The past couple years I’ve spent Thanksgiving in the mountains away from family in the company of friends. This year I’m happy to say that I’ll be joining family in North Tahoe for Thanksgiving Dinner and spending Black Friday on the slopes with family. When I was considering moving to California, one of the highlights was being closer to my family who is mixed between Washington and California. After so many years of being away during the holidays, I get to enjoy a Thanksgiving with my brother and sister-in-law’s family plus spend a day with them on the slopes. I haven’t been on the slopes with my brother since we were kids. [singlepic id=10213 w=500 h=281 float=] Thanksgiving is a day to say thanks. I am so thankful for friends and family who support me and all my readers who tune in to shayboarder.com. I’m very lucky to live this mountain lifestyle, work for a company that I’m stoked on and have some amazing co-workers. Its been a transition to move to California but I’m so happy to be here, trying something new and learning a lot in the process. Of course the recent snowfall of 5-8 feet makes me […]

Three years ago I made a decision that would forever change my life. I left my home state of Washington and moved to Colorado. It feels like forever ago that I moved and have adapted to resort town living. Resort town living is not for everyone, it’s a lifestyle that can bring out the best or worst in people. What’s important is to find a place that works for you, that gives you a fun environment to live in and see if you enjoy it. [singlepic id=5093 w=320 h=240 float=] The unknown is scary, moving away from your friends and family to a place where you know few people is tough. When I packed up my life in Washington, I was moving to Colorado without a place to live, without a job and in debt to make the move. Within a month I had all of those, the place to live came first and then the job and the debt eventually went away. That’s not to say that the first year wasn’t tough because it was but a lot of it was transitioning and moving on. By moving to a resort town, I happened to find friends who share the […]

I moved to the resort town for the snowboarding, everything else came with it. The people who come here on vacations, pay for the jobs and opportunities. Without them, we wouldn’t have new roads or new chairlifts. It’s a double edged sword, because it’s a resort town…it’s not cheap either. You pay a price to live here, while I live within walking distance to the slopes, I also pay higher prices in food, gas, everyday luxuries. Even my Starbucks costs more and that is dependent upon which location I buy it. You learn that with your minimal income, to find other ways to hook each other up. One of the perks is the art of trading. In a resort town, you know which shop guys drink what beer or liquor to get a quick wax job or fix up job on a rock gash. I needed to have my truck looked at twice last month, instead of paying labor for a new friend to check it out I paid in beer. And I hooked up his boss with discount tickets to the mountain. For my new website, I have a friend helping me with the creation of it doing a […]

I have been working in the resort industry since I was 15 and I have learned that having holidays off are rare, quite frankly you only get them off when the weather doesn’t cooperate with opening dates. Back in Washington, I used to work the holidays and then drive to spend dinner with family. I never had the day off. When I moved to Colorado 3 seasons ago, I found that I didn’t mind not leaving town or having to work on the holidays. Why travel for 3 days when you can spend time with friends to eat dinner and spend time on the slopes? This Thanksgiving I’m here in Steamboat, I’ll spend the morning working because when the office is empty, you can accomplish more work quicker and then when I feel like it, I’ll go out snowboarding to enjoy the holiday and come home to friends at my house for dinner tonight. Resort towns are tough sometimes, for some people it’s hard to be away from their family especially during holidays…for others like me, you find friends who come into your life and become your family. I really give thanks to snowboarding because it brings together people from […]

Industry Profile: Stevens Pass RTP Administrator Dennis Kelly Shay: So tell us about yourself? Dennis: My name is Dennis Kelly. I have many monikers but most of my friends call me Denno. I’m 31 years old, and I moved our West only 3 years ago to live in the mountains. I’m passionate about my life, work, family, the mountains and environment, snowboarding and the resort/snowboard industry. I live, ride, and work at Stevens Pass in Washington. Shay: What is your job title? Dennis: RTP Administrator for Stevens Pass. Shay: Did your parents question your job choice? Dennis: My dad questioned my decision to move to the mountains because I didn’t have a career opportunity lined up at first, and I would be giving up one in the process. I think he just wanted to make sure it was really what I wanted because I was choosing more than just a job, but also a new lifestyle. Both parents have always been supportive though. Shay: What was your first set up? Dennis: Burton Custom with Burton Mission bindings. It only lasted a month because it was such a tank. The salesperson had me buy a board only based on my height, […]

Today I turned a ripe age of 25 years old. Living in a resort town means that birthdays are celebrated not with families but with friends you’ve made. Two years ago I moved to Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Back in Washington I would always spend birthdays with family and since moving here, I’ve found that my friends have become my family. It’s quite amazing that one town and one sport will bring people together from different places. I’ve found that my closest friends here in Steamboat come from such a range of locations: Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Colorado, New Jersey, Minnesota, New York and my best friend comes from Germany. This upcoming 08-09 season will be my 14th season on the mountain and my 3rd season in Steamboat Springs. I am very lucky to live where I live, to be happy and have friends that share the same passion as I do.
