Location: Steamboat, CO Snow Conditions: Mixture of hardpacked to slushy groomers. Setup: I rode the Sierra V-spot with my Union bastardized bindings and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 151cm. First Impression: This board is soft and so easy to butter up the mountain with. Weight: average Flex: The V-spot is one of the softer women’s boards I’ve been on, super soft park flex from tip to tail which makes it an all around easy ride. The flex is on the softer side torsionally and longitudinally. It reminded me of a women’s park rocker or horrorscope for how soft it was and when you pressed it rose from the snow faster than expected. The flex made it pretty forgiving on the slopes, you could make mistakes and it wouldn’t punish you. Turning: Very easy board to initiate into turns and maneuver on edge, quick response from edge to edge. Shorter radius turns felt best on the V-spot while the longer S turns you worked harder to keep them in the turn and not turn quicker. It’s a really forgiving women’s snowboard, so harder to catch edges and it won’t punish you for riding mistakes. Stable: The softer flex and smaller […]

Last week I announced a snowboard contest based around how your snowboard crews make you a better snowboarder something that everyone around the world could relate to and give away a couple sierra crew snowboards in the process. The results were clear, so many great responses, stories and experiences that can only be shared by “we” and not “I” on the mountain. When it came time to determine the two winners (male and female), I went to my friends Philip and Amy who are part of my riding crew to decide who would take home the price and after reading each of the entries, they have decided on winners (though not easily). [singlepic id=7667 w=500 h=375 float=] Congratulations to our two winners! Bug Stroope for the men and Kristin McManus for the women. Here are each of their writeup’s and congrats on winning a Sierra Crew snowboard! Thanks to everyone who entered the contest by sharing their crew experiences, we really had some great entries that were hard to pick winners from! Bug’s write up “What a great topic to talk about, thanks for the contest. As for my crew, we roll deep and look out for each so closely, […]

They say there are no friends of powder days but some of my personal best days of snowboarding have been shared with friends regardless of powder, groomers or ice. Having friends on the mountain can make your tricks more dialed, your laughs louder and your chairlift rides much more fun. They bring out the best of who we are and sometimes they come and go through our lives, but who we ride with makes us who we are as riders. To celebrate our snowboard crews, those friends we spend countless days on the mountain with…I want to hear about your snowboard crew and how they make you a better snowboarder. I’m going to have two winners, one male and one female and you’ll each win a sierra crew snowboard! [singlepic id=7667 w=500 h=375 float=] All you have to do is leave a comment (make sure to have your name, sex, correct email address in the comment) that explains how your crew makes you a better snowboarder. Please put in a comment by Friday, February 12th and I’ll announce a winner on Monday, February 15th. I’m going to have some of my crew of friends help determine the winner of this […]

There’s still a couple of sierra snowboard members/staff in town so today I was able to take my ride break and join some of the crew for shred time. Since the arrival of sierrasnowboard, it’s been snowing in town which is helping the mountain look more like Steamboat again. Sierrasnowboard continues with the collaboration boards which were out being tested by the staff today. [singlepic id=7516 w=400 h=300 float=] We headed up to the Wally World area on the mountain (Sunshine chairlift) and found some fun trees to play in plus ride the groomers. Yesterday, the sierrasnowboard staff did the Steamboat powdercats tour so they had a wickedly good powder day to recover from.
Today was the last and final day for Bruizzapalooza and finally the snow gods delivered to Steamboat! I woke up at 7am, looked outside and saw a couple inches of new snow at my house which meant double that amount on the mountain. By 8am, I was geared up and by 8:30am when the gondola began loading passengers we were headed up the mountain for some freshies. Since it hadn’t snowed in Steamboat, the gondola lines were full of familiar faces and a lot of people ready for the new snow to finally hit. Mike and myself in line [singlepic id=7499 w=400 h=300 float=] The new snow also brought in high winds on the mountain which kept Storm Peak closed for the day. Our group talked on the gondola about where to ride and so Storm’s closing changed that for the day so we headed over to Pony Express and Bar-UE for the day. Conditions were low visibility, cold but some deep snow in spots with some windpacked nothing in spots. Lone tracks ahead [singlepic id=7500 w=300 h=400 float=] I focused on riding and enjoying the conditions without taking a lot of photos but I did get some clips on […]

The sierrasnowboard community started Bruizzapalooza last year and this year Steamboat Springs, Colorado is one of five stops for meet-ups and shred sessions. Over 100 members made their way to Steamboat on Friday and will be riding together this weekend. I met up with everyone at the evening’s cocktail party to meet and greet for the night. It’s pretty amazing to see members from online communities come together and meet up in person. You might not know Matt but you know his member name Mattaleo so it’s always funny at introductions. I was able to meet members and they know me as shayboarder so it was fun to put names to faces especially when they have commented on the blog. [singlepic id=7485 w=400 h=300 float=] Marty and Mike who runs sierrasnowboard [singlepic id=7484 w=400 h=300 float=] After the cocktail party died down, we made our way to Tugboat to end the evening with music and drinks before calling it a night.
We were planning to ride A-Basin today but with such a beautiful day and less people at Loveland yesterday, we ended up back at Loveland. It was a definitely busier today but still more ride time than lift line time. The view of Loveland surrounding people strapping in. The lift lines weren’t too bad Spent the morning making laps down the two open runs on the mountain. For a while it was a mine field…I guess the beginners decided today was a perfect day to learn. I really wish people would take at least a lesson on how to turn and stop before going out to the masses on the hill. Bru coming down the run. I met Bru through sierrasnowboard.com and finally got the chance to ride with him. Around lunch time I got a call from a friend who was in the parking lot. My friends Amy, John and Jakub had drove down and saw my truck a couple rows ahead. We took a break from riding to head down, meet up with them and enjoy their fine BBQ in the parking lot skills. Best beer and burger ever!
Snowboarding in the midwest is in distress right now as one of their snow resorts might be closing. I’ve never rode the midwest but hearing that a resort might be closing, limiting the opportunities for local shredders to ride is worth checking out and seeing what can be done to save another snow resort. Ben Simon from the sierrasnowboard.com forums wrote up a piece about the possibility of this resort closing and what people can do to help. “As a snowboarder currently living in St. Louis, Missouri, snowboarding is already difficult enough. Unfortunately, St. Louis’ local ski hill (Hidden Valley) is in danger of being shut down, leaving thousands of St. Louis skiers and snowboarders without a place to ride and hurting local outdoor sporting goods stores (take away the one place to ski and snowboard in St. Louis, and ski and snowboard sales plummet in St. Louis). For anyone living in the Midwest, you know how hard it is to be a skier or snowboarder. Unfortunately, skiing and snowboarding are in danger of becoming even more difficult to enjoy if St. Louis’ single resort (and the closest resort in a radius of 8 hours) closes its doors forever. Matteo: My name is Matteo Mezzetti and I was born in Sacramento, California. I have always enjoyed being involved in board sports since I was little, which prompted me to start snowboarding when I was eleven. I like individual sports because they require you to count on yourself instead of others as well. I currently attend California State University-Sacramento. I have no clue about my major, but I will enroll in the Coast Guard in about 1-2 years. I enjoy where I work and could not ask for a better job then to sell stuff that pertains to the sport I love most. Shay: What snowboard shop do you work for? Matteo: Sierra Snowboard & Ski, and www.sierrasnowboard.com Shay: How long have you worked there? Matteo: I’ve been there for about 2.5 years now. Ever since I was 16.5 years old. It’s been fun. Shay: What is your job title? Matteo: Either hardgoods salesman or snowboards salesman. Shay: Did your parents question your job choice?
