With the motto “handcrafted by expensive machines” its easy to love O-matic snowboards with their fun no-BS approach to snowboarding. Beyond the company and the names behind it, once you ride the boards you aren’t disappointed by the little shred company that could. O-matic snowboards was the last stop on Day 2 and located in beautiful Encinitas in Southern California. When I was driving through town I wondered how hard it would be to spot the snowboard offices but it’s not hard to miss the massive poster that fills the window and with front row parking I found myself soon to walk into O-matic Snowboards. [singlepic id=6693 w=395 h=297 float=] Upon walking into O-matic you get the full tour, almost everything is in sight of the front door which makes it very customer orientated with all eyes on the prize. I was faced with Jason Kanes and Tanya Otero who would be my tour guides for the afternoon. The best part was sitting down with both of them and just talking (some off the record so for my ears only) and what’s coming up for O-matic including possible changes in store for their snowboards.
Because I rode both models with regular camber and BS Technology, I’m putting the review as one but I’ll write about how each rode with the different technology. I took both boards on the same runs. Location: Keystone, Colorado Snow Conditions: Overcast/Bluebird with hardpacked groomers to a mixture of conditions. Setup: I rode the O-matic Extr-eco regular camber with Drake SuperSport bindings and the BS Technology board with Union Forces in my Rome Vamps size 8. First Impression Comparison: The BS board didn’t remind me of TBT as I was expecting. Size: 154cm for both models Weight: average Flex: The flex difference between the two wasn’t very noticeable, they both were similiar in flex for riding. Stiffer towards the tip and tail with a softer flex between the bindings, on the BS board it was noticeable that it was easier to press and butter than with the regular cambered board. It was easy to torsionally flex and get into sharp quicker turns. Overall the board isn’t soft, it’s not stiff but definitely towards the softer side of the midway point. Turning: The BS rocker made the board a lot easier to turn and less likely to catch an edge with […]

Location: Keystone, Colorado Snow Conditions: Overcast with hardpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the O-matic Sweet with Technine Nines and my Rome Vamps size 8. First Impression: Probably the best graphics I have seen and just a good around board. Size: 158cm Weight: average Flex: All around the flex was midway between stiff and soft which made it good for everything riding. I found it relatively stiff on the nose and tail, making it a little harder to press but good for pop. Between the bindings it rode softer, easy to torsionally flex it and really get good response from sharp turns. Turning: I found the board really responsive edge to edge, easy to maneuver into turn initiations. The sidecut allowed for quick short radius turns and those felt the most fun with the board. The longer radius spread out high speed turns didn’t feel as stable but I wouldn’t expect that from this board either. Stable: The most unstable feeling I got was in the bindings to board. Longer turns weren’t as stable as taking turns slower and more short radius. Over bumps, it cut through some cruddy spots and held an edge when I wanted to go faster on […]

If you get the chance to meet the people behind O-matic or even just check out their catalog, they just radiate with fun and humor. That fun and humor goes into their boards and making them fun to ride without making it too techy or serious. From the first time I checked out O-matic I had hopes but you never know, when the insane sales went down on them and people scooped them up like mad…it was then that the reports came out how people loved their O-matic’s which helped the word of mouth go even further on the brand. Since then I’ve seen them more and more on the mountains. The B.S. (supposedly stands for bowed surface but I love the name) Technology is new on the extr-eco. The B.S. Technology combines reverse camber with a convex base that lifts the edges off the snow between the contact points while the center of the board remains in contact with the snow. You might think O-matic used oompa loompas to design this…but no, it was design robots who created the magic. O-matic stepped up for the boobs in 09-10 with a B4BC snowboard that really says how much […]

I have been riding snowboards for a living for a hair under 20 years (09 will be my 20 year mark) and co own a snowboard company called O-matic. Shay: What is your job title? Todd: My job title? Hmmm, that’s a good one. I guess brand direction, team mis-management, cheerleader, art director, gross youtube video finder, etc.Shay: Did your parents question your job choice? Todd: You know they more questioned my life choices. At that point in the sports evolution there was not anyone that was really making a solid living snowboarding. It really was not until I started getting enough money to sustain life without the help of the parental unit that they kind of got off my back and realized it was something that I could do and survive.
Have you ever just sat under a shaded tree contemplating the meaning of it all? Yeah me neither. However, I have had some pretty profound ideas while sitting on the toilet. What in the wide world of sports does this have to do with anything? Maybe nothing, maybe everything. Deep, huh? Anyhow, It is with great pleasure that Omatic Snowboards welcomes Michael Casanova to the family! While most of you have been bronzing the summer away, we at Omatic have been busy at work adding one of snowboarding’s best rail crushers to the team. Originally from Hudson WI, now living in Breckenridge CO, Nova has been winning rail events and turning heads on the scene for years. This past season, Mike has been concentrating on his video part with the Pirate Movie Production crew, throwing himself onto scary, hard, sharp, metal, pointy things, with stairs underneath and twirling over scary, hard, sharp, pointy things with rocks underneath. As if that’s not enough Nova recently took top honors at the Dew Tour rail jam in Portland, OR this past weekend. “I’m so amped to have Nova as part of the program, I think that he fits the whole scene very nicely.” […]

2008-2009 O-matic Celebrity Location: Keystone, Colorado Snow Conditions: Cold, overcast with hard packed groomed runs. Setup: I rode the O-matic celebrity with Flux Titan bindings and my Vans Omni Focus boots. First Impression: hey…this handles pretty good for a more freestyle specific board. Size: 158cmWeight: Average. I might be wrong on this since the flux were heavier, the board weight could be lighter than average. Flex: Definitely one of the more softer flex boards I rode for the day, but it was still stable to ride groomers. I liked that the nose and tail were softer while giving a good stiffer flex between the bindings allowing it to handle chop relatively good. Turning: Definitely a easy more mellow sidecut, with slower edge to edge response. By the end of the day it was a fun mellow ride for making turns, not aggressive and letting the rider slowly ease into each turn. Stable: It surprised me by cutting through the choppier terrain without any problems. I felt it a little unstable at higher speeds. Pop: Super poppy and easy to ollie with. You could just load back onto the tail and your already flying superman with the spring of the board. […]
