It’s the second day of the Burton demo tour, so today meant an early start to make the most of the mountain with the early groomed conditions. The crowds have died down from the holidays so most of the day wasn’t too busy in the Chair 6 lift line. My camera battery died early in the day so most of the photos were taken on my iphone. The demo tent kept busy most of the day and each time there was a line to be able to get the next board/binding to try out. I ended up riding the Burton Nug with Scribe bindings, Burton Whammy Bar with Prophet bindings and Burton Lipstick with Stilletto bindings.

It’s a good time of year when the Burton demo tour rolls into town. It means getting on the snow to try out a bunch of gear in three days. Today was busy in the tents as the masses came up to try out the 2012 gear and get a feel for what Burton offers. It was an interesting day to demo on the icy, hardpacked snow and get a good feel for the board handling. While in line for demos, I heard from the girl working the tent that Burton wouldn’t blame the riders for impact from the bad conditions, so that’s a plus. I ended up trying out three setups for the day: Burton Feelgood Flying V with Diode bindings, Burton Aftermath with Malavita Restricted EST bindings and the Burton Fortress with Burton Escapade bindings. Halfway through the day I ran into my old co-worker Delaney to take a couple laps together and got a couple shots of him riding in the parks. A bunch of features are missing from the easier Forest Trail park so you only have a jump line and a couple boxes to play on. Looking forward to demoing more boards this weekend and […]

Most of the holiday crowds have taken off so the mountain is almost back to normal for January. We headed up a little early in the morning to get the most of the conditions. It was the first time in a week that I was finally able to check out how the mountain conditions are holding up and the lack of snow is starting to show. You could see dirt in spots and there were a lot more rocks on the mountain. The jumps were gone from South Park so we headed over to Main to see what was up and stayed there most of the day. I got my laps in Forest Trail park which is setup really fun right now with smaller jumps and features.

Snow matters. Good snow conditions can help bring out skiers and snowboarders while bad conditions can mean finding other things to do instead of skiing/riding. I got back yesterday into town with a clear drive over Yosemite which is insane that there is no snow on that pass right now. I knew what to expect today: lift lines, manmade snow and a higher injury of collisions because of packed people on slim runs. After taking care of errands this morning, we headed up to the slopes to get our turns in before the masses arrived. Tomorrow I’ll be off the mountain with errands and taking my dog to the Vet but back on snow Thursday. Arbor Coda review is coming up soon!

The good news? The mountain is open. The bad news? Holiday crowds are riding limited terrain and manmade snow conditions. Today we headed up together for laps but stuck to South Park to ride the park. It’s frustrating because I’d love to ride other stuff but there’s really nothing open other than parks and riding outside of parks in my opinion is a recipe for injury. There are so many people on the limited runs that you feel like you will hit at any moment. We didn’t last long, just a couple hours and called it when the lines got long after lunch. Today I tried out the Spy Platoon goggles on the mountain. Here’s my best impression of the view, it’s like being in a big fishbowl with a huge view of the world. The peripheral is good but the vision from cheeks to forehead is insane. I’ll be out riding tomorrow to get my fix but probably skipping out the rest of this week. It’s just too busy and not enough snow to make it worth going.

Exactly one year ago today, I was riding over three feet of snow and this year I’m riding manmade snow with really sketchy conditions. It’s pretty crazy the variety of seasons that can come to Mammoth. I’ve been out of town the last couple days to spend time with family and came back to a busy Mammoth Mountain. Kicked off the shoes and put on the boots at chair 4 to avoid the crowds. Instead of walking on snow to get to the lifts, it’s dirt and mud. It’s pretty eye opening to see how much snow you are riding on top of and it’s not much right now. I met up with the skier and we ended up lapping South Park for most of the day. The park has a mix of jumps to a couple rails with the Jamie Lynn artwork and then a roller rhythm section that is a disaster waiting to happen. People would take them too deep and end up crashing hard in the flats. I had to laugh at the Spy Les Ettes goggle strap I’ve been rocking…pretty funny to wear that in the lift lines. Be on the lookout for a review of […]

After a record breaking season, it’s no surprise that a lack of snow could be a possibility and that’s certainly the case with Mammoth Mountain right now. The conditions are early season limited runs with hardpacked snow but luckily the park is on-par. It just means sleeping in a little bit longer and hoping the snow will soften up by the time you get up. I headed up to the mountain for a session with the skier and to get in some park laps on the Wasteland. I’ve been testing out the Arbor Wasteland in the park this week. This was a reader request, so make sure you tell me what you want me to ride. Most of the day I lapped through Forest Trail park or spent time with the skier in Main Park to get shots of him. Here’s my favorite with the classic Mammoth view in the background.

In my opinion, a good park chair offers up the best views, quickest laps and good people. Chair 6 at Mammoth definitely offers up all three of that list. I hit Chair 6 to get my park fix today, a little disgruntled at the lack of snow so the rest of the mountain can open fully but happy that atleast park is fun. I met up with the skier for laps. He’s on the Main Park skill level and I’m more Forest Park skill level but luckily they are next to each other on the mountain. We’ll hit up both or meet up halfway at the pipe each run. Today I ended up working on backside boardslides in Forest Trail on the flat boxes, just getting used to them again and having fun with it.

It was hard to believe it is almost December on the mountain, the conditions are like spring and the warm weather was out in full blast. Luckily the winds helped cool you down but it was definitely a hoodie kind of riding day on the slopes. I headed out for a ride break with the skier, he’s been lapping Main Park since getting his pass. Forest Trail is set up with more beginner features that you’d usually see over on the smaller park. It’s definitely fun for trying new stuff and getting back into the season without consequences.

When you work for a ski resort, you get used to working holidays and never enjoying the day off. This year, I was expecting to spend Thanksgiving with family so I asked for the time off but I ended up staying in Mammoth instead for my days off. I wasn’t sure about riding on Thanksgiving since it’d be busier but my friend Dan convinced me to hit up the mountain with him in the morning. Thanksgiving marked the start of the busyness on the mountain for snowboarding. But even though there were more people, lines weren’t too bad. We ended up sticking to Forest Trail and Main Park laps so we could kind of escape the busy runs. The best part about a 22′ pipe, is the fact that less people ride pipe and feel comfortable going through it so we pretty much had it to ourselves every lap through. Here’s a video of Dan’s pipe run.
