After spending Tuesday in the Bike Park with the bumps and bends clinic, today was about getting back on the same trails and motivating myself to continue to conquer them while working on my riding. Conditions were dry and sunny but the breeze up and down on the ride were perfect for mountain biking. I started out on Live Wire, then headed over to Gypsy for a couple laps and ended the day on easier Coaster and Easy Rider to get back to my truck. Gypsy has been a good trail for me. Super hard, heart pounding with technical rocks and really fun rideable features like rocks to bridges, rock stairs, crazy rock drops, barrels to rocks. Basically imagine a lot of rocks from small to big, sharp to dull on one run. I’ve managed to ride every feature in place except this one below. There’s something about the rocks in place especially the smaller ones that can move on you. I’ll have to redeem myself someday but thankfully I walked around it whenever I encountered it. I was having a great run on Gypsy until right before the wall ride, I was coming in to hit it and felt […]

What a difference a resort looks like in the winter and the summer. In January I was lapping snow covered trails (even got a couple powder days) and here I am in July riding different trails on the same terrain at Northstar Resort. From boots to bike pads. Once I knew I’d be spending time in Lake Tahoe, I made sure to arrange a visit to ride Northstar’s Bike Park. It’s been fun to ride new terrain and really test my skills this summer as I travel to different Bike Parks. I arrived early to the Northstar village to make sure I had time to stop into the marketing department and thank them for setting up my visit. Then I waited at the Plaza Bikes to meet up with my Bike Academy coach, Luke Sheppard, for a bumps and bends clinic. Since learning to mountain bike last summer, I learned on my own with tips and it wasn’t until this summer that I started taking clinics to get technique down and better my skills. Luke and I headed up the Tahoe Zephyr Express lift to start the day of riding. After talking about my bike park experience, we headed to […]

There are good days and then there are great days. The past two days in Tahoe have been great days, the snow finally arrived and delivered amazing powder runs. I couldn’t believe how quickly the conditions changed on the mountain and just in time for my last day in Tahoe. After dropping off my rental car in South Lake, we headed up to Northstar for the day. Yesterday was about powder on the groomers and today was about powder in the trees. There were risks underneath the snow with trees, branches, rocks…but the reward was worth it and picking your line while watching the snow for bumps was everything. Most of these pics were taken after 11am on the mountain, definitely a lot of snow for everyone to enjoy all day long. Today’s conditions were epic. The snow was light and fluffy, the coverage was getting filled in and the backside of the mountain was ideal. I had only ridden these runs earlier this season on the groomers and now could get a good feel for the wide open to tree runs that they offered up. It’s hard to capture the happiness that comes with riding powder but today I […]

I had been hoping to return to Tahoe before the season ended since I had my Tahoe Pass and wanted to spend time on the mountain with friends. The time finally came when flights were affordable, access was easy into Reno and my friends had time off from work to ride and hang out. It’s been a rough season for Tahoe, definitely not the normal Tahoe year for snowfall but it doesn’t mean the mountain is bad. It’s not, the groomers are fun, the parks are great and there’s a lot less people up on the mountains. It felt good to return to sunshine for a day of snowboarding and I Snowboarding is so much better when you have someone to share it with. I spent today riding with my friend Ashley, we both worked at Mammoth together and had a blast venturing into park with Kumara later on in the day. Of course we also stretched after a couple laps to really warm up. Compared to a month ago, the parks at Northstar have grown up quite a bit with features. The pipe is up and running, the park has the main line and now branches off into a […]

Things are about to change in Tahoe; the sunshine has disappeared and clouds are starting to reappear on the mountains. It’s a sign that snow is coming. After the dismal conditions at Mammoth, I headed north to get in soft groomer laps at Northstar today. The decision paid off with long laps, runs through the park and a fun day riding by myself at Northstar. It was a colder day on the slopes, I brought my facemask to stay a bit warmer while riding. The clouds made it so there was some flatlight conditions on the slopes. But the mountain was pretty quiet, the park was the busiest run and it wasn’t even that busy. I got in a good amount of laps before meeting Adam at the base. It’s safety month on the slopes and Northstar put up a bunch of signs to re-iterate skiing and snowboarding safely on the mountain.

After a late night with the ShreddyTimes crew, today started with a beautiful view of Lake Tahoe and a fun day of shred on the slopes. Sometimes the best cure for a late night is getting moving and turning again. Ashley and I headed back to Northstar to get in a couple midday laps together before I headed back to Mammoth and she headed back to South Lake Tahoe. We headed into the Village and grabbed coffee before hitting the slopes. The sun was shining, groomers were groomed and the runs were almost to ourselves. After a couple warm-up laps, it was time to get into the park and just lap our favorite doable features. I was really stoked on Ashley getting comfortable on the flat boxes in the park especially since they had bombholes after the boxes that you had to ride out of. The Shaun White pipe opened up at noon (it was closed for Revolution Tour practice in the morning) so we headed there for a humble lap through. Humble because everyone else was airing out of the pipe and we just took it easy, cruising up the walls. Ended the afternoon early so I could make the […]

With no new snow in California and the roads clear to explore, it meant heading up to Northstar for a couple days to get in riding time. I was really stoked because it meant being able to hang out with the Shreddy Times crew when we got off the mountain. I made the drive from Mammoth to Northstar in the morning just in time to meet my friend Ashley on the slopes for a day of shred. Conditions since the last time I visited are more hardpacked and some icy spots but coverage is good and you have a ton of riding terrain open (including long runs) and the parks are on dial for the Revolution Tour. We explored the mountain in the morning and rode as many lifts as we could find. After a couple long runs on the backside, we headed to Zephyr Lodge to check it out and then back to the parks to work on our skills (more like non-skills). In the park at the end of the day we finally met up with Jenise and got in a couple laps with her. She’s going to be competing in the Revolution Tour so it was fun […]

What a day. Today made my Thanksgiving weekend. Maybe it was the lack of crowds, the good conditions, the sunshine or maybe it was all those combined with good people. Ever since visiting Northstar last weekend, it just keeps getting better and better. Today we woke up early, left a sleeping house in North Tahoe and made our way to Northstar for a morning of shred before heading back to Mammoth. At the base, the skier and I met up with our good friend Adam and later on joined up with Jenise for park laps. The sun was out, the temperatures were slightly warmer and the mountain was ours (well, ours and a couple others). We headed up to the top of the mountain to make good morning laps, carving up the corduroy with runs to ourselves and could ride up to the lift with no lines each time. One thing I’ve noticed at Northstar is the employees are happy and it shows. It makes you happy to be around happy people who are having fun. After warming up with laps on the Comstock Express lift, we headed over to Vista Express to lap the park and have fun. The park […]

One of my goals this season has been to explore and ride a variety of other mountains in California. Tahoe received new snow yesterday just in time for Northstar’s Opening Weekend so we packed up the car and headed to Tahoe last night so we could get first tracks this morning. The best part was waking up this morning near Northstar, seeing new snow on the ground and watching the snow still coming down this morning. I had never been to Northstar before so I was really excited to finally check it out and ride this popular resort. We found parking, wondered through the Village with the help of hosts and ended up at the season pass office to pick up our tickets for the day. Huge thanks to Jessica and Adam for the tickets and great time. The park offered up a lot of fun. I kept it to a minimum just hitting the easy box while the skier went for the harder rails and boxes. There were a couple lifts open this weekend and the new snow definitely made for some great powder turns on the runs that were open. We rode a couple trails off of the […]
