There are two types of weather days in Steamboat: Dumping powder or bluebird skies. We rarely get overcast and we even more rarely get rain. For some reason today on the slopes was overcast but not snowing on the lower mountain and the snow conditions were dust on crust so not the most fun. I headed out with my co-worker Rochelle to get in some park laps with her during our ride break and we had decent visibility so we just lapped mini park most of the lunch break. [singlepic id=8207 w=400 h=300 float=] Rochelle was trying out the Sierra V-spot snowboard and stoked on the softer playful flex for the park. [singlepic id=8206 w=400 h=300 float=] She’s still getting comfortable with the boxes and I worked on trying to get noseslides and boardslides down…sometimes good and sometimes bad [singlepic id=8205 w=300 h=400 float=] That was it for our ride break, just lapped park and talked on the chairlift. Definitely good to get out and clear your head during the day.

It was another warm sunny slushy day on the mountain so I took my morning to run errands in town before heading up to the slopes. The park was calling my name and even though I was riding alone, I wanted to step up my riding today. I was lucky to catch up with Sonny for some laps in the afternoon and he helped cheer me on through my park lap improvement progression session. [singlepic id=8139 w=400 h=300 float=] I’m still working on my tricks in the beginner park but it’s difficult because the boxes are short so once you are on…two seconds later…you are off the box. But it helps with confidence and I’m getting a lot more comfortable in the park. Testing the Spy Bias goggles today, perfect lens for bluebird [singlepic id=8137 w=400 h=300 float=] Today I spent more runs lapping our medium park (Rabbit Ears Terrain Park) which has a rail line that is flat box, flat down box, rainbow box, up rail, down rail and log features at the end. My goal was to ride more features in this park. Here’s some of the features I was hitting (but the pics are older).
It’s hard to imagine that winter is almost over, March has arrived which is my favorite month of winter but also means there are less days on the slopes soon. I’ve had an amazing winter so far and today everything felt good, cranked the music, lapped the mountain in the early morning and then was able to lap park with Claire. Snowboarding is addicting, cause I was wanting more this afternoon. This morning I was able to ride from 9-11 to do the Steamboat straight talk, it’s basically the conditions of the day blog post for the mountain and a lot of fun plus it gets me out on the slopes. The sun was out, temps were warmer and I was testing out the new Chemical Storm snowboard. [singlepic id=8087 w=300 h=400 float=] The fun part about testing or even reviewing is just being able to get used to a board, ride it and see how it handles in as much different conditions as I possibly can. Today’s conditions were corduroy groomers, bumpy choppy snow, leftover pow, park and pipe. After a typical run, it’s time to see how it handles easy turns, harder aggressive turns, quick stops, short and […]

I’ve been enjoying sundays this year since it’s generally my one day to sleep in before getting up on the slopes. Today was another late start to the mountain but I made it just in time for the afternoon to enjoy the extended spring hours for the chairlifts. Now I can ride till 4:30pm each day instead of 4pm. [singlepic id=8020 w=400 h=300 float=] When I headed out onto the snow it was a little overcast and warm on the mountain so I didn’t layer it up and dressed for a warm park day. That meant that it would soon snow which it did after an hour into riding, the flakes started falling at times throughout the afternoon. I was in the zone, trying my hardest to get boardslides on the boxes so I kept riding through the new snow but since I was riding alone I wasn’t really pushing myself. [singlepic id=8021 w=300 h=400 float=] By the time I left the mountain, the snow was continuing to fall and one of my favorite things is watching the snowflakes come down so lets hope for more!
Since I arrived back in Steamboat the sun has been shining everyday and just calling my name to get out on the mountain. Today we had really cold temperatures, negative degrees in the early morning and by the time I went out at noon it was still rather cold on the mountain which meant bundling up. [singlepic id=7942 w=300 h=400 float=] I ended up meeting up with Jenny Brown to get in some laps through the mini park together. Jenny works at PowderTools snowboard shop in town and it was the first time we could ride together since I’ve known her. [singlepic id=7943 w=400 h=300 float=] I was rocking the high 5 mittens that pow gloves gave me while in Seattle. Perfect day for the warmth of the mittens and still could throw high 5’s on the mountain.
