You know it’s a great powder day when the sun comes out to show off all the new snow and goods on the mountain. Despite the holiday rush, today was an awesome day just with longer lift lines. I headed out for a lunch ride break with Dan just in time for some lift openings. It was a split decision but we headed to the backside to get in our lunch turns. Just in time for chair #14 opening which had a good line up going but it was worth the wait. [singlepic id=10417 w=300 h=398 float=] We received a couple feet of new snow which meant some tricky spots where you needed tracks to get out and lots of speed. Our goal was to hit up the hemlocks which is through the backcountry gate and a hike up to drop in. [singlepic id=10418 w=500 h=281 float=] The view of the backside from the hemlocks hike. It was beautiful. People getting powder turns and a lot of people sticking to the one stretch of groomers. [singlepic id=10419 w=300 h=533 float=] Hiking up Hemlocks helped me forget that it was cold outside [singlepic id=10420 w=300 h=533 float=] Right next to the […]

The reports said a possible 2 feet of snow and the reports were right. It dumped 2 feet of snow overnight which meant digging my truck out this morning, just another day at Mammoth. Capita was a bit dismayed when she didn’t see the walkway so I had to dig out a trail for her to follow. The front porch and walkway this morning [singlepic id=10412 w=500 h=281 float=] I got to work early which is perfect for powder days cause it means early morning laps. The lifts were slow to get up due to weather but I figured I’d find someone to ride with before I headed out. I ran into Trevor Jacob in the hallway, so geared up and got ready to go out with him and Ross Baker. We headed to chair #2 and then ended up getting a ride back to Main Lodge since it didn’t look like it’d open soon. By the time I came back to my office, I saw lift #1 running and headed back out to the snow. This time no lines despite it being the crazy busy week and the storm was in full force.
It’s the busy time when resort towns are packed with vacationers that help fund our towns and mountains. Usually I stay off the mountain this week since it’s so busy but today I was feeling the itch, I just needed to get out onto the snow to make a couple turns. We’re getting hit with another snowstorm, this one could deliver up to 2 feet of fresh snow tonight but today it meant winds, low visibility and some new snow on the runs. [singlepic id=10410 w=500 h=281 float=] Most people would love to have a ton of boards but I’m the opposite, it’s a hassle to have more boards than I need. This summer at Hood was a good example of why I had too many boards and the end result was I left three of them at Windells Camp without even realizing it. It took about two months to remember I owned them and wondered where they were. Luckily my friend Lisa is at Windells Academy so she found them, kept one (per my guidelines), shipped one to a friend and shipped the other to me. The other was the Never Summer Infinity that I’d been meaning to ride […]

It’s been almost a week without seeing the sun, with storms pounding Mammoth and 11-17 feet of snow dropping on the mountain. An insane week of snowfall to say the least. But today the sun came out showing just how much powder is still available and the top of the mountain finally opened up. Normally I’m behind the camera but today I was the snowboarder in front of the camera, willing to hike and hike again to get some shots of the recent powder. So for the first time in my blog’s history, you’ll see the majority of photos of myself instead of from my perspective. Joani, Justin and myself on the lift [singlepic id=10373 w=500 h=281 float=] I was working this morning but was asked to head outside on the slopes for filming, so I geared up and hit the mountain with our director of marketing & communications Joani and filmer Justin. We got a couple laps in some powder on chair #1 and then headed over to chair #12. Joani had to go in after a couple laps but I was able to stay out longer and get some more footage. Brad Peatross is the art director […]

The numbers keep adding up, 8ft, 10ft, 11ft. Each day there’s more snow on the mountain that’s turning into a good base for the rest of the season. Last night we got another foot on the mountain and in some spots, it meant a couple feet deep of snow. Adam and Ben from TWS Snowboarding arrived in town late last night and we hit up the mountain today for an early morning of riding before I headed into work. The first stop this morning was chair #22 which was ripe for the picking and one of my favorite lifts so far when the top of the mountain isn’t open. [singlepic id=10364 w=300 h=533 float=] I had the helmet cam on so captured a couple of the runs again. It was definitely a day to have the cam! Mammoth 12/22/10 from Shayboarder on Vimeo. Ben and myself on the lift [singlepic id=10365 w=1000 h=533 float=] Plenty of powder to be enjoyed. It was definitely a great day, one run in particular was insane. Just untouched powder and just me making tracks.
I’m addicted to coffee. Maybe because I grew up in Seattle but I love coffee. However nothing beats waking up and starting the day than getting fresh powder turns. I’d gladly trade in all the coffee for fresh tracks in the morning. I woke up to bluebird skies which meant an amazing powder morning on the mountain and when my co-worker Ashley mentioned going out for a couple fresh tracks, I was game. Early this morning only a couple lifts were open so we hit up the gondola then headed to chair #2 then back to the gondola for the morning. It was idealic outside, sunny skies and lots of untouched powder on the mountain. [singlepic id=10358 w=500 h=281 float=] I tried to get some powder shots but really what shows everything is the vholdr helmet cam I was wearing. So I made a video with two runs that we did. I love powder turns! Mammoth 12/21/10 from Shayboarder on Vimeo. Ashley snapped this photo of me spraying up some powder from her footage on the flip camera on a stick. It was rad to see her footage at the end of the day and how it looks from that […]

All in a day’s work. Today was the craziest day for snowfall, it buried my truck in the parking lot and even I was amazed to get it out. Then I couldn’t drive to work due to chain restrictions so left the truck in the village and caught the shuttle to the mountain. That was an adventure in itself but eventually made it to work. Of course working in marketing means sometimes having to showcase the latest conditions…which I gladly offer my services for. My good friend Ashley feels the same way so we get to test out conditions to make sure they are reported accurately. [singlepic id=10353 w=300 h=533 float=] Ashley and I ended up hiking up in knee to waist deep powder because the lifts in front of Main weren’t running yet and rode the new pow for the cameras. It was actually a blast because I got outside when it was an insanely busy day in the office and got to enjoy some of the powder. Snow lines [singlepic id=10354 w=300 h=533 float=] I guess the footage was sent out to news so if you saw a snowboarder in powder at Mammoth – it was me. […]
