Location: Mammoth, CA Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to softpacked groomed runs. Setup: I rode the Signal OG with my Union Team bindings and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 155cm. First Impression: The original series – it’s been around the block and camber knows how to keep on riding. Weight: Average Flex: The OG had a stiffer flex longitudinally but also felt like the nose was softer than the tail of the board. Both were still on the stiffer end for flex, torsionally I thought it was stiffer as well. It’s still an all mountain freestyle board but definitely on the stiffer end of the spectrum. The OG is also traditional camber. For me I like going back to camber snowboards every now and then, they are consistent in how they ride and can keep you on your toes for not slacking off while riding. Turning: I really liked the long radius turns with the OG, as wide and long as I wanted down the runs were perfect. The shorter radius turns I thought weren’t as quick to get into it mostly due to the stiffer flex and probably my boot size in relation. Being back on camber meant riding on […]

With June Mountain closing, it was an easy decision to plan to ride June one day this weekend before they close for the season. We packed up the car, loaded it up with our gear, picked up the aussie crew and headed up the highway for the easy drive to June. On the way, I got the call that my brother was driving into town and would meet up for riding. It worked out perfectly for timing and it was a great decision for June. There were no lines and a mix of sunny to cloudy conditions but the mountain and parks were ours. For most of the day, the skier and Nosey switched out filming each other. The shots ended up coming out great especially the follow cam [singlepic id=11412 w=500 h=334 float=] It was a blast riding with everyone, especially getting out with my brother who normally wouldn’t ski the park. We ended up getting him to get air and he did hit a jump by the end of the day! Here’s one of his airs of the day.
Living in Mammoth Lakes has been a dream and having Mammoth in my backyard has been better than imagined but having June nearby is the icing on the cake. It’s a different vibe than Mammoth and it reminds me of the ski hills back home (not resorts) except with amazingly good parks. I’ve had great pow days and great park days at June this year and today was a day to get back there before they close up for the season on April 24. The skier and I headed up for park laps with a borrowed GoPro for the day to get in some footy. We ended up meeting Sam, June’s Terrain Park Manager at the top of the park and talked to him for a bit. This whole season I’ve been really stoked on June’s parks, the easy stuff for me to the bigger stuff for the skier. Sam was with the Signal Snowboard crew in town to film a Every Third Thursday Video coming up. Can’t wait to see how it comes out!
As one of the few snowboard companies with their own factory building snowboards in the United States, Signal Snowboards continues to build boards based around the fun factor. From their insanely soft park rocker to their reverse camber omni, they have rocker boards for a variety of riders but also continue to build traditional camber boards like the OG Series. For 2010-2011, Signal has added some wide models to the Omni, OG and Park Rocker making the boards accessible for all boot sizes.
Location: Breckenridge & Steamboat, Colorado Snow Conditions: Mixture of weather with hardpacked groomers to overcast on new snow. Setup: I rode the Signal Omni with my Union Force SL’s and my Bonfire Geo boots. First Impression: Definitely not what I was expecting but a nice surprise on signal’s take to reverse camber. Size: 156cm Weight: lighter than average Flex: The omni isn’t as stiff as some other reverse camber boards I’ve ridden, it’s on the softer side compared to them but it isn’t a soft flexing snowboard. It’s stiffer longitudinally with a softer torsional flex that gives you really quick edge to edge response when riding and the longitudinal flex helps keep the board stable on the mountain. I actually found this board a easy and predictable ride for the mountain. The omni’s reverse camber so it has camber between the feet, rocker from your feet out to the tip and tail. I didn’t ride it in deep powder but in smaller amounts of powder, the reverse camber helped float and felt comfortable while staying centered on the board. Turning: This is where the omni excels, groomers and carving. This board can rally on edge through short and long radius […]

When it comes to snowboard factories in the United States there are few and far between but in southern California lies The Lodge – Signal Snowboards factory. Built around the motto, “dream it, built it, ride it” and they do, even from the parking lot. Signal was the third stop on my California adventure in two locations: The Lodge that is located in Huntington Beach and their office located in Vista, I sought out both to get the full feel for the company beyond the carpet of SIA and what I found was the value and personal touch in building snowboards. I met with Mike Akins, Marc Wierenga and Dave Lee to get the tour of Signal’s Factory and later on the next day, a stop at the Signal office. [singlepic id=6568 w=300 h=450 float=] Marc Wierenga and Dave Lee handling business [singlepic id=6567 w=400 h=267 float=] Signal currently is building 80 boards a day and getting the last boards of the season pumped out so shredders can be riding them soon. Everything starts in the wood shop where the wood is made into wood cores that become everything about the snowboard.
