Years ago, I used to live in a quaint mountain town called Steamboat Springs, Colorado where I’d spend every day riding the local mountain. Even though it’s been over 10 years since I called Steamboat home, it’s one of my favorite places to visit because it holds a special spot near and dear to my heart. There’s still the favorite stashes, the local watering holes, and the amazing people who make up the community around the mountain. I’m lucky to return to my old stomping grounds at least once a year. Thanks to the direct flight from Seattle to Hayden, it was a 2 hour flight and 45 minute drive before we were slopeside at Steamboat Resort. We even enjoy a First Class upgrade on the way out. We arrived in the evening but that meant we’d be fully charged to hit the slopes the next day. It’s been a good year for Steamboat with the town receiving over 230″ of snowfall so far. It looked like we might be lucky with our trip and a storm rolling through but it shifted course on our last day in town. Even while there was no new snow, we did manage to […]

After a busy Opening Weekend, a relaxing Monday on the slopes was perfect. I headed up with the skier to make park laps with him and get back into the swing of winter. The A51 terrain park has about 25 features up right now and a whole line of box features for those seeking a more mellow terrain park line. Starting this season out on the Arbor Swoon (which I rode previously). Looking forward to Colorado demo days and reviewing gear when I can. Been rocking the Bent Metals from last year as well and will be switching to Burton Escapades as the season goes on. Good day getting back on the boxes and having fun with the skier. Can’t complain when it’s early November and can just lap the mountain you work for.

Almost two months ago, I arrived in Colorado just in time to watch the first Rail Jam of the season and for Opening Weekend I got to help out at the second rail jam of the season. Last time I was meeting future co-workers and this time I was helping them out. I loaded up the camera and headed out to watch the action and share it on social media for Keystone. The setup was a flat down box on the far left, double kink rail in the center and a down rail on the right. It was right in the base area so anyone could watch and check it out. Red Bull brought in a massive truck DJ with to keep the audience happy. I shot this photo earlier in the day before any riders had hit it. The rail jam began just after 4pm (when the lifts shut down for the day) and went on through a couple rounds of men’s and women’s skiers and snowboarders. I recognized a bunch of our Keystone team riders, local riders and plenty of new faces. I enjoyed just hanging out, got a bunch of shots for Keystone’s social media and then […]

You can always count on Snowcial to bring together creative minds, social skills and skiers/snowboarders to Heavenly Resort. Last year I got my first taste of it and this year, I attended the welcome party and one day of snowboarding to celebrate the fun event. Unfortunately I couldn’t attend the whole weekend of events since I’m traveling up to Washington but the 24 hours with everyone was a blast. Last night, Snowcial kicked off with the welcome party and poker tournament at Harvey’s Resort in South Lake Tahoe. The hashtag #snowcial has been blowing up with resort and industry skiers and snowboarders making their way to the event. I headed to the event with Ashley Smith who is now working at Heavenly. [singlepic id=12878 w=500 h=500 float=] The fun part of the night is always catching up, meeting new people and playing in the Poker Tournament. This year I did much better at the Blackjack but really sucked at the Poker Tournament. It was a blast being able to hang out with Chris Rudolph from Stevens Pass, Joe Johnson from the Canyons, the marketing team and my buddy Ashley from Heavenly, Harvey and Henrik from Freeskier Magazine, Jon from Snowboard […]

The vibe at June Mountain has always been great. It’s a mountain that is full of good times. I finally talked the skier into joining me for a June day despite the park not being insanely huge right now. We ended up having a great day on the slopes, working on tricks in the mini park. He worked on spins and I worked on hitting more features. There’s still only one run open at June but it’s one run that has soft snow conditions and barely anyone sharing it with you. We worked on switch riding for the run each time and ended up hiking park a lot of the day. Today was a good day for myself. I finally started riding the long lift tower (for some reason metal tubes scare me) and ended up working on bonks on the barrels and a couple tricks on the flat box. Excited to head up to South Lake Tahoe tomorrow to ride Heavenly the next two days. Always fun to check out other mountains and get a feel for conditions around California right now.

Most of the holiday crowds have taken off so the mountain is almost back to normal for January. We headed up a little early in the morning to get the most of the conditions. It was the first time in a week that I was finally able to check out how the mountain conditions are holding up and the lack of snow is starting to show. You could see dirt in spots and there were a lot more rocks on the mountain. The jumps were gone from South Park so we headed over to Main to see what was up and stayed there most of the day. I got my laps in Forest Trail park which is setup really fun right now with smaller jumps and features.

Snow matters. Good snow conditions can help bring out skiers and snowboarders while bad conditions can mean finding other things to do instead of skiing/riding. I got back yesterday into town with a clear drive over Yosemite which is insane that there is no snow on that pass right now. I knew what to expect today: lift lines, manmade snow and a higher injury of collisions because of packed people on slim runs. After taking care of errands this morning, we headed up to the slopes to get our turns in before the masses arrived. Tomorrow I’ll be off the mountain with errands and taking my dog to the Vet but back on snow Thursday. Arbor Coda review is coming up soon!

In my opinion, Park City Mountain Resort has it all. You have amazing parks with tons of jumps and features built to perfection, tons of acreage for freeriders to play on and a vibe that makes you feel welcome and want to come back for more. Plus you can also get a Cobradog. It was a long drive back to Cali from Colorado but a stop at PCMR was definitely worth it. We stayed in Sandy at the Gandee household before cruising up the highway to Park City, found a spot near the base and geared up for a morning on the slopes. Of all the resorts on this trip, PCMR definitely had the best conditions and coverage. It was soft snow that wasn’t too hardpacked or icy and it made lapping chairs so much fun. Even for a Sunday morning, the mountain was busy but it was dispersed out so you never had a line and could enjoy laps without a ton of people on them with you. For the morning, I rode around checking out the mountain and the parks. Taking shots on my iPhone, a couple of which I’ve uploaded here because I really like them.
It feels great to be back in Colorado. It’s well worth the drive from California for a ton of events going on, seeing friends and better conditions. Today we headed to Keystone to get in some early morning laps before the Grand Prix at Copper in the afternoon. The snow conditions had good coverage, parks were filled with skiers and riders jam packed to hit every feature possible and the mountain was busy but you still had space to yourself each run. I’ve been pretty stoked on Epicmix this year so we made sure to get shots on the mountain. Here’s Dan and myself at the top! Keystone has A51 park and a stellar crew to keep the park in great shape despite the train of skiers/riders hitting them all day. There were a ton of features in the parks today and multiple jump lines for any level. The big jump line at Keystone has three huge hits and a constant stream of skiers and riders hitting them. Love watching from the lift. I opted for the easier side of the park, playing on the flat boxes and a buried metal tube before cruising the groomers down to Peru lift.
A detour can lead to many great things. Today’s detour included a morning stop at the Canyons Resort in Utah to get our fix of skiing and snowboarding. The best part of today was the resort to ourselves, soft snow groomers and fun turns with friends. We woke up in Park City and headed to the Canyons, parked and took the people mover to the base, then the gondola up to the slopes. The mountain coverage is great for the runs open right now. For me being at the Canyons was a reminder of the light fluffy snow that Utah offers and the aspen trees that I’ve missed the past year. It’s breathtaking and feels good under the feet. The day started with Dan and myself but later we joined up with Philip, a friend from Colorado. I’ve only been to the Canyons a couple times but they always keep their park creative with what they have. Today was no exception, a mix of boxes and rails through the early season park. Plus a car…yep a car at the end of a box. The day was cut short due to needing to be in Colorado for an event so we […]
