Today I was gonna make the drive to Copper and not deal with the real opening day at Steamboat. But when 8am came around…driving 2 hours would be a bit tiring plus getting over Rabbit Ears Pass would take longer with snow on the roads. I chose to sleep in and ride Steamboat later in the day. Woke up around 10:30, by 11:30 had walked to the mountain with my roommate Leo and rode down to the new Christie chair to begin our day. Shannon and Leo Going through midway station, you can see the cat track coming down to get to the base. The rest isn’t open yet.Met up with more friends on the mountain, no new terrain was open since yesterday so made turns on Thunderhead which had turned into skiers paradise of mogul fields and cat tracks. It wasn’t too crowded on the mountain which was nice, lift lines weren’t long at all. I think because the weather was overcast and a mixture of rain and snow in the afternoon…people stayed in. A storm rolled through during riding, visibility got worse but it was dumping snow!
After dealing with Copper lines yesterday…today was a shredding no line day at Loveland. My buddy Steve drove us down and thanks for the Daylight Saving time ending we managed to get there pretty early. We have fun! It was well worth riding Loveland since they opened Chair #2 which opened up a longer run and awesome for bombing runs. Another beautiful sunny bluebird day, towards the end of the day the winds picked up but it was pretty mellow throughout the day. It was the perfect day for bombing runs, riding rollers and enjoying the sun on the chairlift. Yesterday at Copper ski patrollers were waving people going fast down and today at Loveland everyone was bombing just having fun, staying in control. I even waved at Ski Patrol as I flew down the mountain. There were no lines, every time we rolled up to chair #2…we got on. Snow conditions were hardpacked and they were blowing snow on the closed runs so looks like more will open soon. Took a mid-day break to enjoy some beer and then got back to riding. Steve coming off a roller getting air I was pretty stoked because I started ollie’ing off […]

To enjoy my day off, I made my way down to A-Basin. I decided to do A-Basin over Loveland because it was a Monday (midweek so less crowds) and I wanted to get at least one day at A-Basin in before the season began here in Steamboat. Normally I spend the end of season at A-Basin when most people are tired of riding and the lines aren’t too bad and spring conditions. Today was just me going alone to ride. Not many of my friends have Mondays off and I do enjoy riding alone so I still made the trek down. Even for a Monday there were lines at A-Basin…definitely worse than a Saturday/Sunday at Loveland right now. Luckily for me I just caught the singles line which moved pretty quick and I got new people on the ride up each time. The terrain and riding was decent, they only have the one chair and two runs right now. The terrain park was packed as usual. Another bluebird day in summit county. I love the sun in Colorado…having grown up in Washington you don’t get enough sun so now I’m loving every second of it. I just spent the day […]

I have a 3 day weekend so I am taking full advantage of it. I am a snowboard bum. A very tired, busy snowboard bum. Even on a holiday weekend of parties and celebrating Halloween here in Steamboat (I was a naughty cop) I still managed to grab friends and ride Loveland both days this weekend. This required early morning Starbucks or Red Bull and riding on about 4-5 hours of sleep each night. Tonight I should get about 9 hours of sleep before I hit the road again for A-Basin riding tomorrow. SATURDAY I went out Friday night and closed out the bar in town but I still managed to drink lots of water and wake up at 8am to snowboard. So I grabbed my friend Pete to come ride Loveland. I didn’t really grab him, just stopped by his house, walked upstairs and woke him up telling him to come ride for the day. It worked and we made our way down to Loveland. It was the typical bluebird sunny day at Loveland which I love. The terrain wasn’t bad, it was hardpacked and it wasn’t groomed so a bit choppy throughout the day. It was a lot […]

Since Steamboat won’t be open till November 21st and the early snowboard season is only 2 hours away…the drive to ride is well worth it so any spare days off right now I am down in Summit County to ride. Woke up early today, packed up my gear, picked up my friend Steve in town and we headed down to Loveland to endure a Saturday riding day. Surprisingly it wasn’t busy at all for a Saturday and it was bluebird out most of the day. Windy when we arrived but as late morning came, had to shed some layers as it got warmer. It’s always fun to ride with new people, that’s one of my goals this year is to meet and ride with more riders. The only downside about early season weekend shredding is dodging the beginners that just got stoked on snowboarding and are sitting all over each run. It’s quite a skill to master having to dodge 5 flailing people who have no idea what they are doing. I give them credit for being stoked enough to enjoy the early season but when there is only one chairlift and the run isn’t that great for beginners…just wait […]
