Since 1979, Dakine has been making a variety of products from luggage to gloves, backpacks to accessories that are designed to be functional for any skateboarder, mountain biker, outdoorsmen, snowboarder or skier. The basic principals are quality, function and style which are present throughout their entire line. The Dakine Headquarters are based in Hood River, Oregon. The perfect location for year-round outdoor adventurers and that clearly shows in the products they create, the offices full of toys and the people behind the brand. On my way back from Mt Hood, it was worth the drive to Hood River to stop in and see what the Dakine headquarters were like. Upon entering the building, the walls are surrounded with images from surf to snow, bike to just plain gnarly. Their past, present and future are clearly defined on the walls throughout the entire building. The door of Dakine stickers go back quite a few years. I recognized the first Dakine sticker I had from the late 90’s almost immediately. Pretty rad to see the collection present in the production room. One of the best perks about being located in Hood River is designing a pack, building it and testing it within […]

“It’s not seeing different things, it’s seeing the same things differently” – that simple thought helped define Spy Optics. In 1994, a group of action sports and motorsports enthusiasts wanted to make sunglasses better and Spy Optics was born to fulfill that demand. Now you can live through their lens to fulfill your passion whether it’s sport, art, music, design, fashion or lifestyle. Over the years, they’ve taken many routes but now the focus remains on the Spy brand and continuing what they started. The Spy Global Headquarters in Carlsbad are located in a business center just minutes from the ocean spray and scenic beaches. From outside, the Spy vans line the parking lot and wet suits are seen drying in the sunshine. A huge thanks to Spy’s Regional Sales Manager Charlie Ninegar who invited us down and gave us the tour. I arrived at Spy just after 2pm when most of the office was ending early for the weekend. Since the new management took over, Friday’s end at 2pm just in time to start the weekend early and enjoy the California sunshine. The entryway featured sunglass and goggle cases with all the models that Spy creates. The product designers […]

Since 1966, Vans has stood for authenticity in lifestyle, music and action sports through their footwear. Over the years, the brand has gone through different owners and is now owned by VF Corp. Under the umbrella lies Pro-Tec which was founded in 1973 and is the original action sports protective gear brand. The same interests that started the company have continued to grow with the name and the expansion of Vans into clothing, footwear and snowboard gear. I’ve owned Vans boots for a decade for their durability and worn their shoes for even longer, every step of the way. It may look like your typical office building from the outside but once you get closer the Vans checkered image is all over the headquarters in Cypress, CA. Upon entering the doors at Vans, a huge Vans photograph greets you with a pleasant reminder of the history behind the company and the development of the brand through the So-Cal skateboarding scene in the 70’s. We waited in the lobby for our tour guide, Vans/Pro Tec product developer Jesse For the past 18 years, Vans has utilized their 45 year footwear experience to build snowboard boots that are a reflection of […]

Red Bull needs no introduction; the energy drink company makes the most popular energy drink in the world with 4 billion cans sold each year, their name and logo is recognizable and they are one of the biggest non-endemic companies to promote action sports. Their promotion of a fun and active lifestyle is linked harmoniously to winter sports and action sports. It’s quite common to see Red Bull sponsor many of the biggest events, names and movies in snowboarding. The Red Bull North America office is located in Santa Monica, California but you’d never know just by driving by. The big brick office building is silent from the outside with any identifying Red Bull logos/titles and you enter through a security gate to gain access into the company. Closer to the building, you get a sneak peak that you’ve arrived at Red Bull and security greets you pleasantly. We talked with Security upon arriving and found that they enjoy drinking Red Bull but also that it’s a great place to work. Inside we introduced ourselves and while waiting, were told to grab a Red Bull to start the day. Our friend Pat Stahl set up the tour with with Raechel […]

All it takes is an idea and the drive to create something which is what Dan Reid did when he started Casual Industrees with his brother Brendan in the late 1990’s. From their Mt Baker days they went forth with a clothing company that was about the WA roots, they continue to be a multi-hundred company with their homegrown roots and local designs. Their softgoods continue to be a favorite of mine, from their Wa Brah outline to their chairlift that graces the shirts; they signify exactly what I miss about the northwest which is that it’s all about representing your roots. Located at Dan’s house in West Seattle, the Casual Industrees headquarters aren’t your typical snowboard office..I figured that out when Dan opened the door in his bathrobe. However just below in the basement and garage lives a company that focuses on softgoods with a northwest touch to it. [singlepic id=8890 w=400 h=300 float=] Last week Dan was my tour guide through the Casual headquarters which required showing off his workspace like the kitchen/break room. He did change out of the bathrobe for the tour but I missed getting a shot of him in it.
What began as an online shop in 2001, evo then expanded to become a brick and mortar shop with a retail location in Fremont neighborhood of Seattle, Washington where they bring a venue, retail space and art gallery into one building seamlessly. Years later they continue to offer their services online or in person with quality products and services. They aren’t your typical snowboard shop and it’s clear once you step into the doors of evo that you’ve entered into a shop where the employees work as a team and the company believes in building a community around sport and art. evo was my snowboard shop when I lived in Seattle and despite moving thousands of miles away, they continue to be a shop I support because of the people behind the company and the personality they bring to snowboarding. They bring as much community involvement to their events and galleries that you wish you could fly out just to be part of it.
Zumiez is known as the mall skate/snowboard shop that caters to the younger demographic but for many places it can be the only skate/snowboard shop and with multiple stores around the country they are one of the most known shops despite not being “core”. In my own personal case, I bought my first setup from Zumiez in Seattle back in 1994 when it was my local snowboard shop. Despite their large corporation appearance, the employees that run the company behind the scenes are young and just as interested in skate/snowboarding as anyone else on the mountain. Zumiez has stores across the country but their headquarters are based out of Everett, Washington just north of Seattle. The headquarters is where the magic happens which impacts the thousands of stores around the country. This office houses the buyers to accounting to handling the online sales. [singlepic id=8261 w=267 h=400 float=] When you walk into the Zumiez headquarters, a comfy couch is there to greet and remind you of your local store. At least for me it did, you know the couch setup with the snowboard dvd’s you could watch for hours without being bothered. Located near downtown Seattle, Spacecraft is tucked away with only the numbers 227 and a bright orange door to let you know you’ve arrived. I arrived at Spacecraft on Thursday afternoon to meet with Spacecraft’s marketing director Ryan Davis and check out what goes on at the Spacecraft offices.
