It’s incredible to see the difference between last October living in California to this October living back in Colorado. The journey in-between the last year has been unexpected, the riding was amazing and I had one of those quality over quantity years. If there was one year to be in the Northwest and travel to the powder, it was last year and I definitely got my fix of amazingly good powder days. I went into 2012 with a lot of goals. I wished for an injury-free healthy season (and made it despite no health insurance). I wanted to expand my tricks (did not do that, no health insurance played a role). Overall I wanted to ride harder terrain and get into backcountry (check, Alaska. check, BC. check, avy 1 training). I ended up doing most of my traveling goals when I spent the whole season traveling, checking off the bucket list of items one after one. The avalanches of the past year and the lives lost have impacted many in the ski and snowboard community. Its impacted me. I now have a goal that I hope all my friends remain safe, that we truly live for the experiences and appreciate […]

Time flies when you are having fun! That’s certainly the case considering this winter will be my 18th season snowboarding (crazy huh!). Each year I try to progress my snowboarding, share the journey and have fun doing it. This year I’m looking forward to another winter in California, riding new mountains and progress my own skills so I keep improving. [singlepic id=10147 w=300 h=533 float=] Days on snow: I’ve been continuing to hit my goal of 100 days each year. Last year I ended with 127 days on snow and was really happy with the amount. I’ll continue to try to hit 100 days and looking forward to the season finally starting. Heath: My foot is still recovering from a bruised heel but I’ve started back at the gym to get ready for this winter. My knees feel in great shape and it was really fun committing to jumping last season. Just hoping for another healthy year, staying outdoors as much as possible and making sure my season is long. Tricks: Last season I got back into jumping and went from small to medium jumps comfortably and playing with grabs. I had a lot of fun on the AcroBags and […]

Winter is rapidly approaching here in Colorado and soon I’ll be hitting the slopes with friends in that happy place. Each season I try to set goals for myself and my riding that are within my reach. I’m coming up on my 16th year of riding and while I certainly am not going pro anytime soon, it doesn’t mean my 16th year of riding can’t be a year of progression and another year of fun. I’m just stoked and ready for winter! Days on snow: Each year I strive for 100+ days on snow. I ended the 08-09 season with 106 days which is my high record since I’ve moved to Colorado. In relation to days on snow is what’s known as keeping-my-day-job which means there are always some powder days I won’t get to ride or deadlines that I have to skip out on riding for…and luckily for me, I still get to ride a lot. Definitely for this year, I will continue to ride as long as I possibly can and I will make the trip out to Mt Hood again.
So while I’m waiting for the rest of the mountain to open I have been thinking about this season’s goals for snowboarding. I like to set goals at the start of the season and see how I did at the end of the season. I’ve found it’s always good to set goals, I always try to meet my goals but also set them at levels I can reach them. Looking back on my seasons as a snowboarder, I’ve had ups and downs as a rider. Days on Snow: I’m well on my way to 100+ days on snow for the 08-09 season, 20 days already for the early season and still have over 4 months of winter left. For those who don’t know, I work a full time M-F job to pay my bills and I still manage to ride throughout the winter. I count any day that I strap into my snowboard, make turns as a day on snow. Whether it’s a ride break that is 2 hours long or a whole day of snowboarding. Health: Going to get this cold taken care of on Monday, after a co-worker reminded me that last winter I spent a […]
