Snowstorms can be great but it’s easy to forget how powerful they can become. Saturday was the prime example of a snowstorm getting worse throughout the day. By the time I made it to the mountain, I knew that Roxy Chicken Jam was cancelled due to weather but I figured that I’d still take a couple laps instead of curling up inside all day. I had wanted to meet up with friends in town for RCJ, so I hit up the mountain with Nicole from the Denver Mervin/Quik office, Nikki and her husband Seth and Trotter for a couple laps. It really ended up being a couple laps with the high winds, low visibility and lifts shutting down. Here’s Nicole getting in some powder in the trees [singlepic id=11220 w=500 h=334 float=] Absolutely high winds and sketchy visibility [singlepic id=11221 w=500 h=334 float=] Seth carving up the mountain [singlepic id=11222 w=500 h=334 float=] Seth and Trotter as we made our way to chair 9 lift line. I ended up getting stuck soon after and had to dig myself out but managed just fine.
After the recent storms, the sun finally emerged in Mammoth but it was deceivingly not warm out. Quite the opposite, the winds were blowing hard with the anticipation of the next storm system’s arrival. It was a good day to keep completely covered up on the slopes with no skin showing. I headed out early to get in my turns for the day. The reports said 27-44 inches in the past 48 hours and it was definitely deep in spots on the mountain. Even with riding the hovercraft, it was deep. Terrain to myself and the hovercraft to enjoy it! [singlepic id=11178 w=400 h=650 float=] Looking back and seeing this! [singlepic id=11179 w=400 h=650 float=] Ashley finding some blower spots on the mountain [singlepic id=11174 w=500 h=334 float=] Today was getting in some powder footage for the Mammoth web videos. I took the left line in this photo and here’s Ashley getting the right line of fresh tracks. [singlepic id=11175 w=500 h=334 float=] It was pretty fun to see how much snow is really on the mountain. Here’s one of the trail signs, not much longer till its buried!
The amount of snowfall in Mammoth this winter has been insanely good. Town is buried in snowbanks, 4wd has been a necessity and powder days are a plenty! Today was no exception, 32-50 inches in the past 24 hours on top of all the recent feet of snow we got. I borrowed the Jones Hovercraft for the day, finally getting the chance to ride it in some deep powder. I’ve said it before but when I get to ride boards in the worst conditions they aren’t meant for and they perform good, you know in the best conditions they’ll perform even better. The hovercraft was exactly that, handled on the hardpacked Winter Park day and was charging in the deep powder at Mammoth. Myself on the Hovercraft [singlepic id=11170 w=500 h=334 float=] Getting deep with the hovercraft [singlepic id=11171 w=500 h=334 float=] I headed out with Ashley for powder turns, we ended up taking two cameras. Gopro mounted to a pole and chest mount with a flip cam to get some footy. I’ll be able to include footy in the hovercraft review when I update it!
It’s hard to believe its only November when the entire mountain is open and it seems like every week there is a new storm arriving delivering up another powder day to be enjoyed. Last night was the Standard Films “Stormin” premiere in Mammoth so we rallied some people, hit up the film and partied afterwards in the village. It was a fun night but also meant a late start today for me. Luckily I like lazy sundays when you get to the slopes just as everyone is heading out of town and parking is one row from the chairlift. I finally got the chance to shred with Pat Stahl which worked out perfectly so we could meet up and get in some turns with his friends from the USC house. For the first couple laps Pat was snowboarding but then switched it up to skis (and switched outerwear too). [singlepic id=10229 w=500 h=281 float=] Pat totally has skiing down…even the moves [singlepic id=10228 w=300 h=404 float=] The first lap we headed up the gondola to get in some turns up top. Dropped into Climax to warm up the legs and then ended up heading over the backside of the mountain […]

I spent Thanksgiving morning in Mammoth getting in some last minute work before the holiday began and to say thanks on the slopes for having a mountain like Mammoth in my backyard now. It was also a couple laps to get another day on the Arbor Eden which I’ll be reviewing soon so wanted to just ride it again with more runs on it. I thought Colorado was sunny until I moved to Mammoth. It’s sunny whenever it’s not snowing and I like the sun so it’s been great on the mountain. [singlepic id=10217 w=500 h=281 float=] Woolly the Mammoth mascot out getting high fives and hugs from guests of all ages. It’s pretty fun to see adults get stoked on woolly. [singlepic id=10215 w=300 h=533 float=] After a couple laps by myself, I ran into Daniel and his friends so ended up getting in a couple laps with them through the park. Since my last crash, I’ve been just freeriding and not going to try anything yet. But soon I will.
The recent storm that swooped on Mammoth delivered 5-8 feet of snow, feet! It’s been a total blizzard on the mountain the last couple days but today the sun finally came out. The mountain also opened up all the lodges which means full operation and a chance to tour the rest of the mountain with the new snowfall. I headed out with Alex for our lunch break ride session. The bluebird skies and new snow meant a great break for some powder riding and to check out the mountain. [singlepic id=10205 w=300 h=452 float=] Alex and myself on the chairlift [singlepic id=10208 w=500 h=281 float=] Since the recent snowfall I’ve been riding my powder board, the NS Raptor which has been awesome in the new snow but also fun on the groomers. I need to get on the production version to review this winter since mine is more custom with the summit graphic and softer flex.
The storm that was predicted to drop feet of snow in Mammoth definitely held up its end of the bargain. Yesterday we had over a foot of new snow and today there was at least 2 feet of new snow. It was amazing to say the least, I forgot just how snow the west coast can dump on the mountains in such a short amount of time. I was up early at 6:30 and at work at Main Lodge by 7am. It worked out perfectly to take a couple laps and get some shots for the Mammoth Facebook Page when the mountain opened early before 8:30am. [singlepic id=10192 w=500 h=281 float=] The conditions were amazing but also kind of rough. It was low visibility which meant just pointing it and the snow was deep! It was so deep that you could get stuck easily if you lost speed. I found myself in knee to waist deep spots where I had to really maneuver or find another track to keep going. But the powder was good…very good! [singlepic id=10195 w=500 h=281 float=] Venturing past the wall to get to the wall on the mountain and duck into some more powder turns. […]

It was like Christmas for snowboarders. When I went to bed last night there was a bit of dusting on the ground but when I woke up, I found a foot of snow on my truck and knee deep on the ground in town. The mountain was sure to be more than that so I dragged my sick self out of bed (sorry powder is a cure for the cold), waxed up the powder board and headed to Main Lodge at Mammoth. My truck this morning when I wiped off some snow [singlepic id=10190 w=500 h=281 float=] The best part of today was the minimal crowds on chair #1. I skated into the singles line and headed straight up to get my first in for the day. I sit next to Ashley the snow reporter and since she gets in early every morning, she was my first text to find out how deep it really was. She said 1-2ft so pow board it was. After that, I texted a couple friends Daniel and Jeremy to see when they would be up.
