I thought I had closed out Stevens Pass for the season when Closing Day went down on May 6 but turns out, the snow is still there and it’s too hard to resist playing on it. The mountain looked as if Closing Day never happened, there are few rock spots and still a ton of snow leftover from this winter. My buddy Nate just returned to the area after a winter in Utah and mentioned heading up for a hike/jib session. I was up for taking photos and being back on the snow even for a couple hours. We met with a couple of his friends in the parking lot to head up to the top of the Top Phlight terrain park. Hiking up after a couple days of a 101 temperature made for a really slow dizzy hike. Our first stop was one of the few jumps left in the park. Most had been melted down or destroyed so the boys started raking, shoveling and salting to get the feature jumpable. The boys ended up sessioning the jump, filming in between and working on a variety of tricks. Here’s my shot of Nate Cruise, one of the first shots […]

It was an amazing season for snowfall at Stevens Pass; 564″ total snowfall for the 2011/12 season, plenty of powder days and an extended season through May for riding. But it was also a rough season for Stevens Pass. Amazing people were taken from us and the local watering hole was burned down towards the end of the season. It was a season of highs and lows but people came together to end the season today the only way we know how…skiing, snowboarding, throwing back a couple beers, high fives, hugs and smiles. For the most part, Stevens Pass has been my home mountain this season. Chris and Stevens welcomed me back with open arms as I struggled to figure out this winter. I ended up traveling more than expected but it was good to come home each trip to a mountain that I love. I thought when I left for Alaska that I was done for the season at Stevens but it ended up that I was able to come partake in the closing weekend for the extended season. I headed up to the mountain with Sarah and Erik to get our shred on. We were joined by Dennis […]

Memorial Weekend was a busy one in Mammoth. The town noticeably became busier as the weekend approached and with the winter storm I stayed inside for most of it. But Monday arrived with sunshine and not as many crowds so I headed out to the lifts to help out for the afternoon. I haven’t spent much time on chair #23 this season but definitely will start to spend more time up there now. Today I helped out with lifts so I shadowed chair #23 for the day working the top and bottom of the lift. It’s good to get out of the office and lets me interact with guests. Dropping in at the end of the day was fun but definitely some ice for the first section, then it got a lot better. I was a bit slow and taking it easy.

It was an early morning at Mammoth! Woke up and made it to the lifts at 7:30am to start helping out at chair #3 for the morning. It meant getting up for the corduroy lines and no one on the mountain. While I was working the lift, I heard from a guest that a cub was nearby. Pretty crazy that wildlife can be out on the mountain. Chair #3 will soon become the spring park chair in a matter of weeks. Right now they are building the spring pipe and it should be open in the next week.

Lunch breaks on chair #6 are always fun especially when you run into familiar faces while lapping. I took a quick break and ran into Dee Dee which meant fun laps through Forest Trail and then the pipe to finish off each run. Usually on these types of days, I work on my own park riding and take less photos cause I’m having too much fun.

The weather wasn’t supposed to be cooperating for Saturday but it didn’t matter one bit. The mix of clouds and slight rain drops didn’t impact the fun that was had. I left the skier at home (ankle injury) and headed up to the mountain to see who was around. It worked out that after a couple laps by myself, I ran into Eric and Lucien from Flow Snowboards who were up product testing for the weekend. Later on Michelle joined up with us for some laps. The mountain conditions have been insanely good. I have to remind myself that it’s mid-May and the conditions are just as good as mid-winter on the mountain. Yesterday I swung by P3 board shop in town to drop off the 2012 Never Summer Proto so they could have it as a demo board and Trotter let me borrow the 2012 Lib Tech Trice so I could try it out. This has been that one board that is always requested but I’ve been hesitant to try it because it’s a mid-wide but it’s definitely not the first wider board I’ve ridden so finally caved in to trying it out. After a couple warm up runs […]

Usually I can walk outside the building to chair 6, wait a couple minutes, run into someone I know lapping park and have a riding buddy for a couple laps. Today was not that day, waited, called, texted and nothing. Good thing I had my music to listen to. I ended up lapping 6 for a good lunch break and just having fun as best as I could without anyone to ride with. I ended up keeping the camera in the pocket, only grabbed one shot and that was my day. Looking forward to the weekend. Already planning to ride one day and take one day off. That’s the best part about spring is having at least one weekend day like a mini vacation.

It’s hard to believe it’s May outside when there is a couple inches of new snow at your house, along the highway and falling at resorts around Colorado. Loveland is a true freeriders mountain in Colorado with the open terrain and drops. It’s off the beaten path for many skiers & snowboarders that drive by it everyday on their way to Vail or Intrawest Resorts. It’s my favorite mountain in that you can always find untracked lines and the parking lot is a mix of mud/snow and good times without bad vibes. I started the 2010 season off at Loveland and today was the closing day so it meant closing it out in good fun on the terrain. From Steamboat it’s a 2 hour drive to Loveland so Philip and I carpooled together. We made it just in time to find a parking spot in the valley (overflow) parking, ran into Sonny & Molly gearing up and we were able to catch a ride from a cougar to bypass the long shuttle line so we could get to the base. [singlepic id=8943 w=400 h=300 float=] Despite the parking lots being very full, the mountain was empty except for the base […]
