This has been one interesting season for conditions on the mountain, there’s no guarantee to what the weather or snow will be like until you get up on the slopes. Today was a really slow snow day on lower mountain, almost warm but not fully bluebird out and really hard to judge speed in spots, too much or too little. I still can’t believe it’s already day 90 of the season, it’s insane how quickly it passes. [singlepic id=8621 w=400 h=300 float=] I met up with a bunch of the instructor guys to lap Rabbit Ears and Maverick’s for my ride break. The guys worked on the jump line getting some filming in and I worked on the rail line, then headed over to the superpipe to try that out. [singlepic id=8622 w=400 h=300 float=] The nice thing about late season is park laps are almost empty except for running into friends and other locals. It’s just nice and quiet on the mountain especially on gondola closure days. [singlepic id=8623 w=400 h=300 float=] I found the pipe pretty fun today, took a couple laps through and even though the rest of the snow in Rabbit Ears was slow the pipe […]

The snow has been falling in Steamboat finally! We’ve received some new snow to help with the lack of snow this season but today with my limited ride time I just headed to the park and convinced Chris to join in. We haven’t been able to ride together in such a long time that I just wanted to ride with him, get feedback and lap park which for some reason is all I’ve been interested in lately. I’ve progressed to the medium terrain park at Steamboat and getting comfortable on the rails and boxes. I need to start stepping up my game but I’m also enjoying progressing slowly too. Chris got a shot of me today on the flat down box that I’ve been working on, now each time I can ride it to the end so I’m stoked! [singlepic id=8204 w=300 h=400 float=] We took a lap through the pipe which was the mistake of the day, it was powder and sheet ice underneath plus it wasn’t groomed so super sketchy with the flat light conditions. Chris’ brother Tracy still rallied it through it despite the conditions [singlepic id=8203 w=300 h=400 float=] So my butt is bruised and hurts […]

It was another warm sunny slushy day on the mountain so I took my morning to run errands in town before heading up to the slopes. The park was calling my name and even though I was riding alone, I wanted to step up my riding today. I was lucky to catch up with Sonny for some laps in the afternoon and he helped cheer me on through my park lap improvement progression session. [singlepic id=8139 w=400 h=300 float=] I’m still working on my tricks in the beginner park but it’s difficult because the boxes are short so once you are on…two seconds later…you are off the box. But it helps with confidence and I’m getting a lot more comfortable in the park. Testing the Spy Bias goggles today, perfect lens for bluebird [singlepic id=8137 w=400 h=300 float=] Today I spent more runs lapping our medium park (Rabbit Ears Terrain Park) which has a rail line that is flat box, flat down box, rainbow box, up rail, down rail and log features at the end. My goal was to ride more features in this park. Here’s some of the features I was hitting (but the pics are older).
It’s hard to imagine that winter is almost over, March has arrived which is my favorite month of winter but also means there are less days on the slopes soon. I’ve had an amazing winter so far and today everything felt good, cranked the music, lapped the mountain in the early morning and then was able to lap park with Claire. Snowboarding is addicting, cause I was wanting more this afternoon. This morning I was able to ride from 9-11 to do the Steamboat straight talk, it’s basically the conditions of the day blog post for the mountain and a lot of fun plus it gets me out on the slopes. The sun was out, temps were warmer and I was testing out the new Chemical Storm snowboard. [singlepic id=8087 w=300 h=400 float=] The fun part about testing or even reviewing is just being able to get used to a board, ride it and see how it handles in as much different conditions as I possibly can. Today’s conditions were corduroy groomers, bumpy choppy snow, leftover pow, park and pipe. After a typical run, it’s time to see how it handles easy turns, harder aggressive turns, quick stops, short and […]

This week was definitely working for the weekend and when the weekend arrived, it was much-needed time to shred! With Mike in town we were finally able to take laps together and since he spent the last two days freeriding the mountain, we opted for a park day today. Say hi to Mike…he’s the behind the scenes help [singlepic id=7447 w=400 h=300 float=] We ended up lapping Maverick’s pipe or Rabbit Ears Park and then hitting up the Lil’ Rodeo smaller park on the way down to Christie chairlift. With the mountain busy because of MLK weekend, lapping park wasn’t that busy and a perfect day to work on the park/pipe skills. [singlepic id=7448 w=400 h=300 float=] I had some good runs and bad runs today, ended up slamming off the tire bonk but it was fun trying and definitely my first hard slam this season…of course it was to my stomach not my head. I worked on my switch riding outside of the park and especially riding switch on cat tracks. But pipe felt better when I slowed down and really concentrated on my heelside wall and Lil’ Rodeo is always fun for riding through.
Mike arrived in town yesterday so he hit up the slopes today but by the time I made it out for my ride break it was the end of the day for him so we missed making turns together. I ended up lapping park/superpipe with Tracy and Becca for the afternoon…perfect girls day to shred and have fun. [singlepic id=7437 w=400 h=300 float=] I’ve been working at trying to air out of the pipe, at Windell’s over the summer I had it but now back in Steamboat I almost have it. I still just love riding halfpipe and it was great to make laps with the girls who are up for also riding halfpipe. Today Larry Pierce was up taking photos and he got a shot of me in the pipe which is rad, I won’t ever go as big as other riders but I’m stoked! I’m still riding the sierrascope to get the review done for it before I make the switch to my lotus. [singlepic id=7439 w=400 h=300 float=] During the not-so-great snow year’s, having a good park matters. This is that year here in Steamboat, it’s not a powder year so far and we’re definitely shredding […]

It’s the calm before the storm in Steamboat, the final last breath before the tourists arrive on their vacations. As much as I appreciate tourists (because of them I have a job and live where I live) I appreciate the quietness before it gets crazy. Today was that day, quiet on the mountain and mellow park laps to enjoy it. I made runs with Chris from snowboarderguide and Bec who runs our Ski School. We made our way to the newly done Rabbit Ears Terrain Park, it’s our medium size park on the mountain and this year is the best I’ve seen it. Rails on the right side, jump line on the left. Bonk features at the bottom. [singlepic id=7090 w=400 h=300 float=] I can now hit two of the features in the park. The first flat box that Chris is riding here and a bonk log at the bottom. [singlepic id=7085 w=400 h=300 float=] My goal is this box, flat down, that I’d like to try out soon [singlepic id=7089 w=400 h=300 float=] Chris on one of the skate style rails set up [singlepic id=7087 w=400 h=300 float=] The mountain is snowmaking to build up the Lil’ Rodeo Terrain […]
