Location: Winter Park, CO Snow Conditions: Softpacked to hardpacked conditions. Setup: I rode the Lib Tech Trice with Roxy Torah Bright bindings and Vans aura boots. Size: 153 First Impression: The Trice rides just like Travis Rice. Fast, charging and handles the mountain like a dream. Weight: Average. Flex: The Trice offers a stiffer, stable ride without sacrificing the fun of it. Between the bindings, it’s torsionally softer so you get quick response from the board. From the bindings to the blunted nose/tail, you have a stiffer flex to help absorb impact and give you a stable ride on the mountain. I sized down with the Trice this year and it still handled and charged the mountain. The T.Rice has C2 technology which is banana rocker between the bindings and camber from the inserts to the contact points. Turning: Quick and responsive. Here’s the deal, last time I rode the Trice, it was the 57 and this time with the 53 it was even better despite the waist width of 25.3. The numbers are dialed and despite being wide, it turns quickly and responds to the rider and the snow. It’s definitely not a board for a beginner but for […]

Location: Winter Park, CO Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to softpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the Arbor Swoon with NOW IPO bindings and Vans Ferra boots size 8. Size: 155cm. First Impression: Offering up easy all mountain riding that you can count on. Weight: Average. Flex: The Swoon fits the medium flex description to a T. It’s longitudinally stiffer so you still have a stable ride down the mountain. The torsional flex between the bindings is a bit softer so you can get quick response from edge to edge. Overall it’s a pretty easy board to ride and isn’t too aggressive. The swoon has the mountain system reverse camber which has parabolic rocker which has more rocker in the center of the board and decreases the rocker to the tip and tail of the board. It’s designed for more mountain riding with the flex. Turning: Turning on the Swoon is easy to engage and an easy board to ride without being too intimidating. You could definitely just enjoy the ride without any consequences on this board. Easy turns on the longer drawn out S turns and when you wanted quick turns, you’d get them. Stable: The grip-tech noticeably helped on the icy hardpacked […]

It’s pretty fun to come to Winter Park when the industry takes over the resort, the base is filled with friends from different companies and there are good times on and off the snow. Last night I enjoyed the Mervin party for the last party of the SIA Snow show and had a later start this morning because of it. But the demo must go on. It’s great to know that I’ll be at the Mission Ridge demo coming up so I can try more gear. Today was another bluebird sunny day with a mixture of conditions. I skipped most of the hardpacked conditions since I got up later than usual. It was fun to take laps with the Never Summer crew. [singlepic id=12994 w=500 h=281 float=] This morning, I headed out to the tents. Stopped into Oakley to get the Canopy goggles, then a helmet at Pro-Tec and then grabbed a setup to start the day on the slopes. Today I rode the YES the Greats with Salomon Absolute bindings, Venture Helix with the same Salomon Absolute bindings, Arbor Swoon with NOW bindings, Bataleon Whatever with Union Milan bindings and GNU Ladies Choice with B-Free bindings.
After four days of being at the SIA Tradeshow in Denver, getting back into snow boots and hitting the slopes always feels great! We headed up to Winter Park last night for a good nights sleep night during SIA (very rare) and hit the slopes early this morning for the on-snow portion. Tons of companies were out on the slopes with their latest 2013 gear for retailers, media and industry. Today I rode the Capita Defenders of Awesome FK with Union Contact Pro bindings, Jones Flagship Carbon with Union Charger bindings, Rome Hammerhead with Rome Mob Bosses, Burton root with Burton Genesis bindings, Endeavor Diamond with Flux GM30 bindings, K2 Highlite with K2 Auto Agogo bindings, Flow Rush with Flow Minx SE bindings. I also demoed the Bern Baker helmet with Dragon APXS goggles and Smith IOX goggles. At the end of the day ran into Annette from Lib Tech and Jesse Burtner from Think Thank.

If there’s one vacation I have to take each year, it’s to the SIA Tradeshow. It has all the components of a vacation: flight, hotel, dinners, drinks but it’s a lot of hard work jammed packed into 4 days of fun inside and 2 days of fun outside. The best part about SIA is the people who are part of this industry, the products are just an added bonus to the whole adventure. I really appreciate everyone who supports shayboarder.com and being part of this industry. It’s a dream and I hope never to wake up. Over the next couple months, you’ll see 4 days of SIA in product writeups that dive into each company and the products they have created for 2012. I couldn’t meet with everyone but I definitely listened to your requests and met with the brands you wanted the most. I also got to check out new brands (for this blog but not new new) like Airblaster, 32, Helly Hansen, North Face, Arnette and many others). I’ll try to review more products as winter progresses and give you a look at what to expect for next winter. But I also want to highlight that the 2011 […]

I had heard that the second day of the on-snow was supposed to be cold but negative temperatures are beyond cold. Negative 10-15 degrees was hard to deal with on the mountain but it was sunny and a good day to demo more boards despite the weather. I stayed out from 9am to 4pm demo’ing 2012 boards. I got to ride with some rad people today; Gorio, Trent from Technine and the Snowboarder Magazine crew who was working on their Best Of Test. I ended up giving my 3 top boards (so far). It was so cold out that the first two runs, my goggles froze completely when some moisture got inside. Luckily I could demo other goggles I ended up riding the Lib Tech box scratcher with Roxy bindings, Bataleon Goliath with Flux RK30 bindings, Ride Farrah with Ride Fame bindings, K2 Fastplant with K2 Auto agogo ltd bindings, Burton Easy Living with Burton Lexa bindings, Unity Reverse with Technine bindings, Salomonder with Salomon absolute bindings. I also tried out a RED helmet and Anon goggles for the day. And thanks to Coal for hooking me up with a warm facemask for the slopes. [singlepic id=10640 w=1000 h=667 float=] My first run I ran into Kevin Addy from Flow in the lift line and he introduced me to Dale Rehberg now the brand manager for NXTZ. We ended up taking fast laps for a run together. As soon as I came down with them, got to make another lap with Mike West owner of 686.
What a long week it’s been, SIA and then the on-snow, then the death cough…well I’m finally getting back to blog business and thinking about the on-snow demos, writing the reviews up and getting ready to post them starting next week. SIA is really the time to see all the products but I always wait till I get to try them out in the element of the snow to determine if I like them or not. This year the on-snow was only 2 days long which wasn’t enough time, so I only ended up riding a couple boards & bindings each day. From the two days, here’s what I learned: -Union steps it up with the new toe straps and continues to be a very popular binding at the demos. I was able to take out the men’s flite and forces for next year. -Riding with no-backs is an interesting test, skate feeling and I will say I didn’t hate it. I can see why some of the signal guys and old school guys rock the no-backs on the mountain. More to come in a blog post of course. -The black snowboard of death is back and better than ever…good […]
