It’s rare to hear of snowboards made in the United States but there are still companies that are just outside the mountains in your backyard building your favorite snowboards. In my quest to visit all the US factories, I’ve been to 5 of them in the US and 6 in North America. Each factory has a different story, feel and vibe when you walk in. Despite the same process of wood to snowboard, it’s worth checking out how each brand makes it their own. Smokin Snowboards has been building snowboards for 13 years, started in Lake Tahoe and is now located just outside of Reno in Sparks, NV. I knew that moving to California finally meant checking out the Smokin factory in person so last week, I did! [singlepic id=10480 w=300 h=450 float=] Despite the name, Smokin Snowboards doesn’t have billows of smoke when you open the door. Tyson the dog greets you at the start of the trip inside and Smokin Jay Quintin the man behind the snowboard brand is hard at work inside cranking away at the next line up of boards. [singlepic id=10477 w=500 h=333 float=] When you walk into a snowboard factory, you’ll probably notice the […]

There are few snowboard brands built in the United States and even fewer that are built with the mountains just outside the factory. Unity Snowboards based in Silverthorne, Colorado has been handcrafting snowboards since 1995 for high quality and high performance snowboarding. What once was a freeride company is now making waves in the pipes, their boards are now ridden by Olympic bronze medalist JJ Thomas and upcoming riders Zach Black and Dylan Bidez. Despite driving by Unity thousands of times, I knew I needed to visit the factory before I left Colorado. So in the middle of packing I cruised down to Silverthorne, CO to watch the guys build the latest 10-11 snowboards that will be coming out this fall and showcase their factory to you. [singlepic id=9172 w=300 h=450 float=] When you walk into Unity, it’s a full blown factory set up in a storage warehouse. Straight ahead is two levels of factory stages and Pete’s office on the right. [singlepic id=9174 w=300 h=450 float=] Unity stickers cover most surfaces inside the building [singlepic id=9176 w=400 h=267 float=] That will soon become a snowboard but right now it’s many parts of the construction that matter inside of the […]

When it comes to snowboard factories in the United States there are few and far between but in southern California lies The Lodge – Signal Snowboards factory. Built around the motto, “dream it, built it, ride it” and they do, even from the parking lot. Signal was the third stop on my California adventure in two locations: The Lodge that is located in Huntington Beach and their office located in Vista, I sought out both to get the full feel for the company beyond the carpet of SIA and what I found was the value and personal touch in building snowboards. I met with Mike Akins, Marc Wierenga and Dave Lee to get the tour of Signal’s Factory and later on the next day, a stop at the Signal office. [singlepic id=6568 w=300 h=450 float=] Marc Wierenga and Dave Lee handling business [singlepic id=6567 w=400 h=267 float=] Signal currently is building 80 boards a day and getting the last boards of the season pumped out so shredders can be riding them soon. Everything starts in the wood shop where the wood is made into wood cores that become everything about the snowboard.
Last summer I thought to myself how great it would be to visit Mervin Manufacturing during one of my visits back to Washington. But a tour inside Lib Tech is hard to come by so it came down to one man…Norm. He wasn’t able to be my tour guide but he put me in touch with Huntz who was able to show me around and answer any questions I had. Mervin Manufacturing is one of the few snowboard factories in the US and builds their ever-popular Lib Tech, GNU and some Roxy models in this factory. It’s quite the journey to get to Mervin Manufacturing located on the Olympic Peninsula in a town called Sequim. I made the trip on Monday to finally get to see the factory in person. Mervin Manufacturing is in a remote wooded location, gotta travel by boat to get there. Born and bred in Washington, Mervin hasn’t lost touch with their roots and continue to build snowboards in this location that they call “near Canada.” Even when you pull up to the factory, you are very aware you are in Mervin territory. Upon stepping into Lib Tech we went to the […]
