Location: Keystone & Vail, CO Snow Conditions: Softpacked to hardpacked conditions, softer snow conditions with fresh snow in spots. Setup: I rode the Thrive Renegade with Burton Escapade bindings and Ride Cadence Focus boots. Size: 154 First Impression: Thrive delivers a quiver killer. One board you can ride anywhere that won’t cost an arm and a leg. Weight: Average. Flex: The Renegade is a good middle of the road board for flex, it’s not too stiff and not too soft. Most of the flex forgiveness comes from between the bindings which makes it very maneuverable and responsive. The stiffer spots are from the bindings outwards to the nose/tail for stability. The Thrive Renegade features a hybrid rocker. Rocker between the feet, camber zones under foot that extend out towards the tip and tail, finishing with small rocker zones. Turning: This is where the Renegade excelled. It was quite easy to engage on edge and very reliable in the turning. If you wanted a short radius turn, it was quick and lively to follow through with the arc of the turn. If you wanted a longer, drawn out turn…it delivered without releasing you out of the turn early. Very consistent and […]

Location: Keystone, CO Snow Conditions: Mostly soft packed snow to hardpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the Arbor Coda with my Burton Escapade bindings and Ride Cadence boots size 8. Size: 157cm. First Impression: The Coda continues to offer that all-mountain style of riding wherever you want to go. Weight: Average. Flex: The Coda is Arbor’s all-mountain riding snowboard with a medium flex and the mountain system to handle everything you want to ride. Overall it’s in the middle of the flex scale. The nose is a tad softer with a stiffer tail to allow for powering through turns. Torsionally it’s more responsive, quick edging and longitudinally it’s a bit stiffer to give you more power and stability on the mountain. The Coda features Arbor’s Mountain System Technology designed to ride the mountain with grip-tech, parabolic rocker, directional twin shaping, power ply topsheet, toro tips and rocker flex. The mountain system reverse camber which has parabolic rocker which has more rocker in the center of the board and decreases the rocker to the tip and tail of the board. Turning: This board offers up a solid all mountain ride. It’s torsional flex gives you quick edge to edge response on the […]

Location: Keystone, CO Snow Conditions: Softpacked corduroy to hard packed night riding. Setup: I rode the Never Summer Pandora with Burton Escapade bindings and Ride Cadence Focus boots. Size: 149 First Impression: The Pandora carries on the freestyle flare of the evo but built for women. Weight: Average. Flex: The Pandora is on the softer side but it’s a park board meant to be more playful. The softer flex is between the bindings with a torsional softness to it. It makes it really quick response torsionally. Then underfoot there is a stiffer flex to help with freeriding moments and landings. The Pandora features RC Technology which is a mix of rocker and camber, rocker between the feet and camber just outside both of the bindings. Turning: The Pandora is a really quick snappy board on edge. I even took a picture of my carves on corduroy to show just how responsive the board can be with shorter turns. The longer radius turns weren’t as stable but I also take into account the smaller size board. Stable: The softer freestyle flex of the Pandora holds up for riding the mountain but it’s not as stable as the Infinity or Lotus. It […]

Location: White Pass and Stevens Pass, WA Snow Conditions: Mostly softpacked slushy groomer laps in the spring. Setup: I rode the Endeavor Guerilla with Union Atlas Team bindings and Flow Luxe Coiler boots size 8. Size: 155cm First Impression: The Guerilla offers more all-mountain freestyle packed with multi-camber Weight: average. Flex: All-around on the medium flex of the scale. The Guerilla was ideal for all-mountain everything. Tad softer torsional for quick engagement and response, longitudinally medium of the range. It was consistent all around in the handling. The Guerilla has a traditional camber between the bindings for pop and a 3mm rise of reverse camber out to the contact points for fun, float in snow and hook free ride. Turning: Easy initiation into turns with the lift contact points. Once into the turn, you had the consistency to arc through the turn. Pretty easy board to ride, definitely more all-mountain handling. Stable: The spring slush conditions meant harder packed in the morning and really really soft slush in the afternoon. Most of the days were in the softer slush conditions where the board didn’t hook into the softer snow. A tad loose feeling on the speed hauling runs.
Location: Mission Ridge, WA Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to softpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the Lobster Freestyle Baord with Flux DMCC bindings and Vans Ferra boots size 8. Size: 154cm First Impression: Lobster takes on TBT and delivers with a fun freestyle baord. Weight: Average. Flex: The Lobster Baord is on the stiffer medium flex of the spectrum. It’s not as playful as the jib baords but it’s certainly not a freeride board on the mountain. I noticed due to the TBT design, that the board felt stiffer on the toe and heel of the board with a softer torsional flex. The Lobster Baord has twin TBT which has a wide center base that’s flat with a symmetrical nose and tail TBT. It’s great for park riding but offers stability thanks to the wider base and a forgiving rider on the contact points. Turning: Can always count on TBT to be easy to engage the board onto edge and into turns. I liked how easy the board was for rideability, much more forgiving and fun to carve. It could handle quick turns the best while riding the mountain. Longer ones felt like they wanted to be turned out of quicker. Stable: Thanks […]

