In my opinion, a good park chair offers up the best views, quickest laps and good people. Chair 6 at Mammoth definitely offers up all three of that list. I hit Chair 6 to get my park fix today, a little disgruntled at the lack of snow so the rest of the mountain can open fully but happy that atleast park is fun. I met up with the skier for laps. He’s on the Main Park skill level and I’m more Forest Park skill level but luckily they are next to each other on the mountain. We’ll hit up both or meet up halfway at the pipe each run. Today I ended up working on backside boardslides in Forest Trail on the flat boxes, just getting used to them again and having fun with it.

It was hard to believe it is almost December on the mountain, the conditions are like spring and the warm weather was out in full blast. Luckily the winds helped cool you down but it was definitely a hoodie kind of riding day on the slopes. I headed out for a ride break with the skier, he’s been lapping Main Park since getting his pass. Forest Trail is set up with more beginner features that you’d usually see over on the smaller park. It’s definitely fun for trying new stuff and getting back into the season without consequences.

What a day. Today made my Thanksgiving weekend. Maybe it was the lack of crowds, the good conditions, the sunshine or maybe it was all those combined with good people. Ever since visiting Northstar last weekend, it just keeps getting better and better. Today we woke up early, left a sleeping house in North Tahoe and made our way to Northstar for a morning of shred before heading back to Mammoth. At the base, the skier and I met up with our good friend Adam and later on joined up with Jenise for park laps. The sun was out, the temperatures were slightly warmer and the mountain was ours (well, ours and a couple others). We headed up to the top of the mountain to make good morning laps, carving up the corduroy with runs to ourselves and could ride up to the lift with no lines each time. One thing I’ve noticed at Northstar is the employees are happy and it shows. It makes you happy to be around happy people who are having fun. After warming up with laps on the Comstock Express lift, we headed over to Vista Express to lap the park and have fun. The park […]

When you work for a ski resort, you get used to working holidays and never enjoying the day off. This year, I was expecting to spend Thanksgiving with family so I asked for the time off but I ended up staying in Mammoth instead for my days off. I wasn’t sure about riding on Thanksgiving since it’d be busier but my friend Dan convinced me to hit up the mountain with him in the morning. Thanksgiving marked the start of the busyness on the mountain for snowboarding. But even though there were more people, lines weren’t too bad. We ended up sticking to Forest Trail and Main Park laps so we could kind of escape the busy runs. The best part about a 22′ pipe, is the fact that less people ride pipe and feel comfortable going through it so we pretty much had it to ourselves every lap through. Here’s a video of Dan’s pipe run.

Last year I believe it was almost January before the pipe was completed. This year it’s November and the Mammoth 22′ pipe opened today, a whole month before last season. It helped make the mountain look a little bit more like winter but we still need more snow to make for a total winter experience. I headed out on my ride break so I could lap the mountain, freeride and get in some pipe runs with Pat Stahl and his friends for some fun laps on the mountain. We lapped through park, which has a bunch of features and hopefully more park opening this week. I cannot wait for Forest Trail to open, it’s my favorite on the mountain.

Only a couple days till Thanksgiving and it’s starting to pick up around town and the mountain already. My Monday morning started with bluebird skies and leftover powder from the weekend. By the time I made it onto the slopes to meet up with friends, the winds had picked up and more terrain had opened up. I met up with Liz and Hunter from the Brewery and Lindsey from Entourage for a couple laps. We found a fun run that we stuck to for most of the ride break.

One of my goals this season has been to explore and ride a variety of other mountains in California. Tahoe received new snow yesterday just in time for Northstar’s Opening Weekend so we packed up the car and headed to Tahoe last night so we could get first tracks this morning. The best part was waking up this morning near Northstar, seeing new snow on the ground and watching the snow still coming down this morning. I had never been to Northstar before so I was really excited to finally check it out and ride this popular resort. We found parking, wondered through the Village with the help of hosts and ended up at the season pass office to pick up our tickets for the day. Huge thanks to Jessica and Adam for the tickets and great time. The park offered up a lot of fun. I kept it to a minimum just hitting the easy box while the skier went for the harder rails and boxes. There were a couple lifts open this weekend and the new snow definitely made for some great powder turns on the runs that were open. We rode a couple trails off of the […]

On Thursday, the winds were starting to pick up on the slopes just in time for a lunch ride break with friends. I texted around to see who was coming up and got the girls together for a couple laps. There was a brief detour of snowboarding since Liz and I got stuck on Chair 1 for a good twenty minutes but we got a free drink out of the wait. Conditions were hard and sheet ice in spots. I was lapping with the Zion Wonk to see how it would do on some bulletproof conditions and it was fine for the day. Lindsay (SnowKangaroo) moved out from the east coast and is loving life on the Unbound Entourage this year. We met up for a couple laps together. Definitely in need of more snow on the mountain so hoping for storms to start arriving.

As I made my way up to Northern California to visit family, a stop at Boreal was the most logical choice for a detour. They opened in October for the season but I missed opening weekend since I was in San Francisco. Today it was an easy stop off the highway for a couple park laps with Dan since we both were in North Lake Tahoe for the day. A huge thanks to Jon in marketing for the passes for the day. To those not familiar with Boreal, it’s ideal for those who love park and jibbing. For today’s riding, they had three chairlifts open and two chairlifts were for park laps. It was a good mix of small to intermediate features on the mountain. Of course we forgot that it was a holiday and day off for many people so the parking lot was getting full when we arrived. It was a busy day on the slopes and even crazier how many people really sent it without thinking twice. For the top to bottom run, it meant avoiding the sitting ducks on the slopes and in the park, always keeping an eye out for anyone out of control. Definitely […]

Thanksgiving Day takes on a different meaning when you live in a resort town and work for the mountain. It’s a day that you spend working and generally spend the dinner with friends because getting time off to visit family is almost impossible. I worked this morning and made time to get out for a couple runs with friends and opted out of dinner since I’ve been feeling sick (of course you can still snowboard when you are sick). Currently Steamboat has two chairlifts open (Christie Peak Express and Preview) which means that Christie Peak is packed. Tomorrow the gondola opens so it’ll be a lot less crowded but when I looked out the window this morning this is how the lines looked.
