It’s the second day of the Burton demo tour, so today meant an early start to make the most of the mountain with the early groomed conditions. The crowds have died down from the holidays so most of the day wasn’t too busy in the Chair 6 lift line. My camera battery died early in the day so most of the photos were taken on my iphone. The demo tent kept busy most of the day and each time there was a line to be able to get the next board/binding to try out. I ended up riding the Burton Nug with Scribe bindings, Burton Whammy Bar with Prophet bindings and Burton Lipstick with Stilletto bindings.

It’s a good time of year when the Burton demo tour rolls into town. It means getting on the snow to try out a bunch of gear in three days. Today was busy in the tents as the masses came up to try out the 2012 gear and get a feel for what Burton offers. It was an interesting day to demo on the icy, hardpacked snow and get a good feel for the board handling. While in line for demos, I heard from the girl working the tent that Burton wouldn’t blame the riders for impact from the bad conditions, so that’s a plus. I ended up trying out three setups for the day: Burton Feelgood Flying V with Diode bindings, Burton Aftermath with Malavita Restricted EST bindings and the Burton Fortress with Burton Escapade bindings. Halfway through the day I ran into my old co-worker Delaney to take a couple laps together and got a couple shots of him riding in the parks. A bunch of features are missing from the easier Forest Trail park so you only have a jump line and a couple boxes to play on. Looking forward to demoing more boards this weekend and […]

Most of the holiday crowds have taken off so the mountain is almost back to normal for January. We headed up a little early in the morning to get the most of the conditions. It was the first time in a week that I was finally able to check out how the mountain conditions are holding up and the lack of snow is starting to show. You could see dirt in spots and there were a lot more rocks on the mountain. The jumps were gone from South Park so we headed over to Main to see what was up and stayed there most of the day. I got my laps in Forest Trail park which is setup really fun right now with smaller jumps and features.

When you work for a ski resort, you get used to working holidays and never enjoying the day off. This year, I was expecting to spend Thanksgiving with family so I asked for the time off but I ended up staying in Mammoth instead for my days off. I wasn’t sure about riding on Thanksgiving since it’d be busier but my friend Dan convinced me to hit up the mountain with him in the morning. Thanksgiving marked the start of the busyness on the mountain for snowboarding. But even though there were more people, lines weren’t too bad. We ended up sticking to Forest Trail and Main Park laps so we could kind of escape the busy runs. The best part about a 22′ pipe, is the fact that less people ride pipe and feel comfortable going through it so we pretty much had it to ourselves every lap through. Here’s a video of Dan’s pipe run.

Last year I believe it was almost January before the pipe was completed. This year it’s November and the Mammoth 22′ pipe opened today, a whole month before last season. It helped make the mountain look a little bit more like winter but we still need more snow to make for a total winter experience. I headed out on my ride break so I could lap the mountain, freeride and get in some pipe runs with Pat Stahl and his friends for some fun laps on the mountain. We lapped through park, which has a bunch of features and hopefully more park opening this week. I cannot wait for Forest Trail to open, it’s my favorite on the mountain.

It’s been an interesting April week for weather in Mammoth. Started out sunny and warm, turned into full blown winter and windy then back to sunny and windy. I’ve been anxious to spend more time on the Endeavor color so hit the slopes for a lunch break and shred sesh over by Canyon Lodge today. This year at Mammoth has been amazing for snowfall. Record breaking snowfall and tons of snow, about 52 feet of snowfall total and the base depth is 14-24 feet depending where you are on the mountain. Insane! I took this picture today laughing at the snow now equal with the lodge and the steps you used to walk up to, are gone. [singlepic id=11350 w=300 h=533 float=] Art Park and Canyon Lodge areas were fun. Hard to believe next week this part of the mountain will close so trying to ride it as much as possible.
After the weekend trip to Seattle I was ready to get back on snow for some lunchtime shred sessions. The conditions are good, the sun’s been out and there’s no reason not to take a couple laps through Forest Trail at lunchtime. I hit up the mountain with Dan who was out trying his snowboard skills (usually he skis). It was also a good day to test out the 2012 Endeavor Color Series for a couple laps and adjust to the board before I start really riding it all over the mountain. I will say, this board engages into turns quick! [singlepic id=11347 w=500 h=281 float=] There’s a noticeable new jump feature in Main Park this week, a huge step over! I only got part of the jump but it’s pretty rad to watch the pros throwing down on it. [singlepic id=11348 w=500 h=281 float=] Looking forward to the rest of the week and hopefully good sunny conditions on the mountain!

Another sunny day on the mountain without the winds howling, conditions were soft and parks were good for lapping on my lunch break. I headed out with the skier to get some shots of him in Main Park on the rails and pipe, and get some laps on Forest Trail so I could hit the jump line. Today I mounted up the NS SL for some laps, that reviews coming up and just wanted to ride it again before I start typing up the review.
The storm took off and the sun came back out in Mammoth for a tuesday shred session. I headed out for a couple lunch laps with the skier to enjoy the soft snow and sunshine on the mountain. It’s hard to stay inside all day when the mountain is just outside the doors and it feels so good to lap the nearby lifts quickly. The skier and myself [singlepic id=11004 w=500 h=281 float=] We made a couple laps in South Park hitting the 18 foot pipe and the jib park (which is a bit above my level). I always take out the photo for capturing the skier since he hits the bigger rail lines than I do. A couple laps in Main Park were perfection with the park set up the same from Grand Prix slopestyle. They haven’t changed a thing and that means everyone can ride the course that was in Grand Prix.
This year has been interesting for my riding, I’m jumping everyday now! I never really wanted to but I’m feeling more comfortable and just having fun with it. I probably won’t ever hit big jumps again but right now I’m enjoying the small jumps in the Forest Trail and Wonderland Parks. Today I hit more jumps than the day before but I was also riding for Danny today so maybe that’s why I felt the need for more air time. My thoughts are with Danny and his recovery! [singlepic id=10533 w=500 h=281 float=] Today was a great day to get out for riding because it meant trying the new Never Summer Proto CT board coming out for 2012. This all-mountain true twin will come in a regular and wide version for 2012 and is a blend of the SL/Evo. [singlepic id=10532 w=300 h=533 float=] Adina and myself on the lift [singlepic id=10534 w=500 h=281 float=] Today was quick laps through Forest Trail Park since I didn’t have much time to ride. Definitely excited for SIA coming up next week and the crazy schedule that comes with it.
