One thing missing in California that’s different from Colorado is the absence of Gaper Day. It just doesn’t exist here. April 1st was like any other day on the mountain as far as I could tell. I headed out for the daily shred break to make laps with the skier and since both of us lived in Colorado, it was kind of weird not seeing the usual crazyness that happens on Gaper Day. Do I miss it? Nah…snowboarding is fun without it.
Almost 6 months ago, I arrived in Mammoth Lakes to work for the mountain. Its been a really great learning experience and most of all, I learn from the people I work with everyday. Today a couple of us from marketing like Dan, myself, Katy and Steve headed out onto the slopes with Bill Byrne from BBPR who was in town. Bill does great blog writeups on malakye.com about action sports PR. There’s no doubt that the mountain is riding nicely, it was sunny with some winds but overall beautiful day and soft snow on the groomers. We headed over to Art Park, Canyon mini park and boardercross for some turns. I got to try out the new NXT tube with abstract art on it. Pretty rad design and good to stay covered up for the sunny days now. Dan, Katy and myself on the lift [singlepic id=11040 w=500 h=281 float=] Bill Byrne in the mini pipe [singlepic id=11042 w=500 h=281 float=] Steve is the creative director at Mammoth but also does board testing for Outside Magazine, he was out riding the 2012 Ride Highlife and testing it out. [singlepic id=11043 w=500 h=281 float=] Definitely a great way to end […]

Over the weekend a storm rolled into Mammoth and delivered up a couple more inches of snow on the mountain. The total is now 453 inches (almost 38 feet of snow) and it’s good on the mountain. So good that I’m happy snowboarding will continue into the spring. Ashley and I hit up the mountain with the gopro on a pole and flipcam in my pocket plus my camera for some good turns. We headed over to chair #22 to see what the avy chutes were like first and then made our way farther over. With the storm still in effect, it meant the upper mountain was closed so lower mountain only. Even at noon there was powder on the mountain [singlepic id=10997 w=500 h=334 float=] Avy Chutes [singlepic id=10998 w=500 h=334 float=] Traversing over to get powder turns under chair #9 which wasn’t running today [singlepic id=10999 w=500 h=334 float=] Next couple days are sunny so top of the mountain should open up. Happy for all the snow!
