Location: Mammoth, CA Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to icy groomers. Setup: I rode the Smokin MIP with Union Team bindings and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 155cm. First Impression: Wow this board isn’t just for park riding Weight: Average Flex: I was expecting a freestyle board in terms of the flex but the MIP was on the stiffer side for freestyle delivering a board that can handle the mountain. Torsionally in the mid range for flex, not super soft but not stiff. It was average edge to edge but once on edge, you had no problem with stability. Longitudinally, softer nose and stiffer tail making tail presses not as easy but easy to get the nose press up, stiffer under the feet so you felt really comfortable on landings and freeriding. The smoking MIP features anti-rocker so it’s completely flat throughout the entire effective edge and is catch free. Turning: The longer effective edge really did it for the MIP, just made it a smooth board to turn and carve with down the mountain instead of only doing quick turns. The long turns felt really comfortable and locked into from the transition to the end of the turn. It wasn’t […]

It’s rare to hear of snowboards made in the United States but there are still companies that are just outside the mountains in your backyard building your favorite snowboards. In my quest to visit all the US factories, I’ve been to 5 of them in the US and 6 in North America. Each factory has a different story, feel and vibe when you walk in. Despite the same process of wood to snowboard, it’s worth checking out how each brand makes it their own. Smokin Snowboards has been building snowboards for 13 years, started in Lake Tahoe and is now located just outside of Reno in Sparks, NV. I knew that moving to California finally meant checking out the Smokin factory in person so last week, I did!
Location: Winter Park, CO Snow Conditions: Hardpacked snow conditions that softened up during the day with bluebird skies. Setup: I rode the Smokin PYT with Union Force bindings and Vans Veil Boots size 8. Size: 152cm. First Impression: It’s surprising that anti-rocker is on this board but the anti-rocker takes the jib board to a whole new level for what its capable of. Weight: average Flex: Despite being a jib board, the PYT is on the mid level for flex. It’s not an insanely soft park board, but it’s not stiff either. It can handle the mountain but also offer a playful freestyle flex for the park. I found it stiffer in between the feet and softer on the nose and tail. The flex gave it some stability riding but also a fun easy going ride when you wanted it to be. The PYT features anti-rocker which is completely flat throughout the entire effective edge. Turning: The PYT was very good on edge to edge response, definitely not as forgiving of a ride because the response was so quick to turn on you. Once on edge it really was easy to hold on edge for the full carve into turns […]

Smokin Snowboards comes out of the smoke each year with a solid line of snowboards handmade in Lake Tahoe and with no problem speaking their mind about the direction of snowboarding. They’ve introduced a couple new models for 2010-2011 including a new women’s model, all with different options for rocker/camber. For 2010-2011, Smokin has a mix of camber/rocker technology with traditional camber, DIRT Rocker (flat binding to binding, rocker binding to tips), Clash Rocker (positive camber outside the bindings, rockered between the bindings) and Anti Rocker (completely flat throughout the entire effective edge). They’ll be offering a 3 year warranty on all of their snowboards and introducing the bummer replacement program to help support the rippers who support them which “entitles any customers with a non-warrantable issue to replace their snowboard at cost for the duration of their 3 year warranty.” Smokin Super Offender and KT-22 Smokin Super Offender features Anti-Rocker, magne traction, true twin, park flex Sizes: 152, 156, 159 Smokin KT-22 features Clash Rocker, magne traction, directional, freeride flex Sizes: 154, 156, 159, 159W, 162, 162W, 166, 166W, 172 [singlepic id=7681 w=900 h=600 float=] Smokin Midget Mafia Pro and Big Wig (upside down) Smokin Midget Mafia Pro features […]

This review was done at the Transworld Good Wood test as I tagged along with the test and tried out boards. Location: Breckenridge, Colorado Snow Conditions: Overcast with hardpacked groomers to icy groomers. Setup: I rode the Smokin Vixen with Union Force’s and my Rome Vamps size 8. First Impression: Despite the smaller size, it held up for the mountain without sacrificing good edge hold. Size: 153cm Weight: Average Flex: The Vixen was on the softer flexing side but had a stiffer torsional flex between the bindings and softer nose and tail which meant it was still up for charging without feeling chatter under the bindings and had good dampness underfoot for absorbing some cruddy conditions. The nose and tail were softer, making it easy to press and butter in the park. The Vixen I rode had Dirt rocker which is a flat section between the bindings and gradual reverse camber from the bindings to tip and tail. The Dirt rocker was barely noticeable, rode very similiar to camber for carving but with the extra bonuses of rocker, easier to press. Turning: This was where the Vixen excelled for the all mountain freestyle board, it was still able to carve […]
