2013 marks the 10 year anniversary of Endeavor Snowboards and a year committed to the future. This Canadian snowboard company has continued to grow their brand and make their mark on snowboarding. Big steps have been taken for Endeavor in the past year. They’ve grown their office space to build the Archtype Snowboard Lab and continue to set their sights on the future of Endeavor. On my way back from Whistler, I cruised through Vancouver to stop into their office space and check out the lab that I’ve been hearing about. Located near the shipping docks and industrial offices, Endeavor stands out among the crowd of business places with their artwork giving away the building. I met up with Max Jenke for the late afternoon tour of Endeavor. A couple brands are inside the Endeavor Design Inc and the offices feature a showroom and photography studio for Scott Serfas. Scott just displayed his work at the Pro Photographer Showdown in Whistler during Telus Festival. The showroom for Airhole and Endeavor snowboards, bindings and luggage is right when you walk into the building. To start our tour, Max put his espresso skills to the test and created hot chocolates for his […]

Frequency fits a different mold than your average snowboard magazine; the quarterly publication is focused on high quality and limited advertising which is rare in snowboarding. Founded in 2001, Frequency: The Snowboarders Journal has grown to become a popular magazine for snowboarders wanting more than a throwaway magazine and the editorial/photography speaks for itself when published in a coffee table style journal. Located in Bellingham, Washington the office houses Frequency: The Snowboarders Journal, Ski Journal and Flyfish Journal. The new location that they are now housed in is more remote than their previous downtown Bellingham location but also offers a quiet workspace environment and you’d never guess such a quality magazine is in this location. [singlepic id=8900 w=267 h=401 float=] Upon entering the Frequency office, Jamie Lynn greets you at the door in the portrait done by Matt French.
Ride Snowboards has been a main component of the northwest’s snowboarding culture since 1992 with quality, innovation and fun as their motto. They have been constantly growing but keeping with their signature ideas and beliefs that it’s just about the Ride. They’ve experienced moves in the process but are still in the heart of Washington building snowboards, boots, bindings and outerwear based around uncompromised fun. With a shared office in the industrial section of Seattle, Ride Snowboards isn’t far from the mountains where they can test, build and design products for a quick turnaround on feedback. Despite being owned by a larger corporation, the individuality still stands strong. I arrived at the Ride Snowboards offices on Thursday afternoon to see what Ride Snowboards is like behind the doors and inside the company. [singlepic id=7909 w=400 h=267 float=] Inside the lobby is quite comfortable and you can see all the companies involved under the Jarden Corporation umbrella but in these offices it’s all the snowboarding/outdoor companies like Ride and K2. This visit was for Ride Snowboards so I’ll be back to get the K2 tour someday.
Two weeks ago I traveled to California with the sole mission to visit as many snowboard companies as I could, give away a snowboard and spend time with family. The end result was an amazing time on the west coast, a glimpse into the so-cal shred company life and the ability to see behind doors that some of us might never see. I had no reason to fly to southern California but when I knew I was going to northern California it only made sense to make a slight detour for the blog. It was my first trip where I was alone traveling which meant making sure I didn’t get lost and staying with friends along the way (thanks Justin and Moss!). The experience that came out of it was 48 hours of snowboard companies, good conversations and being able to check out some companies I’m fond of (unfortunately not all of them). For me personally the most memorable tour was Signals Factory because it was the first time I’ve been hands on in a factory, working with Dave to make an edge and then being able to hand paint the OG topsheet. But overall everyone I visited was such […]

Arbor brings a responsible consciousness to the table when it comes to building and designing snowboards. With a heavy skate, surf and art influence that Venice expresses and Arbor showcases, it’s no wonder that Arbor snowboards continues to support their roots. Just seconds from the Venice boardwalk houses one of the most environmentally friendly snowboard and skate companies in the industry. The journey to Arbor snowboards was the last stop on my California trip but offered a glimpse into the influence from location to company. What stands out among Washington Blvd in Venice is the bamboo influence that surrounds the entry of Arbor Snowboards. I arrived on scene with Arbor rider Moss Halladay who was my coach at Windell’s Camp this summer. We were able to meet up with Drew and Matt to get the full tour of Arbor Snowboards. [singlepic id=6710 w=267 h=400 float=] Upon entering the Arbor office, you are greeted by an abundance of open space and light that just exudes from the old building that now houses Arbor and you can’t miss Brian ready for helping you find your way.
Since I’ve been snowboarding, Dragon has always been there as a consistent leader among goggles on the mountains. With their signature logo that many wear on and off the mountain they remain true to who they are, what they support and continue with a steady stream of quality product from the snow to everyday use. Dragon was the second stop on day two as I made my way into Carlsbad, the home for many companies within snowboarding. With surfing and skating easily accessible, it was no surprise to see wetsuits lining each company’s parking lot that I visited during the visit. [singlepic id=6629 w=400 h=267 float=] Walking into Dragon Alliance, their typical office workplace was transformed into walls of art that took over the blank office space walls to greet you upon entry. Stacks of shred/surf/skate magazines were available for your glance as you waited to be taken upstairs to the offices.
What started out as a binding company has grown to become the number two binding company around the world. Flow has now become a triple threat with snowboards, boots and bindings to compliment each rider on their journey in the mountains. After 10 years of doing their designs, its no surprise that other companies now have similiar products and regardless whether it’s a love or hate relationship, they stand firm in progressing their product designs. Flow snowboards was the second stop of day two as I made my way south along the southern California coast hitting up the massive spread of snowboard companies. With an office in San Clemente Flow Snowboards might be disguised as a typical work office but upon entering you soon found the many posters, product, people and vibe that make it not your typical workplace. [singlepic id=6602 w=400 h=267 float=] Flow is no stranger to having a heavy line up of riders that win contests [singlepic id=6599 w=400 h=267 float=] Mark who handles the Flow Blog (FLOG) and his dog Thrasher were on hand to give me the tour of the office. Thrasher made sure to point out any possible paranormal sightings along the way.
It’s easy to imagine that snowboard publications are massive but in reality the people behind our favorite words, photos and events are a lot more home grown than you’d expect. Snowboarder has a huge name in the industry and continues the tradition of the passion of riding within a mix of written content and photograph evidence. The Snowboarder Magazine office was the second stop on the California adventure to visit their office in San Juan Capistrano. It was hard to imagine that just off I-5 lies a major player for snowboard magazines and an editor at the helm of the ship that many consider an icon in snowboarding. The crew was at lunch when I came by the office, so Pat swung back to pick me up and we headed to the local pizza place for their Wednesday $1 pizza’s before heading into the Snowboarder Magazine office to get the full tour. [singlepic id=6584 w=400 h=267 float=] Snowboarder Magazine shares an office with other action sports publications like Powder, Skateboarder among other names. In the back of the office lies the warehouse that stores all the archives of the publications.
The California adventure started with an early flight to Los Angeles on yesterday morning and once I received my rental car, I was off to visiting the snowboard companies in the Southern California area. The first stop of the adventure was 686, the outerwear and apparel company that brings new meaning to a three letter set of numbers. They have technical features, fun designs and an outlook that isn’t afraid to make it known what goes on behind the scenes. What many don’t know is 686 may be perceived as a larger brand but behind the curtain isn’t very many employees (around 20 or so) that keep the business running. I met up with Kristin Cusic Vice President of Marketing to get the full tour of 686 and check out the happenings behind a small company gone big.
