knew that runs would be quick and fun. I ended up lapping with BJ and we both hauled down the mountain each run before calling it a night and heading home. Definitely looking forward to more night laps this season when work ends. Sorry for the lack of pics but it was a quick night on the mountain and I was enjoying lapping without capturing the moment too well.

Typically on a Saturday I’m spending the day inside working and leaving the runs to our guests but today was a nice lunch break to head out for a couple laps with Phil. I work right near the gondola so laps are easy and fun during the day. Today I was trying out the Never Summer Pandora with my Burton Escapade bindings. It’s fun to be on the women’s equivalent of the evo since I’ve spent so much time on the evo and not yet the Pandora. I’m really happy with the escapades, definitely more response than I’m used to but in a good way. It was a beautiful day to be outdoors, much warmer than expected and conditions were mostly soft in spots. We lapped each of the runs, from park to Schoolmarm to Spring Dipper down to River Run.
