It’s hard to believe most resorts are closed for the season when the season is still going strong in Mammoth. After this week we close some of the mountain but the Main Lodge to the top portion stays open till July 4. The conditions have been interesting, winter one day, spring the next. Today was spring with winds so the best choice was heading over to South Park to meet up with the skier and some of the aussies for laps. Everyday in Mammoth you are surrounded by pros – seriously, you are probably standing next to a Olympian/X-Games medalist or other big pro at the top of the pipe or parks most days. Today I ran into Todd Richards at the top of the South Park jump line and caught up with him. If you thought Todd was just a pretty face in snowboarding, boy are you mistaken. He’s got snowboarding dialed but he’s also got brains, wit and class, that he brings out on his website awsm.com. I didn’t get to see him ride but I did get him to pose for a “you’re gonna be on shayboarder.com” shot. [singlepic id=11391 w=500 h=281 float=] We made a couple laps […]

The morning was spent getting in some turns with the skier at Mammoth. His second day on the slopes wasn’t as nice as the first, the weather had turned flat light and definitely feeling the rough hits from the day before. We ended up lapping through the windy Main Park, windy South Park and settled on a couple easy laps through Forest Trail Park. First laps in South Park before the sun went away [singlepic id=10498 w=500 h=281 float=] The skier and myself [singlepic id=10499 w=500 h=281 float=] Getting in Forest Trail laps [singlepic id=10500 w=500 h=281 float=] I headed into work since it was a busy day but stoked to get some morning turns with my favorite skier.

Since moving to Mammoth, I haven’t had too many Colorado people come out and visit. But I finally got one visitor who booked his ticket and made plans to leave Crested Butte to check out what Mammoth had to offer. I’d been looking forward to his visit for weeks and he finally arrived in town last night. I call him the skier. We have history and both love the mountain. The Skier at Mammoth [singlepic id=10492 w=500 h=281 float=] It ended up being the perfect day, rode together all day and showed him Mammoth’s parks. We arrived early on the mountain with barely anyone in Main Park or South Park which meant he got to see perfection at its best on the mountain. [singlepic id=10493 w=500 h=281 float=] Most of the day was spent lapping South Park with a much needed break for some beverages and then heading to Main Park. The setup right now is mock X-games so you can get your practice on or just try your hand at the same course the pros are on.
Sundays are my favorite day of the week in Mammoth. It’s the day that I can sleep in, relax with my dog in the morning and hit up the slopes for the afternoon when it gets quiet in town again. Adina, Dan and Ashley at the top of the mountain [singlepic id=10312 w=500 h=281 float=] It was a beautiful day on the slopes with sunny blue skies and really hardpacked conditions. Definitely a day to hold your edges are sharp for the icy spots. I headed out with Adina, Dan and Ashley for the afternoon, I must say we have a blast in the gondola and chairlifts rides. Adina skiing down [singlepic id=10313 w=500 h=281 float=] Ashley pausing on the mountain [singlepic id=10314 w=500 h=281 float=] We started with a easy run on Discovery chair for the easiest park, then headed up the gondola for a lap, then chair #3 for another lap and made our way near Canyon for a couple more park runs then back to Forest Trail park. Good mix of park and freeriding for the day.
Each day that I ride, I’m finding new terrain, new runs and getting a better taste of what’s to come this winter. It’s a rad experience to be riding somewhere totally new and calling it my home mountain. Today Dan and I headed out for some lunch laps and made our way over to Chair #4 to meet up with Ashley for a couple laps. We ended up seeing chair #22 moving and headed there just in time to make the 4th chairlift up to the top. I had heard that the avy chutes offered up some good turns when the wind blows the snow around. [singlepic id=10293 w=300 h=533 float=] Ashley and Dan at the top of chair #22 strapped in and about to drop into the avy chutes [singlepic id=10295 w=300 h=533 float=] Looking down the chute [singlepic id=10294 w=500 h=281 float=] The first turns were a bit sketchy with some rocks but after that it opened up into deeper powder turns that made it all worth it.
Just a sunday in the park at Mammoth Mountain. Got the wake up call from Pat this morning telling me to get up, enjoy the sunshine snowboarding before the storm rolls into town. He had a good point so I got my gear, grabbed breakfast and parked the car at Chair #2 to meet up with him. Lazy sunday on the mountain [singlepic id=10278 w=500 h=281 float=] We hit up Forest Trail park off of chair #6 for the morning, headed over to South Park for a little bit and then back to Forest Trail. I’m starting to jump again so I like Forest Trail versus stepping it up bigger in South Park. We just kept lapping and the best part was there was really no one at Main Park/Forest Trail so we just cruised. [singlepic id=10280 w=500 h=281 float=] Pat trying out a wicked narrow stance for a couple runs [singlepic id=10279 w=500 h=281 float=] Ended the day as the clouds started to come in and now watching it snow outside. Tomorrow looks like a powder day in Mammoth!

After yesterday’s riding, I was expecting today to be much of the same low visibility, overcast weather but when I looked outside at lunch the sun was shining! It was easy to head out onto the slopes with my co-worker Justin for a couple laps. We headed over to South Park to check out the features in that terrain park and meet up with my friend Daniel for some turns. [singlepic id=10255 w=1000 h=563 float=] Today was trying out the Arbor Formula with the Mountain system, I had to MacGyver shit up since my screws are longer than the inserts on the Arbor, you’d be amazed at how good paperclips are for washers. It’s been interesting this winter not having as many demos nearby but being able to borrow boards directly from companies or reps. I really appreciate it when I can borrow gear because it helps get reviews on here and now each board gets more days on them! [singlepic id=10253 w=1000 h=563 float=] Daniel on the rainbow rail just a tap tap tapperoo though!
