Monument was started in 2001 and is driven by art which is apparent in their boards each season. By working with a roster of established and emerging artists to infuse art into snowboarding, Monument brings inspired high quality products for snowboarder. For 10-11 Monument works with artist Daniel Jackson to commemorate their limited artist series, Daniel was the first artist to contribute in the series and now returns to the project. Monument continues their earth science project (ESP) materials that use clean and renewable resources like bamboo in the core and sidewalls (Terra walls). Their ESP cores that range from poplar, bamboo and x-w00d depending on the type of core for each model. The muffle walls help reduce teeth chattering vibrations in icy conditions and high speeds down the mountain. New for 10-11, all Monument models come in reverse camber for the 155cm board model.
Location: Breckenridge, Colorado Snow Conditions: Bluebird skies with hardpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the Monument 777 with Rome Shifts and my Rome Vamps size 8. First Impression: A board to ride everywhere on the mountain Size: 153cm Weight: light Flex: It was a good medium flex, not a soft buttery board but not a stiff charging board either. All mountain ride and handle park to mountain flex. Good torsional flex which made it great for quick turns through the trees and handling a variety of conditions. Turning: The 777 was easier to flex torsionally, especially in the trees riding it could maneuver quickly edge to edge and absorb bumpy terrain very well. Good response edge to edge, I didn’t find myself waiting for the board to be on edge and really was best with shorter quick radius turns. Longer radius turns were harder to pull out and it felt better with shorter turns. Stable: The bamboo sidewalls held an edge when riding the halfpipe, gripped the snow. When dealing with bumpy terrain and trying to go fast, I didn’t feel as stable but when the runs were groomed felt fine with making turns. It’s not a board meant for charging, […]

Setup: I rode the Monument Memento Mori with Rome Shifts and my Rome Vamps size 8. First Impression: Light and fast Size: 158cm Weight: lighter than average Flex: Overall a stiffer flex, longitudinally and torsionally. I found it harder to turn torsionally, not allowing as much quick response for me. With the stiffer flex, it helped make it more stable when carving but also great for superpipe which I was content with how it rode there. I tried to tail press and it was doable but not easy. Turning: The best turns for me were the long drawn out S turns on the memento mori, when I took it into the trees where I needed some quick response and quicker turns I didn’t feel as confident in getting those turns. The bamboo sidewalls were fun to ride, it was hardpacked groomers but they held an edge just fine. The board made consistent, predictable turns and those felt the best. Stable: I had no problems with feeling stable on the groomers and hardpacked snow. When I took it through some trees and crusty old snow, the maneuverability was a bit harder […]

I came down to Breckenridge to spend the weekend riding with the Monument crew, yesterday was the first day and today was another fun day on the mountain. Dave, Jeremy, Connor and myself made it up to ride this morning, it took some time to get ready and to Breckenridge but we made it. I did watch a hilarious scraping job by Jeremy to make it all worth it. I spent today riding the 153 Monument 777 which I’ll be reviewing soon. Connor riding through the trees [singlepic id=6145 w=400 h=300 float=] Connor showed us some fun log jibs from the big size to the smaller size ones. This one was broken and had a gap in between, with some nails sticking out. Jeremy didn’t cease to amaze me that he would hit it, luckily he missed the nails. [singlepic id=6146 w=400 h=300 float=] Yesterday I stayed out of the spraying game, but today I was full force ready to go with the 777. Dave got me pretty good, Jeremy got me pretty good. But I made sure to get them back, got Dave the best at the base with the heavy slushy snow that went up his nose. Wish I […]

Earlier this week Chad from Monument emailed me to let me know that Dave the co-owner and some of the Monument team would be in Breckenridge this weekend. I spoke with Dave and made plans to head down to tag along with the crew and check out the boards while riding with them. Dave’s been blogging on the Monument site as well about the experience. Today we managed to get out by 8am to a jump outside Breckenridge that the guys had built for some filming and photos. It was fun watching behind the scenes of a company getting film and footage of their riders. You can check out their 08-09 website which is up and running, featuring blogs, products, radio air and a variety of stuff to keep you occupied. I personally enjoy watching the images change. The first time I saw a Monument Snowboard was at SIA 2007 and I actually walked by the “And I will always love you” model and stopped dead in my tracks. Really, it was more like porn and snowboarding but done classy. Since then I’ve known of them, but haven’t yet tried them. “Each year Monument curates an artist series, that represents our entire collection, from established and emerging artists alike. This year we are pleased to present 5 artists to join our Artist Network and create boards for the 2008-09 collection. These artists include New York graffiti artist and Krink creator, Craig Costello, Los Angeles based artist and fashion designer Kime Buzzelli, Philadelphia artist and sweatheart musician Thom Lessner, Flaunt magazine creative director and artist Todd Tourso, and lastly the mysterious Owleyes.