This week was definitely working for the weekend and when the weekend arrived, it was much-needed time to shred! With Mike in town we were finally able to take laps together and since he spent the last two days freeriding the mountain, we opted for a park day today. Say hi to Mike…he’s the behind the scenes help [singlepic id=7447 w=400 h=300 float=] We ended up lapping Maverick’s pipe or Rabbit Ears Park and then hitting up the Lil’ Rodeo smaller park on the way down to Christie chairlift. With the mountain busy because of MLK weekend, lapping park wasn’t that busy and a perfect day to work on the park/pipe skills. [singlepic id=7448 w=400 h=300 float=] I had some good runs and bad runs today, ended up slamming off the tire bonk but it was fun trying and definitely my first hard slam this season…of course it was to my stomach not my head. I worked on my switch riding outside of the park and especially riding switch on cat tracks. But pipe felt better when I slowed down and really concentrated on my heelside wall and Lil’ Rodeo is always fun for riding through.
It’s the calm before the storm in Steamboat, the final last breath before the tourists arrive on their vacations. As much as I appreciate tourists (because of them I have a job and live where I live) I appreciate the quietness before it gets crazy. Today was that day, quiet on the mountain and mellow park laps to enjoy it. I made runs with Chris from snowboarderguide and Bec who runs our Ski School. We made our way to the newly done Rabbit Ears Terrain Park, it’s our medium size park on the mountain and this year is the best I’ve seen it. Rails on the right side, jump line on the left. Bonk features at the bottom. [singlepic id=7090 w=400 h=300 float=] I can now hit two of the features in the park. The first flat box that Chris is riding here and a bonk log at the bottom.
After a couple morning errands in Steamboat I picked up Amy and Tessa on the way to the mountain for a day of snowboarding. We took the gondola up and met Philip at the top for a couple laps on BC chairlift and what terrain was open. The conditions have been no new snow and machine made snow for the past week, definitely getting some icy runs with the cold temperatures we’ve been having. Amy cruising down Heavenly Daze [singlepic id=6994 w=400 h=300 float=] I’m content right now just working on my park riding and so I took Amy into the park to get her on some of the boxes for practice. She learned the hard way about using your edges on the box but overall she did a great job on getting on the boxes. [singlepic id=6992 w=400 h=300 float=] I kept lapping the terrain park while Philip went to work and Amy went to get more turns in, so after I ran into Tamra and Andy to continue the afternoon park session. It was a busy day in the park and empty on the mountain but that also meant some close calls as well.
Despite the really cold temperatures that have been hitting Colorado, I set out today on my ride break to warm up my body with park laps. Nothing has really changed on the mountain, no new snow and no new features but that doesn’t bother me since I’m still working on getting comfortable in the park. Like anything in snowboarding, I know that doing it over and over will make sure it comes naturally to me at sometime in the future. [singlepic id=6989 w=400 h=300 float=] I made a couple calls but no one was up riding so I figured I would lap park till I ran into someone. I came prepared with music just in case I needed to zone out. [singlepic id=6985 w=400 h=300 float=] It only took a run till I met up with Sonny & Molly with a couple of their friends. It’s been awesome being able to run into people and just lap the terrain park during ride breaks. It personally means I can get a good amount of runs in with the park and Christie Peak Express chairlift right next to it. As soon as we hit up Christie Peak Express, we ran into Jerry who helped give key advice and was great to have around during my “trying to teach basics of park to a skier” lesson. Loryn and Jerry [singlepic id=6974 w=400 h=300 float=] The first steps were to scope the park and have her ski through while I hit the features. She was able to get a idea of what they looked like and the size while watching me on my snowboard. Our second lap she then skied straight over (I guess it’s 50/50 on skis too?!?) and eventually each lap she was riding the features easier and easier.
