Since December 20th, nine lives have been lost in North America from snowboarding accidents. At least four of the deaths have been from riding in trees either from colliding with a tree or falling into a tree well. As beautiful as winter wilderness is to look at and fun to ride in; snow and trees can create a lethal combination on the mountain. I hope that everyone stays safe this winter and understands some basic knowledge about riding in trees and tree wells in hopes it could possibly help prevent more deaths. [singlepic id=10426 w=300 h=353 float=] Educate Yourself This website is an good resource for understanding tree wells and deep snow dangers. During the winter, a trees branches collect snow but also the lower branches create a well that surrounds the tree. This hole doesn’t fill with snow and when you get close enough, you can fall into that well that is deeper than you think. Our snowboards are attached to our feet which is good and bad, it’s bad if you fall headfirst into a treewell and can’t unstrap. The more you struggle, the more snow can pile around you from the branches and you can […]

The best thing about Steamboat is even if it’s a powder day and you aren’t able to get up in the morning, you can still find some in the afternoon to enjoy. My friend Erik from Summit County drove up for his first day at Steamboat so I told him where to go on the trail map and then was able to join him at 2pm to finish out the afternoon shredding. The sun also came out for the afternoon so it was the perfect powder day. [singlepic id=7986 w=320400 h=300 float=] Erik had rode the Pony Express trees which have some good aspens but I wanted him to get the full aspen tree feel by heading to the clocks and twilight area on the mountain. It was tracked out but still fun and got the legs working. [singlepic id=7983 w=320400 h=300 float=] At the bottom of Sundown we ended up running into Charlie who I knew from the Zumiez Buffalo Pass trip, we ended up finishing out the day taking laps with him and finding some good powder to end the day out on.
I love the days when I get the phone call from a friend saying it’s time to shred together. Today was that day, got the call from Philip and twenty minutes later we were hitting the slopes for my ride break. [singlepic id=7968 w=400 h=300 float=] Steamboat received a couple new inches which meant there was some good powder in the trees if you were willing to find it. The trees were beautiful today, we mostly stuck to the clock area and found spots where barely anyone had ridden. It was definitely off the beaten path for going into new trees today on each run. [singlepic id=7967 w=400 h=300 float=] Philip getting some pow in the trees [singlepic id=7969 w=400 h=300 float=] Philip was kind enough to take my camera and get some video of me riding in the trees, it’s short and sweet but fun! Powder in the trees from Shayboarder on Vimeo. Surprisingly some of the best most untouched snow was in the trees on lower mountain below the gondola, we found that out as we hit up the trees on the way down the mountain to end the ride break of fun. It’s still snowing so looks […]

It’s been a rough end of the week, so I took the last couple days to relax and chill. Today I did make it up to the mountain to take some laps with Steph and Tj who had driven up from Summit County to ride for the day. [singlepic id=5794 w=400 h=300 float=] I took them to my favorite chair, Pony to see what goods could be found. Today was Pony’s last operating day so bummed to see it’s being shut down with some good snow on it. Pony has some really fun natural terrain to ride and some great tree riding. It’s off the beaten path, which makes it great. TJ riding up onto a pillow [singlepic id=5795 w=400 h=300 float=] There was no missing our crew today, between my 686 monster jacket, Tj’s jussi jacket and Steph’s nikita face jacket…we were bright. [singlepic id=5796 w=400 h=300 float=] It’s been snowing on and off this week, even today there was leftover powder goods to be found in the trees. Definitely managed to get a couple powder turns in while just roaming around.
We enjoyed a late start to another sunny day in Utah, by the time we got up it was warm and soft snow on the mountain. We’ve been staying at Stephanie’s place which is right near Canyons so a quick walk to the gondola to head up the mountain. Here’s our mini video from today’s riding at CanyonsCanyons 3/14/09 from Shayboarder on Vimeo. Shayboarder.com hits up the Canyons gondola We met up with Ryan who I shared a room with at SIA and a couple of his friend to lap the park with. After a couple runs through the park, met up with Emily an old friend and one of the Industry Profiles to check out the rest of Canyons Resort. We found some fun runs in the trees along various runs. The last runs of the day on some chairs were the best runs. This chair offered up the fresh powder if you were willing to duck a rope into private property (next to a home) and watch out for Patrol. I made my lap away from the others and found the line I wanted. Far left is my line Oops another shayboarder.com sticker at the Canyons […]

