After a record breaking season, it’s no surprise that a lack of snow could be a possibility and that’s certainly the case with Mammoth Mountain right now. The conditions are early season limited runs with hardpacked snow but luckily the park is on-par. It just means sleeping in a little bit longer and hoping the snow will soften up by the time you get up. I headed up to the mountain for a session with the skier and to get in some park laps on the Wasteland. I’ve been testing out the Arbor Wasteland in the park this week. This was a reader request, so make sure you tell me what you want me to ride. Most of the day I lapped through Forest Trail park or spent time with the skier in Main Park to get shots of him. Here’s my favorite with the classic Mammoth view in the background.

We opened last Thursday for the season but I was gone for an extended weekend so didn’t get to ride Mammoth till today. Conditions were hardpacked still early season snow with bluebird skies. There weren’t too many people on the slopes so each run you pretty much went right up to the gates. I headed out with my co-worker Lauren for a much needed ride break. New season and new gear! Over the summer, someone requested the Oakley airbreak goggles and I made sure to get them for this winter. Today was day one of trying them out. I was actually surprised to see how well they fit with my Smith helmet. Before I got my iPhone I was keeping tabs of what apps to download for snowboarding and alpine replay came up. It basically uses your phone to track your stats on the mountain. I started using it for the last two runs of the day to get an idea of my vertical, speed and tons of other cool stuff. One of the new improvements at Mammoth this year was RFID gates. I’ve used them before and it’s pretty easy to get through and onto the chairlift. I do […]

I grew up skiing with my family and took the ski bus to the mountains but somewhere down the line I wanted to snowboard and snowboarding became my path for the past 17 seasons. Since then I’ve only stepped back on skis one other time until today. My co-worker Lauren and I rock the same shoe size which meant an easy switch to make her try snowboarding and me get back on skis. We ended up heading out for our lunch/ride break and later on Dan joined me for a couple turns. The fun part was it was exactly as I remembered it and while it’s been years, it didn’t feel like years. It was pretty humorous to go out to chair 6 rocking skis and poles. [singlepic id=11266 w=300 h=533 float=] Here’s Lauren quickly learning how to skate on a snowboard. This was her second time snowboarding after she learned her first lesson years ago. I was stoked since she picked it the balance quickly and was sideslipping/falling leaf the mountain up. A longer day and she would have been turning. [singlepic id=11267 w=300 h=533 float=] We ended up lapping chair 6 next to the park to get out […]
