Since 1966, Vans has stood for authenticity in lifestyle, music and action sports through their footwear. Over the years, the brand has gone through different owners and is now owned by VF Corp. Under the umbrella lies Pro-Tec which was founded in 1973 and is the original action sports protective gear brand. The same interests that started the company have continued to grow with the name and the expansion of Vans into clothing, footwear and snowboard gear. I’ve owned Vans boots for a decade for their durability and worn their shoes for even longer, every step of the way. It may look like your typical office building from the outside but once you get closer the Vans checkered image is all over the headquarters in Cypress, CA. Upon entering the doors at Vans, a huge Vans photograph greets you with a pleasant reminder of the history behind the company and the development of the brand through the So-Cal skateboarding scene in the 70’s. We waited in the lobby for our tour guide, Vans/Pro Tec product developer Jesse For the past 18 years, Vans has utilized their 45 year footwear experience to build snowboard boots that are a reflection of […]

Shay: How has snowboarding changed your life? Andrew: Honestly I’m not sure if I would be alive right now if it weren’t for snowboarding. Snowboarding is probably one of the best things that ever happened to me. It gave me an outlet for pretty much everything, It gave me a way to be aggressive and let out things I held back in my everyday life. It gave me room for creativity, it gave me a place to escape to, and a white canvas for unlimited freedom. On top of that Snowboarding has been this great social landscape to connect to likeminded people. Now I consider it my personal goal to give back to snowboarding as much as it gave to me. Shay: How did you get your start in the industry, who or what opened up more opportunities […]

All it takes is an idea and the drive to create something which is what Dan Reid did when he started Casual Industrees with his brother Brendan in the late 1990’s. From their Mt Baker days they went forth with a clothing company that was about the WA roots, they continue to be a multi-hundred company with their homegrown roots and local designs. Their softgoods continue to be a favorite of mine, from their Wa Brah outline to their chairlift that graces the shirts; they signify exactly what I miss about the northwest which is that it’s all about representing your roots. Located at Dan’s house in West Seattle, the Casual Industrees headquarters aren’t your typical snowboard office..I figured that out when Dan opened the door in his bathrobe. However just below in the basement and garage lives a company that focuses on softgoods with a northwest touch to it. [singlepic id=8890 w=400 h=300 float=] Last week Dan was my tour guide through the Casual headquarters which required showing off his workspace like the kitchen/break room. He did change out of the bathrobe for the tour but I missed getting a shot of him in it.
Ride Snowboards has been a main component of the northwest’s snowboarding culture since 1992 with quality, innovation and fun as their motto. They have been constantly growing but keeping with their signature ideas and beliefs that it’s just about the Ride. They’ve experienced moves in the process but are still in the heart of Washington building snowboards, boots, bindings and outerwear based around uncompromised fun. With a shared office in the industrial section of Seattle, Ride Snowboards isn’t far from the mountains where they can test, build and design products for a quick turnaround on feedback. Despite being owned by a larger corporation, the individuality still stands strong. I arrived at the Ride Snowboards offices on Thursday afternoon to see what Ride Snowboards is like behind the doors and inside the company. [singlepic id=7909 w=400 h=267 float=] Inside the lobby is quite comfortable and you can see all the companies involved under the Jarden Corporation umbrella but in these offices it’s all the snowboarding/outdoor companies like Ride and K2. This visit was for Ride Snowboards so I’ll be back to get the K2 tour someday. [singlepic id=7888 w=400 h=267 float=] During my visit, I got to wear a visitor badge […]

Arbor brings a responsible consciousness to the table when it comes to building and designing snowboards. With a heavy skate, surf and art influence that Venice expresses and Arbor showcases, it’s no wonder that Arbor snowboards continues to support their roots. Just seconds from the Venice boardwalk houses one of the most environmentally friendly snowboard and skate companies in the industry. The journey to Arbor snowboards was the last stop on my California trip but offered a glimpse into the influence from location to company. What stands out among Washington Blvd in Venice is the bamboo influence that surrounds the entry of Arbor Snowboards. I arrived on scene with Arbor rider Moss Halladay who was my coach at Windell’s Camp this summer. We were able to meet up with Drew and Matt to get the full tour of Arbor Snowboards. [singlepic id=6710 w=267 h=400 float=] Upon entering the Arbor office, you are greeted by an abundance of open space and light that just exudes from the old building that now houses Arbor and you can’t miss Brian ready for helping you find your way.
The California adventure started with an early flight to Los Angeles on yesterday morning and once I received my rental car, I was off to visiting the snowboard companies in the Southern California area. The first stop of the adventure was 686, the outerwear and apparel company that brings new meaning to a three letter set of numbers. They have technical features, fun designs and an outlook that isn’t afraid to make it known what goes on behind the scenes. What many don’t know is 686 may be perceived as a larger brand but behind the curtain isn’t very many employees (around 20 or so) that keep the business running. I met up with Kristin Cusic Vice President of Marketing to get the full tour of 686 and check out the happenings behind a small company gone big. [singlepic id=6552 w=400 h=267 float=] Walking into 686 you know exactly where you are [singlepic id=6550 w=400 h=267 float=] The first part of the tour was the designers room where it was peacefully quiet since they operate on different hours. Currently they are working on 11-12 outerwear and some changes in store for two years ahead. That is all top secret so […]

Located in the heart of downtown Portland, Holden Outerwear doesn’t blend into the surroundings on the mountains with a easy to spot style of outerwear. With pro shredder Mikey LeBlanc in charge, the company continues to break out designs, colors and styles that riders want more of each season. I stopped by their offices in Portland last Wednesday to check in and see what goes on behind the scenes at Holden. When you first walk into Holden it isn’t your typical snowboarder that greets you at the door but a smooth skiing skier that says welcome to Holden. [singlepic id=6078 w=400 h=267 float=] The Portland office vibe is amazing and beautiful to be in. Holden’s office continues with pieces of outerwear around the office. [singlepic id=6079 w=400 h=267 float=] The first person who greeted me when I walked into Holden was Mikey LeBlanc. He is the man behind Holden, the genius, the shredder. He’s working here in the conference room and on his right was the 10-11 lines for Holden being created and completed. I live, work and play in Gresham Oregon – ½ hour from Portland – ½ hour from Mt. Hood. I am a uberHyper hobby guy. I love everything from cooking to IT consulting. Sometimes I snowboard, sometimes I skate, sometimes I Twitter. I love business and I come from a family line of entrepreneurs so I make excuses to run my own gig instead of working for another company. Did I mention I like art? Well I do. I run a company – which is just me, my lady, my brother and my buddy Jesse – so I can choose any job title I want. Sometimes I change it for the client.