Yesterday I was working on the new shayboarder.com so today I definitely needed to get out on the mountain. It was a girls day, just Stacia and I hit up the mountain. I put everything on video using the vholdr cam (which I’ll be reviewing soon) and one clip with my digital camera. Steamboat 1/11/09 from Shayboarder on Vimeo. We weren’t expecting much in terms of conditions since it hadn’t snowed in a couple days but it was snowing today on the mountain. There wasn’t that many people up today, so we headed over to Sunshine lift to play in the trees there. This was one of the first photos I took of Stacia and it was the photo of the day for Steamboat. So I’ve started to notice that in some areas of the mountain that people tend to stick to groomers. We found plenty of trees with powder turns and even mad some new turns on our own. Me coming out of the trees It was a little flat in spots but still plenty of new snow Stacia in a couple inches of fresh Stacia and I have a lot of fun together, lots of goofing around […]

Yesterday I watched it snow all day in Steamboat as I caught up on work. Today I knew I’d be able to ride the morning by doing a late start at work. In the last 24 hours it had snowed 16+ inches, reports said 16 inches…I heard 27 inches by the end of the day. Here’s the video from today’s riding with skiers. Steamboat 1/7/09 from Shayboarder on Vimeo. I headed to the mountain not knowing who would be around to ride with. Luckily ran into Andrew while changing into my boots and we met up with more friends in the line. Andrew, Loryn and Lauren (?) are all skiers, so I tried my best to keep up. I couldn’t believe how much snow there was, it didn’t seem like much at first until you went into the trees. It wasn’t the typical light Steamboat snow either, definitely worked you riding through it. I’m from Washington and I have now grown accustomed to riding in light fluffy snow versus the heavy wet snow. There were freshies around every corner, in every tree run just waiting for you today. Andrew grabbed some photos of me riding in the trees. If […]

When you least expect it, it’ll be a powder day. Last night I watched two friends DJ in town, left the bar at 1am where there was no new snow on the ground. When I woke up at 7am, I found that the good light fluffy snow had fallen on the ground. I rocked the vholdr cam again today, I think I have the angle dialed and it lasted all morning charged and plenty of room for filming. Unfortunately the lighting today was flat light and some of the video came out foggy. I came home with 17 clips of footage. Here’s the mini film I put together for today. Steamboat 1/3/09 from Shayboarder on Vimeo. The reason it was an early day was because I was a substitute for straight talk and photo of the day. I occasional take the photos when we need them but this was my first time straight talking for the mountain. Straight talkers get to wear the jacket, get up on the mountain early and write about conditions in a report that goes out. Here’s my write up for the mountain. The rad part is you get to take a friend who will […]

I met up with Dave (who I know from snowboard.com) and his brother Brian. His other brother had binding issues and went in on our first run. We started a warm up in the Three O’Clock trees off Sundown Express. That definitely got my legs back on the board and ready for more. Dave took the shot of me riding in the Aspens We rode back up Sundown but this time dropped into the Morningside area of the mountain. Morningside is a great area, but the downside is the flatness of the terrain. Combine that with pine trees, you have more of a chance of tree wells which are very dangerous. Anytime you ride trees, make sure you are riding with people and know the area. On the […]

Steamboat 12/20/08 from Shayboarder on Vimeo. It was a 5 inch powder day and looked bluebird but it was a very cold day on the mountain and goggles froze up during runs. The winds were howling most of the day and my riding really sucked…I crashed more in one day than I have all season. My friends K who I ride with in summit and Brian who I know from sierrasnowboard came up for the weekend. I was surprised at the crowds, it’s the holidays but its definitely not as busy as I thought it would be but that could have been the cold keeping them inside more than outside. K in the morning, first run to the base for shredding Saturday was the first day that Morningside was open, offering up some fresh powder that was deep and […]
