Years ago, I used to live in a quaint mountain town called Steamboat Springs, Colorado where I’d spend every day riding the local mountain. Even though it’s been over 10 years since I called Steamboat home, it’s one of my favorite places to visit because it holds a special spot near and dear to my heart. There’s still the favorite stashes, the local watering holes, and the amazing people who make up the community around the mountain. I’m lucky to return to my old stomping grounds at least once a year. Thanks to the direct flight from Seattle to Hayden, it was a 2 hour flight and 45 minute drive before we were slopeside at Steamboat Resort. We even enjoy a First Class upgrade on the way out. We arrived in the evening but that meant we’d be fully charged to hit the slopes the next day. It’s been a good year for Steamboat with the town receiving over 230″ of snowfall so far. It looked like we might be lucky with our trip and a storm rolling through but it shifted course on our last day in town. Even while there was no new snow, we did manage to […]

Finally the snow came back to Colorado! I left work on Saturday when it was puking snow and knew that we’d be having a powder day on Sunday which meant early to bed, early to rise! I was in the office at 6am to get snow photos and on the gondola by 7:30 to head up top for more snow photos. The top photo is the calm before the storm. Usually I take photos of other skiers and riders but I ended up becoming the snowboard model and got to make a couple powder turns of my own down Jackwacker (the only ungroomed run that morning). It was good, definitely good to be back floating on snow again. Lately I’ve been back on my Never Summer Lotus (which will be reviewed soon). It’s generally my board of choice for most mountain riding so it’s been good to test it back out on some new snow and a mix of groomers to easier park features. I like to call myself the unisex snowboard model. I noticed it back in Mammoth but in pictures of me you can’t really tell if I’m a girl or a guy. Either way I like to […]

It’s been a stormy week for the Northwest. Lots of rain in town and snow in the mountains. Stevens Pass has been getting snowfall that kept delivering powder days on the mountain. I waited for Erik to start the day on the slopes we could carpool up together. Even by the time we arrived in the early afternoon, there was still powder in spots and turns to be made. The best part about Friday snowboarding was the sun came out! I’m still getting used to the Northwest weather and definitely miss those bluebird sunny days after a powder storm. But today it was almost bluebird as the temps warmed up in the afternoon. The snow was a bit heavier than a couple days ago and required some effort to not get stuck or wipeout. I know, cause I took a good fall when I ended up leaving the snow track in a flat spot. It’s finally the weekend which means busier slopes and a chance for me to escape to the Washington coast for a couple days. Looking forward to hanging out on the sand and being out of the snow.

There are good days and then there are great days. The past two days in Tahoe have been great days, the snow finally arrived and delivered amazing powder runs. I couldn’t believe how quickly the conditions changed on the mountain and just in time for my last day in Tahoe. After dropping off my rental car in South Lake, we headed up to Northstar for the day. Yesterday was about powder on the groomers and today was about powder in the trees. There were risks underneath the snow with trees, branches, rocks…but the reward was worth it and picking your line while watching the snow for bumps was everything. Most of these pics were taken after 11am on the mountain, definitely a lot of snow for everyone to enjoy all day long. Today’s conditions were epic. The snow was light and fluffy, the coverage was getting filled in and the backside of the mountain was ideal. I had only ridden these runs earlier this season on the groomers and now could get a good feel for the wide open to tree runs that they offered up. It’s hard to capture the happiness that comes with riding powder but today I […]

I forgot how much I missed snowbanks until I drove up to Stevens Pass, parked the truck and realized that the looming height of them was back in my life. The northwest has gotten most of the storms in the US, riding powder while the rest of us were riding parks and groomers. So far Stevens Pass, Washington has an 84″ snow base at the bottom and 102″ at the top. The flakes were starting to really come down on the walk to the lodge. It was a quiet Thursday on the mountain, there were more cars in the lot than I expected but for some reason the mountain seemed empty. I guess everyone found their own spots to ride all day. It felt good to be home but also an awakening that I am back in the northwest where it’s tougher riding with wetter snow. Northwest breeds good riders; the variety of conditions, the heavy snow and the fact that some days you’ll get soaked…it’s not for everyone but it’s fun. Today I went up to the mountain to get reacquainted with my old stomping grounds. Since there was new snow on the ground, I skipped the park and […]

Over the last couple days Mammoth has turned into a full blown winter paradise despite the fact that it’s May! In fact the mountain looks just like it did this winter, nothing has changed and it’s frozen in winter time. This morning started out with sunshine and powder, it took a while for the top to open but that meant good things for me. I waited patiently, getting work done and finally when I heard it was a go, grabbed my co-worker Lauren for a top to bottom shred break. The Mammoth Mountain sign on top is finally buried (but it’ll be dug out again). That sign is 18 feet high I believe. We ended up standing at the top of the gondola and dropping into climax just off the gondola. As soon as we dropped in, it was very clear that the 8.5 inches in the past 24 hours was underestimated. It was deep, fluffy and damn good powder turns even with some choppy spots. We traversed over closer to Dave’s and got some good turns in before heading down along chair 5 liftline. [singlepic id=11681 w=500 h=334 float=] I love when photos look like this, powder! [singlepic id=11682 […]

Snowstorms can be great but it’s easy to forget how powerful they can become. Saturday was the prime example of a snowstorm getting worse throughout the day. By the time I made it to the mountain, I knew that Roxy Chicken Jam was cancelled due to weather but I figured that I’d still take a couple laps instead of curling up inside all day. I had wanted to meet up with friends in town for RCJ, so I hit up the mountain with Nicole from the Denver Mervin/Quik office, Nikki and her husband Seth and Trotter for a couple laps. It really ended up being a couple laps with the high winds, low visibility and lifts shutting down.
After the recent storms, the sun finally emerged in Mammoth but it was deceivingly not warm out. Quite the opposite, the winds were blowing hard with the anticipation of the next storm system’s arrival. It was a good day to keep completely covered up on the slopes with no skin showing. I headed out early to get in my turns for the day. The reports said 27-44 inches in the past 48 hours and it was definitely deep in spots on the mountain. Even with riding the hovercraft, it was deep.
The amount of snowfall in Mammoth this winter has been insanely good. Town is buried in snowbanks, 4wd has been a necessity and powder days are a plenty! Today was no exception, 32-50 inches in the past 24 hours on top of all the recent feet of snow we got. I borrowed the Jones Hovercraft for the day, finally getting the chance to ride it in some deep powder. I’ve said it before but when I get to ride boards in the worst conditions they aren’t meant for and they perform good, you know in the best conditions they’ll perform even better. The hovercraft was exactly that, handled on the hardpacked Winter Park day and was charging in the deep powder at Mammoth. Despite avy control and weather delays, June was ideal for the day with no lines and fresh powder. The steep terrain and trees on the face was exactly what we wanted and the powder was deep! I love Mammoth but definitely enjoy the quietness and solitude of June.
