Yesterday the mountain received a fresh dusting of white and kept up cold temperatures for most of the day. Today I woke up to a blanket of white and headed outside to walk the dog in a snowy wonderland. It’s pretty amazing to think that less than 3 months ago we were open for riding and now we’re getting back into winter-mode. It was also a wake-up call to figure out where I packed my winter jackets and a realization I need to buy new snow boots for this winter. Here’s some shots from this morning, playing in the snow with my dog! [singlepic id=12444 w=300 h=533 float=] The snow in town was pretty wet heavy slush this morning. It’ll be interesting to see how the snow changes when I head up to the base of Main Lodge today. [singlepic id=12445 w=500 h=281 float=] Evening Update! Throughout the day, it kept snowing at Main Lodge and kept stacking up. The total amount when I left work was 15 inches, crazy huh! The mountain isn’t 100% white but this cold spell definitely allowed for some coverage in spots and turned the mountain from brown to white pretty quickly. Looking up at […]

Imagine pre-1995 clubs, old school outfits and lots of adult beverages mixed in with nine holes of golf at Sierra Star Golf Course in Mammoth Lakes, CA. That was the 2nd Annual Shit Club Golf Tournament today – designed to play with shitty clubs. Mammoth Snowboard Team coach Ben Wisner and Mammoth Sponsorship Manager Robb Hewett started the golf tournament last year and kept the tournament word of mouth for the second year with a lot of local Mammoth employees, friends and industry folk. For many of skiers and snowboarders, the game of golf is a good way to pass by the summer. For me it’s been a neglected sport but one I’ve enjoyed since I was a kid. Despite this being a snowboard blog, I like to post the occasional fun activity that’s not snowboarding specific. [singlepic id=12399 w=300 h=533 float=] There were many rules in place, if you cheated – you ran naked. If you had clubs newer than 1995 – you couldn’t use them. Old school outfits were appreciated. We met up at Sierra Star at 10am for the registration, plopped down the $50 for the 9 holes of round with golf cart, lunch and beers.
When Mammoth closed on July 4, I wasn’t sure if It’d snowboard again this summer but today the opportunity arose when my friend Daniel talked me into a shred sesh. We headed up to a snow patch we heard about and found that we could have a blast creating our own features. I definitely miss the summer at Hood but it was rad to get our kicks locally. We made our way to the Lakes Basin, just above Mammoth Lakes and got quite a few questions on the hike up with our snowboard gear. We didn’t have much snow to work with or much of a hill but with a few logs, snowboards and shoveling snow into place we had a very small jib park.

The recent snowfall in Mammoth Lakes, California offered up nearby die-hard snowboarders a chance for jib sessions on the rails set up near Mammoth resort or the use of logs/down trees in the wilderness. I had a crew of friends from Tahoe make their way down last week to get in a snow session and get to test out the banshee bungee for the first time. One of the best perks about the banshee bungee is you don’t need to built a drop in, you can use a flat environment and tie it to something nearby the feature you want to hit. Riders Claire and Chris were on hand to experience it with photographer Geno capturing the fun last week. The bungee makes it so any rider can attach it to an object near the feature they want to hit and get enough momentum to hit the object using the elastic cord to give them enough speed to hit the feature. Any rider looking to film on urban features or in the wilderness can find the bunshee a benefit to them without having to haul or build a drop in ramp to session. Setting up the bungee on a […]

Earlier this week I watched as friends from Tahoe came down to enjoy the recent snowfall with a jib sesh and came back totally stoked on the snow. I didn’t make it out with them but realized today I should head to the snow before it melts. You can call today Shay’s-unsuccessful-jib-sesh. I put out some calls but in the end, it was myself with my dog to check it out and make an afternoon of it. During our morning hike we saw a corrogated tube right next to the snow which I thought would be a great way to start the jib sesh by setting it up and having a go at it. I ended up eating shit every single time I hit it…definitely the best falls to start off the season. I should have known to just find a log that would be easier to ride off of and not have to ollie onto…but I figured I’d try. It hurt but I had fun doing it. The good news was no one was around to watch and I did not take video of it, haha!
A couple days ago it was like summer and I was starting to wonder when if the switch to winter would ever happen. I know October is early but Mammoth opened in October last year so there’s definite possibilities for early snowfall here. Luckily my wish came true and delivered a couple inches of new snow on the mountains today. I saw the flakes begin last night and throughout today delivering some white happy snowflakes that I have come to love so much. [singlepic id=10058 w=500 h=281 float=] My favorite place to go with my dog is Horseshoe Lake so we headed there after work for some play time in the snow (if you click on the image it’ll go bigger!) [singlepic id=10059 w=3000 h=453 float=] I personally love any type of tree with snowfall on it especially when the sun is trying to shine through the trees [singlepic id=10060 w=400 h=601 float=] We did a hike in the snow to McLoud Lake where my dog Capita decided that as a true snowdog that meant playing in the water as well as the snow! I tried to stop her but she was too happy to play in both.
