I was planning to stay in Steamboat through the weekend but on Thursday Ryan informed me that Burton would be at Breckenridge with 10-11 gear doing a private demo for the day and I could come swing by to try some of the boards. I ended up driving down to Breckenridge Friday night to hang out with Zac from Hybrid Sessions and his crew. We ended up partying it out late at Cecilia’s which was a great time but also meant a lack of sleep for the night. Resort town living, you get used to it. [singlepic id=7992 w=400 h=300 float=] Showed up at the demo and found Merril who runs the show ready to get me out on gear [singlepic id=7988 w=300 h=400 float=] I ended up taking out 4 snowboards for the day: Burton Whammy Bar (Marley Colab), Burton Feelgood Flying V, Burton Lipstick Flying V and Burton Ration. I rode the Lexa’s with wing and lexa’s regular. I’ll be putting reviews up on all of the gear. I think Whammy Bar was the favorite of the day for overall do everything board. [singlepic id=7991 w=400 h=300 float=] Since a lot of us stayed out late the night […]

What a long week it’s been, SIA and then the on-snow, then the death cough…well I’m finally getting back to blog business and thinking about the on-snow demos, writing the reviews up and getting ready to post them starting next week. SIA is really the time to see all the products but I always wait till I get to try them out in the element of the snow to determine if I like them or not. This year the on-snow was only 2 days long which wasn’t enough time, so I only ended up riding a couple boards & bindings each day. From the two days, here’s what I learned: -Union steps it up with the new toe straps and continues to be a very popular binding at the demos. I was able to take out the men’s flite and forces for next year. -Riding with no-backs is an interesting test, skate feeling and I will say I didn’t hate it. I can see why some of the signal guys and old school guys rock the no-backs on the mountain. More to come in a blog post of course. -The black snowboard of death is back and better than ever…good […]

Normally there’s a bit of a gap between SIA and the on-snow but this year they held the on-snow for Colorado in conjunction with the show so it was directly following the 4 days of busyness. I made my way up on Sunday with Joey to Winter Park where we would be staying slopeside in a condo with some of the Never Summer crew. [singlepic id=7619 w=400 h=300 float=] Sunday night I was finally able to rest up and get a good night’s sleep before the on-snow began. Conditions for the day were overcast with flat light and really hardpacked groomers with some icy spots.
In November each year there are two days where a range of companies come to Loveland to give shop employees the chance to try out the latest gear. Each year I attend the shop demo to get a better understanding of what boards you guys want to know more about. This year I drove down with Philip from the Click and Doug to attend the demos together. Despite the economy there were still a good amount of snowboard companies on hand, this year we had Rome, K2, Nitro, Forum, Burton, Salomon, Arbor, Unity, Never Summer, Capita, Union, Flow, Ride, Head, LTD, Lamar, Lib Tech, Roxy, GNU, Bent Metal and I’m sure I’m forgetting some others that were there. [singlepic id=6778 w=400 h=300 float=] This year we had bluebird sunny skies and hardpacked snow on the mountain. By the end of the day we’d get icy spots but overall conditions were similiar for both days. I ended up trying out these setups: Burton Custom V-rocker, Burton Lexa bindings, Forum Youngblood Chillydog, Forum Destroyer Chillydog, Forum Shaka bindings, Ride Machete, Ride Sigma Movement bindings, Rome Postermania 1985, and Union Contact bindings before calling it a day. All of those will be coming […]

The trip is winding down and coming to an end with today being the last day of snowboarding before traveling back to Colorado. This trip hasn’t been about the nightlife, but just enjoying friends company and snowboarding together. Today we were up early, to pack our gear up and get out of the condo for a day of riding. Evo and Shayboarder stickering up the mountain [singlepic id=5383 w=400 h=300 float=] I hit up the mountain with Mike, Kendra and BJ to hit up the demos and try out boards again. Today I rode the Bataleon Riot and Drake DF One. All of the boards plus others will be coming up in reviews soon. I come to Telus Festival to ride the demo days, unlike other demo days they tend to be shorter and I end up taking the boards for only 2 runs each because of the lack of time and length it takes to get each one done. I was hoping to ride a Burton as the third board today, but the reps closed it off at noon and my monster jacket was not winning them over.
Since the Grenade Games Superpipe Finals didn’t start till noon, I hit up the mountain to get to the on-snow demos going on at Whistler Mountain for the morning. Here’s my write up on the Grenade Games Superpipe Finals [singlepic id=5494 w=400 h=300 float=] The perk of being on the mountain early was I got to enjoy the Peak to Peak gondola alone, which was interesting having to entertain myself. Some of that downtime made it in my Superpipe video at the very end. Whistler Mountain has the on-snow demos going on for the next 3 days. I love demo days and especially when it means I can try other companies. On snow today was Salomon, Technine, Ride, Burton, Stepchild and Capita/Union. Hopefully there will be more tomorrow, but if not I have some boards on my list to try out. [singlepic id=5495 w=400 h=300 float=] Today I tried the Stepchild Chi Borg, their new reverse camber and a good ride everywhere reverse camber. I spent the morning riding that making laps by myself and then headed back to Blackcomb Mountain to watch the Grenade Games Superpipe Finals.
I can look at boards all day during SIA but I really judge them when I take them on snow to see how they ride. I made the trek down to Keystone to spend 3 full days on snow so I could ride the 2009-2010 gear. I stayed at Keystone in a condo with a couple others (big thanks to Gags), supplied the Miller High Life and enjoyed fun times off the snow. This year I concentrated mostly on boards with the exception of getting on a couple bindings. It made it a lot easier to dial in the boards and what I was feeling on each one. I didn’t rush this year either, I rode with friends and had fun doing the demo’s, seeing what each other rode. It was a total of 3 days on the same runs, through varying conditions as it changed from snow packed to hard packed to icy packed groomers. I went through 20 snowboards and 11 bindings at the final count. There will be more as well, I’ll continue to borrow some demo boards so I can really take the time to review them. Here’s the video for day 3 of demos, today was just trying out a couple boards and having fun with friends while riding them. Rocky Mountain On-Snow 2009 Demo Day 3 from Shayboarder on Vimeo. I spent the first couple runs with Dan and Jay who were able to get away from the Lib tent. It was becoming a beautiful day, still cold but at least the sun was out and fun to ride the mountain with. My early morning was spent on the Park Pickle which was requested a couple times and glad I finally got on it because it was good. Real men wear pink pants K and myself taking a break Boards I rode today were: -GNU Park Pickle with Union Forces -GNU B-pro with Union Forces -Rossignol Angus with Union Forces -O-matic Extr-eco with Union Forces -Flow Era with NXT-AT’s -Rome Pusher with Rome United’s and Rome Madisons We ended the day on a high note, enjoying a cold beer in the sun.
