Two weeks ago I traveled to California with the sole mission to visit as many snowboard companies as I could, give away a snowboard and spend time with family. The end result was an amazing time on the west coast, a glimpse into the so-cal shred company life and the ability to see behind doors that some of us might never see. I had no reason to fly to southern California but when I knew I was going to northern California it only made sense to make a slight detour for the blog. It was my first trip where I was alone traveling which meant making sure I didn’t get lost and staying with friends along the way (thanks Justin and Moss!). The experience that came out of it was 48 hours of snowboard companies, good conversations and being able to check out some companies I’m fond of (unfortunately not all of them). For me personally the most memorable tour was Signals Factory because it was the first time I’ve been hands on in a factory, working with Dave to make an edge and then being able to hand paint the OG topsheet. But overall everyone I visited was such […]

What started out as a binding company has grown to become the number two binding company around the world. Flow has now become a triple threat with snowboards, boots and bindings to compliment each rider on their journey in the mountains. After 10 years of doing their designs, its no surprise that other companies now have similiar products and regardless whether it’s a love or hate relationship, they stand firm in progressing their product designs. Flow snowboards was the second stop of day two as I made my way south along the southern California coast hitting up the massive spread of snowboard companies. With an office in San Clemente Flow Snowboards might be disguised as a typical work office but upon entering you soon found the many posters, product, people and vibe that make it not your typical workplace. [singlepic id=6602 w=400 h=267 float=] Flow is no stranger to having a heavy line up of riders that win contests [singlepic id=6599 w=400 h=267 float=] Mark who handles the Flow Blog (FLOG) and his dog Thrasher were on hand to give me the tour of the office. Thrasher made sure to point out any possible paranormal sightings along the way.
It’s easy to imagine that snowboard publications are massive but in reality the people behind our favorite words, photos and events are a lot more home grown than you’d expect. Snowboarder has a huge name in the industry and continues the tradition of the passion of riding within a mix of written content and photograph evidence. The Snowboarder Magazine office was the second stop on the California adventure to visit their office in San Juan Capistrano. It was hard to imagine that just off I-5 lies a major player for snowboard magazines and an editor at the helm of the ship that many consider an icon in snowboarding. The crew was at lunch when I came by the office, so Pat swung back to pick me up and we headed to the local pizza place for their Wednesday $1 pizza’s before heading into the Snowboarder Magazine office to get the full tour. [singlepic id=6584 w=400 h=267 float=] Snowboarder Magazine shares an office with other action sports publications like Powder, Skateboarder among other names. In the back of the office lies the warehouse that stores all the archives of the publications.
The California adventure started with an early flight to Los Angeles on yesterday morning and once I received my rental car, I was off to visiting the snowboard companies in the Southern California area. The first stop of the adventure was 686, the outerwear and apparel company that brings new meaning to a three letter set of numbers. They have technical features, fun designs and an outlook that isn’t afraid to make it known what goes on behind the scenes. What many don’t know is 686 may be perceived as a larger brand but behind the curtain isn’t very many employees (around 20 or so) that keep the business running. I met up with Kristin Cusic Vice President of Marketing to get the full tour of 686 and check out the happenings behind a small company gone big. [singlepic id=6552 w=400 h=267 float=] Walking into 686 you know exactly where you are [singlepic id=6550 w=400 h=267 float=] The first part of the tour was the designers room where it was peacefully quiet since they operate on different hours. Currently they are working on 11-12 outerwear and some changes in store for two years ahead. That is all top secret so […]

Located in the heart of downtown Portland, Holden Outerwear doesn’t blend into the surroundings on the mountains with a easy to spot style of outerwear. With pro shredder Mikey LeBlanc in charge, the company continues to break out designs, colors and styles that riders want more of each season. I stopped by their offices in Portland last Wednesday to check in and see what goes on behind the scenes at Holden. When you first walk into Holden it isn’t your typical snowboarder that greets you at the door but a smooth skiing skier that says welcome to Holden. [singlepic id=6078 w=400 h=267 float=] The Portland office vibe is amazing and beautiful to be in. Holden’s office continues with pieces of outerwear around the office. [singlepic id=6079 w=400 h=267 float=] The first person who greeted me when I walked into Holden was Mikey LeBlanc. He is the man behind Holden, the genius, the shredder. He’s working here in the conference room and on his right was the 10-11 lines for Holden being created and completed.
All around the world are snowboard companies and in some cities like Portland, Oregon you have a variety of companies within a small area. During my trip to Portland, I stopped by the Bonfire Headquarters to find out what goes on behind the scenes at Bonfire Outerwear. Designed for the rough weather conditions that hit the Northwest and with Mt Hood just a drive away it’s not hard to find Bonfire outerwear year round on the slopes. [singlepic id=6039 w=400 h=267 float=] Bonfire Snowboarding [singlepic id=6040 w=400 h=267 float=] I arrived at the Bonfire offices on Wednesday morning, still a bit sore from the snowboarding adventures at Windell’s Camp all week. Rian Rhoe was kind enough to give me the tour around the offices.
