In 2008 I saw a report from SIA that mentioned product reviews being a valuable asset for consumers and it’s been no doubt that since then product reviews continue to be a popular choice for consumers before buying products. For shayboarder.com, reviews are hands down the most popular content I produce. The reviews page is the second highest page for traffic after the homepage and consistently brings back hits on google when people look up direct reviews for products. I’m not one to say I started anything but it’s rad to see that a snowboard blogger could start producing reviews and see other blogs follow in the example I first set. Now you can find reviews from many other snowboarders around the world, giving you the chance to encounter multiple reviews from multiple sources. For a while I’ve wanted to do a post on the reviews that I publish so that people have a better understanding of what goes into each review, how boards get chosen and any grey areas that people might think…can now be addressed. Here’s some questions I’ve seen over the years about my reviews that I’m going to compile and answer for everyone.
It’s that time of year for your input on the upcoming reviews for the 2009-2010 season! With temperatures dropping and snow on the way, that means it’s another season of reviews approaching. I need your input on what boards/bindings to ride and review this season, what boards don’t have reviews, what gear you want to know more about and what I should ride this season? [singlepic id=5495 w=400 h=300 float=] So far for 2009-2010, I have ridden 43 snowboards that are in the review list here and the 09-10 season hasn’t even started so that means I have a lot more time to ride more 09-10 snowboards. There’s still a couple 09-10 reviews on the way. I welcome all responses for all types of boards/bindings, the most popular requested gear will go to the top of the list and this list will be in my pocket all season as I cross it off and write up a review on it. I understand that online reviews are hard to come by, some companies/models are even harder to find reviews on which is why I want your input on what you want to be reviewed. The demo season in CO starts […]

This review will be updated throughout the season as I demo and test more 08/09 snowboards. Each review is judged by the same standard and for the majority of reviews I used my own boots (some exceptions). During demos I try to stick to riding the same size board of 157-159cm with the exception of some female boards which come in smaller sizes. I have the weight to back up riding a men’s board, however I do try to ride women’s boards in the longer lengths. About me as a snowboarder: I’m coming up on my 15th season snowboarding. I am a freerider (I ride trees, powder, steeps, groomers, natural terrain) and I ride halfpipe. I am 5’6″ and typically ride a 158cm for my all mountain board, my powder board is a 161 or 164cm and my park board is a 155cm. I weigh about 200lbs give or take. I am a regular rider with a 22 inch width, +15, -15 stance angles. I wear size 8 womens snowboard boots. My opinion is only my opinion…of how these snowboards rode. Take it as you want. To see more reviews, head to the review section. 2008-2009 Snowboard Review This list […]

So I am in the process of adding a section to the snowboard reviews called “Shay’s Honesty Box” which will have the really honest opinion, including whether I would buy it or not and the dirt that people want to hear in a review. You guys asked for it and I am delivering it. I added little bits to the 08-09 reviews and future reviews will have more. For the real 08-09 snowboard reviews, check back next week…I’ll be putting up the entire list that will be the real reviews…not the rant reviews. I’ve always been one of those people that recognizes that I might hate a board or binding…but others love it. That conditions impact how a board handles and every board can have a bad day. As a rider I have bad days…towards the end of season my own riding is weaker, I just wanna take it easy and have fun…versus riding a board that’s going to haul and make me work for it. I try to save the hard charging boards for the early season and the easy, fun mellow rides for the end of season. So for those wanting the really uncensored Shay’s take, here it […]

Around this time of year I start making the list of boards I hope to ride for the upcoming season, what boards have rarely any reviews, and what boards people want to know more about, what bindings to try out? This year I want to ask the readers, what would snowboards do you want to see me ride and hear my input on? This is your chance to make it known if you want a specific model to be reviewed or me to try to get on a board that’s harder to get. I welcome all responses and this will help me make the review list for this year more suitable to my readers. Case in point, I had multiple requests from readers this summer about a Union Contact binding review and because of that, I made sure to borrow them from Capita to ride at Hood. I understand completely that online reviews are limited and some models/companies are harder to find reviews on…so that’s why I’m asking you guys for input. Keep in mind that I’ll be able to demo boards from November to March. Just remember I ride both men’s and women’s boards and bindings. I’ll be reviewing […]

I’ve owned 16 boards that I can remember…these are boards that I have bought or given to me for free. Boards I’ve owned from 95-00:This period of my life is when I was oblivious to anything I rode and really didn’t keep track either. I have some pictures but some photos I don’t have. It is funny to see the equipment that I started to learn to ride on compared to what you have now. Times have changed…but still riding. 1. Nitro No idea the model. Its the board in the middle, the blue Nitro. If anyone does know the model, please email me. This was really my first snowboard because I spent the most amount of time on it. It lasted me a couple seasons. 2. Ride board no idea what model. No pictures of this board at this time. 3. GNU Barrett Christy pro. No pictures of this board at this time. 4. Burton 5. Santa Cruz No idea the model even though I got the board in 2000. This board was great for developing with as a rider. It took me from intermediate to advanced riding and eventually got downgraded to my rock board. It was easy […]
