Within minutes, a snowboard film can be downloaded and watched. Instead of the anticipation of waiting weeks for your local shop to get the much requested video; you can now bypass them and get every video that’s released that year without thinking twice. But you should think twice. Think about the film crew that worked hard all winter with their equipment to get the shot, think about the riders who are working their asses off to get a memorable banger section (and probably don’t have health insurance) and think about everyone involved from those editing long hours into the night to the people marketing and constantly getting the word out on the film. If you wouldn’t steal a snowboard or jacket, why on earth would you think it’s acceptable to steal a snowboard film? This year snowboard films were released for a couple bucks on iTunes if you were willing to sacrifice having a dvd in your hands. There were plenty of premieres this fall with more and more tours making the rounds around resorts. Plus the local snowboard shop made sure to stock the shelves with snowboard films, sure it was full price to buy the film but you had […]

There are many definitions for support, whether it’s to maintain or give approval to but what about in snowboarding? Support comes in the way of buying the brands or companies products so that they continue to keep producing what we love about them. If you wouldn’t steal a snowboard or jacket, why on earth would you think it’s acceptable to steal a snowboard film? Every year I hit up the premieres to be able to watch some rad films for a couple bucks, typically it gives me an idea if I’ll go onto purchase the film later on. This fall I was able to watch 9191, NowHere, Tailgate Alaska, Right Brain Left Brain and Respect your Elders. I missed checking out a couple more films that were making their way to Seattle but I’m happy I got to enjoy a good amount so far. Rather than steal any of these films, I choose to attend the premieres and purchase them if I’d like to support them. [singlepic id=6511 w=400 h=264 float=] I’m not rich by any means, I live paycheck to paycheck but I want to support those in our industry who I want to keep around. It means having […]

Right before the season starts, snowboard films do their job of getting me pumped up and stoked for the upcoming winter. Often the music they feature makes its way into my ipod so I can ride to it throughout the season. While I may not be a film critic and have no intention of reviewing snowboard films, I do find favorites each year and these favorite films are what make it onto my bookshelf, into my laptop and are watched over and over. So far this season I’ve been lucky to watch more snowboard films with friends than in previous years. Currently I’ve seen At Once Productions “High Life”, Absinthe “Neverland”, TGR’s “Re: Session”, Think Thank “Cool Story”, Forum’s “Forever”, FODT “Hard to Earn”, Stepchild/Thirty-two “This Video Sucks”, Videograss, Standard Films “Black Winter”, Transworld Snowboarding “Get Real”, Alterna Film’s “Electro” and clips from Burton’s “B” movie.
It’s that time of year when snowboard film teaser are coming out for the 09-10 season, getting you amped from a mini clip of what’s to come. The boys at Absinthe have been working hard on their new film, Neverland and it’s finally out with the teaser and full tour schedule so you can’t miss it. Neverland by Absinthe Films from Absinthe Films on Vimeo. From Absinthe Neverland is a state of mind, a mountain pushed up from the ground by imagination. Anyone can go but most people have trouble with the simple directions: Follow your dreams. This winter Absinthe dropped down the rabbit hole to explore this elusive place and brought back some mind bending tales and a pocketful of surprises. Travis Rice, Dan Brisse, Bode Merrill, Nicolas Müller, Sylvain Bourbousson, JP Solberg, Romain deMarchi, DCP, Marc Frank Montoya, Annie Boulanger, Marie-France Roy, Jules Reymond, Wille Yli-Luoma, Cale Zima, Phil Damianakes, Wolfgang Nyvelt, Kevin Pearce, Eero Ettala, Gigi Rüf and the rest of the Lost Boys continued down the road less traveled and explored some new possibilities during a winter that saw the progression of snowboarding take some giant strides. This place has everything….. come on, I show you. […]

It’s coming up on seven years since I first saw Afterbang and subsequently purchased it. Since then I’ve acquired the full collection of Robotfood films: Afterbang, Lame and Afterlame. In those seven years, they’ve been played hundreds of times in my dvd, friends dvd players, laptop on vacation and it’s quite frankly coming to an end of the journey for them. But I’m not ready to give up, I can no longer find a copy of any of those movies and they’ve become collectors items for us shredders who loved them. So I’m asking you, Robotfood family…please think of all of the snowboarders (myself included) who loved your films and now have played them so often they are dying each time…that we need another way to keep the love on. Please put the Robotfood movies on Itunes. [singlepic id=5125 w=400 h=381 float=] I’d pay to download all 3 films on Itunes, I’d pay to have the eternal rights to watching Robotfood each time I travel with my laptop, I’d pay to satisfy that craving. Every year in the fall as I’m waiting for the snow to fall, your videos are the ones that pump me up. Because they are realistic […]

Last night here in Steamboat Springs, Colorado was the premiere for Warren Miller’s film “Children of Winter.” I’ve watched a few Warren Miller films over the years, a variety of skiing and snowboarding with Warren Miller’s voice until Jonny Moseley become the narrator. The bummer about seeing it in Steamboat is that it promises lift tickets to those who attend and we even had it say that on the screen…but yeah we didn’t get that cool free lift ticket at the end. The crowd in Steamboat was a bit older and it was clear by the entry form selections who the film is directed to (not young ski snowboard bums who ride more than 20+ days a year and make less than 60,000). I wrote up my critique at the bottom of this post…I was not impressed with the film and endorse TGR way over this film this year.
Earlier this month I talked about supporting snowboard films by buying not illegally downloading them. I understand snowboard films cost some money, typically costs more than a regular movie and we all know it’s not 2 hours long like a typical movie. One way to get snowboard films for cheaper but without illegally downloading is through itunes which allows you to pick up current snowboard films that choose the itunes route. So far this year two films have been added to itunes for downloading. And you won’t spend more than $8.00 for either one. While you might be missing out on bonus features, this is a good way to save money and still get your shred fix on. Quiksilver’s “That’s It, That’s All” is available on itunes for $7.99 (Click on photo to get to itunes store) Forum’s “Forum or Against Em” is available on itunes for $5.99 (click on photo to get to itunes store)

I understand how easy it is to download films and yet I have never downloaded a snowboard film. Each year while I would love to buy a lot of films…some years I am limited to what I buy and support. In the end I continue to support snowboard films by paying for them.Regardless how you want to package it…it’s stealing. Earlier this year I had someone come to my blog and steal all my photos from SIA, put their own watermark over it and feel that it was okay to not give me credit for it. I understand this is 2008 and it’s easy to grab anything you want on the internet…but does that make it right? No it doesn’t…it’s still stealing from someone else. I don’t walk up to a resort and yank someone’s Burton board because I think I deserve to have it for free. It’s just another way of stealing from another shredder and we all know that it’s not just films getting stolen today.I didn’t always think that way about downloading and who it would impact. I used to be one of those people downloading music but with the launch of itunes and magically the instant […]