Location: Whistler, BC Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to softpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the Endeavor Color with Union Atlas Team bindings and Flow Luxe Coiler boots size 8. Size: 152cm First Impression: The Color is on the prowl with an aggressive streak and fun riding. Weight: average. Flex: The Color is built for freestyle riding, so overall it’s on the softer scale with a softer to mid-range flex. The tip to tail carbon stringers help stiffen it up and give it the more aggressive handling torsionally so that turns are responsive. The RC gives the nose and tail a bit more playfulness for buttering. It’s one of those park boards you can ride the whole mountain with and still ride boxes and rails. The Color is 3mm reverse camber with a subtle concave or arching profile that curves upward, reducing pressure on the contact points of the board. Turning: Just like the last time I rode the Color, it was quick engagement into turns on the mountain. It was the ideal board for Whistler conditions because the mountain was packed full of people that you had to avoid quickly. The sidecut is designed to be quick, aggressive and arcing turns on […]

Location: Mission Ridge, WA Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to softpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the Ride Buckwild with Flux DMCC bindings and Vans Ferra boots size 8. Size: 157cm First Impression: The Buckwild probably has my favorite base graphic of 2013 and the actual ride of the board proves the fun you can have. Weight: Average. Flex: The Buckwild is built for freestyle but with a stiffer flex that generates a lot of pop and power through riding. Overall stiffer freestyle flex (it has a 6 on the scale and I’d agree with that). Stiffer flex from the bindings to the nose/tail of the board with a softer torsional flex for easier turning and response. The Buckwild features twin rocker with a minimal rocker featuring a long, stable flat zone that extends well beyond the inserts into the tip and tail. Turning: Consistently an easy board to engage into turns and handled very well on edge/carving down the mountain. I liked immediately that I could charge with it without feeling unstable at any point, it handled the longer turns very well and you could just rip around on the board. The slimewalls helped absorb the mountain and good edgehold with the cleave edges. […]

Location: Winter Park, CO Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to softpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the Bataleon Whatever with Union milan bindings and Vans Ferra boots size 8. Size: 159cm First Impression: Wow there’s no flat basing on this board, you are either carving or carving. Weight: average. Flex: The Whatever is on the more playful side of the spectrum but it offers a stiffer longitudinally flex so it feels more stable than you’d expect and it allows for more response when it comes to carving and fun playful pop for freestyle. Torsionally it’s softer which gives it quick edge to edge response for turns. The Whatever has freestyle TBT which has a symmetrical nose and tail TBT, medium wide center base is flat and it’s good for all around riding. Turning: I was not expecting the Whatever to be so quick and responsive when it came to turning. It was really quick to engage into turns and you pretty much were always in a carve on this board. It was a bit more aggressive in the carving, quick engagement and held each turn smoothly once in them but it was shocking how quickly you were on edge.
Location: Winter Park, CO Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to softpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the Flow Rush with Flow Minx SE bindings and Vans Ferra boots size 8. Size: 156cm First Impression: Augmented Base Technology actually works on the Rush. Weight: average. Flex: Softer nose and tail on the Rush so you have some playfulness but with a stiffer flex underfoot in the binding/camber areas of the board. The torsional flex is softer allowing for easy engagement and the longitudinal flex is in the medium range. The Rush features I-Rock which is a reverse camber with a convex base for a natural feel on rails and stability in variable conditions. So it’s a mix of rocker with convex base to camber to flat. Turning: Easy to engage and initiate into turns with a very mellow disposition then it allows for more aggressive carves once you are into each turn. It makes for a really fun combination of riding, mellow engagement to aggressive carving later on. Good grip overall from the board. Stable: The Rush excelled at stability. Smooth easy ride down the mountain and handled any conditions that it came across. The ABT was noticeably helping the board on choppy/bumpy snow. […]

Location: Mission Ridge, WA Snow Conditions: Hardpacked to softpacked groomers. Setup: I rode the Salomon Powder Snake with Salomon Halogram bindings and Vans Ferra boots size 8. Size: 156 cm First Impression: I was hesitant about how this would handle on groomers but the Powder Snake could ride the groomers with ease and a bit of playfulness. Weight: Average. Flex: The Powder Snake has a softer tapered nose and tail which helps give it the playful feeling on the mountain. In between the bindings it’s a bit stiffer so you feel more stable on freeriding and holding an edge. Overall it’s a 5 on the flex scale, it’s pretty much middle of the road for flex. There’s softer attributes to it but there’s a stiffer response you get.
