While Loveland and A-Basin raced to open and started turning lifts in October, I’ve been busy preparing and waiting for the Opening of Keystone in Colorado. Yesterday we got to sample the goods before the public did which was a great start to the season and today I was on the mountain working to capture the Opening Day experience through social media. Thanks to a coffee on the way to work, I was wide awake at 6am and ready to start the season. By 7:30 when the crowd started growing, it was time to head outside. We had compiled a couple swag giveaways including a GoPro prize to hang out to the early birds in line. The morning crowd was great, really stoked and it was fun taking pics of everyone and throwing out goodies. We had a ceremony to welcome the Bergman family and honored them with their own Bergman gondola (#2 on the line). Last year was the Dercum gondola and this year was the Bergman’s. Both of them are a huge part of Keystone’s history. After many people got their first turns, it was time to head up and get in my lap for the day. I […]

A couple years ago, I would have chosen snowboarding over my family. I was younger and needed the freedom to be away, make my own decisions and follow my own path. As I’ve grown older and experienced the freedom, it has pushed me closer to my family and was part of the reason I was ready to move to California. Now within a couple hours of driving I can spend the holidays with them or just a weekend every now and then. A couple months ago I was told that my grandparents 60th wedding anniversary would be a family gathering and I needed to be there. The downside was their anniversary fell on Mammoth’s Opening Weekend. Instead of the weekend snowboarding, partying and working – I’ll be spending it with both sets of parents, grandparents, sibling, cousins and more. I’m making sure to shred along the way to Northern California but I’m looking forward to being there for an important event. I will be in Mammoth for Opening Day today to document the experience, update Mammoth social media and do my normal job of copywriting throughout the day. If you are on the mountain, say hi and give me a […]

For many of us, our local mountains haven’t opened and we haven’t quite leaped into the full blown winter season yet. But it’s coming and it’ll be before you know it. If you were like me this year, you probably stored your gear away without thinking twice about it. But it’s time to bring your gear back, make sure your stuff is dialed and use this guide to get you ready for the 2011/12 season. Wax your board Take a look at your board base, if it has a coat of wax on it then you stored it properly. If it doesn’t and looks dry, then it needs wax. Don’t punish your board any longer. Whether you drop it off at your local shop or wax it yourself at home with the iron, give it a good lookover because you don’t want to be the person on Opening Day who is sticking to the ground and can’t enjoy the snow. [singlepic id=10240 w=300 h=533 float=] Check your socks! You’d be surprised how quickly your socks show wear and tear especially if you wear your snowboard socks all season long (I know I do). Grab your socks and take a peak. […]

The day has finally arrived! I love opening days, it’s when the die-hards come out to play after waiting so long and it’s a great way to start the season being around people stoked on snow as much as you are. Today was no different except that it was my first time being able to ride Mammoth and be a part of something totally fun at a new mountain. Arriving at Mammoth at 6:45am [singlepic id=10133 w=500 h=281 float=] I work for Mammoth marketing which meant an early day to work, getting ready and helping out with opening day. It’s been rad to become part of this team and a new position that I can learn a lot from. It also meant being outside to watch the opening and first chair go up, capturing the moments and having fun. The marketing team getting ready for some camera time this morning [singlepic id=10134 w=500 h=281 float=] The Arbor guys who came out for first chair slept overnight in tents at the chairlift. That’s pretty die-hard and they were totally stoked the next morning (despite the cats walking them up and moving them).
Finally my home mountain is open! It’s Scholarship Day for Steamboat, so season passes aren’t good till tomorrow but by purchasing a $20 lift ticket the money goes to Winter Sports Club.I caught a couple photos this morning but managed to take a ride break on my lunch to get out and enjoy the snow conditions. Jakub’s 180 It hasn’t snowed in Steamboat so it really is a lot of man-made snow to get the mountain up and running for opening day. It’s supposed to snow tomorrow, so hopefully Turky Day will be a great day! myself on Christie Peak Express…little bit of dirt still here So on the terrain park front of news….the terrain park will be better than last year! The mountain has been listening to riders and skiers this year on the terrain park. I am really happy with the changes I have been hearing about the terrain park this year. There is a mini-park set up on headwall So one of the steps this summer was getting a new logo for Steamboat’s terrain park. My buddy Steve at the sign shop helped create and design the logo. Rather than have rails with tons of various colors, […]

I wasn’t expecting to ride two mountains for opening day and when it came down to it, it was like well why not? I spent the morning at A-basin and the afternoon at Loveland…giving full equal share to both mountains on opening day. I did a brief write-up for Transworld Business with more pictures, some not seen here. It turned out to be a beautiful sunny day in Colorado I arrived at A-Basin by 8am, a half hour before the first chair and surprisingly was in the 2nd row of the parking lot. The early morning wasn’t that busy on the mountain. I joined up with Lauren and Adrian on the mountain. The line waiting at 8:15am Right in front of this chair is the tv camera crews, photographers and everyone waiting to capture the moment on film. I chose to be in line waiting to get first turns and capture the first chair from there. Our crew for the day…myself, Adrian and Lauren The day turned out to be a great day. Hard packed groomers turned into choppy conditions as the day went on. The park was empty in the early am and then turned into the busy area […]
