One of the best perks of my job at Alaska Airlines is being able to travel to new mountains. To celebrate our inaugural flight from Los Angeles to Crested Butte, Colorado a few of us from the marketing team were able to hop on the flight, document the inaugural experience, and spend a couple days skiing and snowboarding at Crested Butte Mountain Resort. We had a truly great trip. It was my first time visited Crested Butte despite having lived in Colorado years ago. The town was quaint but had an action-packed main street, Elk Street with shops, galleries, restaurants and bars. We stayed at the Grand Lodge which was conveniently located to the base of Crested Butte Mountain Resort. It was an easy walk to the slopes each day and despite being up on the mountain, they offered great service into getting us into town. The skiing and snowboarding conditions were ideal for December. We had a couple days of sunny Colorado bluebird weather but there was enough fresh snow to still enjoy power turns. Since it was between the holidays, less people were on the slopes which meant more exploring for us!

Yes, that is the real name, which was changed from Manchester by its residents some years back so we could be “different” from all the other Manchester’s in the world. I know, ridiculous, right? Anyways, I grew up snowboarding a small mountain in western Mass called Bousquet where I originally skied for seven years. My grandfather was an instructor and wasn’t stoked when I flipped to “the dark side” at the ripe old age of ten. I ended up at UMass Amherst where I found myself riding the “big” mountains of the East Coast and helped run the UMass Ski and Snowboard Club. Which was basically a club that subsidized the price to ride and party all winter. Bonus! After college I traveled through Central America because why the hell not. Surfed a bunch, partied way to hard and generally enjoyed the third […]

You know it’s a great powder day when the sun comes out to show off all the new snow and goods on the mountain. Despite the holiday rush, today was an awesome day just with longer lift lines. I headed out for a lunch ride break with Dan just in time for some lift openings. It was a split decision but we headed to the backside to get in our lunch turns. Just in time for chair #14 opening which had a good line up going but it was worth the wait. [singlepic id=10417 w=300 h=398 float=] We received a couple feet of new snow which meant some tricky spots where you needed tracks to get out and lots of speed. Our goal was to hit up the hemlocks which is through the backcountry gate and a hike up to drop in. [singlepic id=10418 w=500 h=281 float=] The view of the backside from the hemlocks hike. It was beautiful. People getting powder turns and a lot of people sticking to the one stretch of groomers.
Each year the snowboard magazines decide their top snowboard choices by designing boards tests built around various methodologies. Snowboard Magazine has their Platinum Pick which focuses on the “all-around” board and the list is out for the 2010 Platinum Pick winners. The Platinum Pick methology brings 70 boards to the table (2 all-around boards from each company, roughly 35 companies or so) and tests them at various mountains (Stevens Pass, Keystone, Silverton, Stowe) in multiple conditions throughout the season. Who the testers are is unclear, so we have no concrete idea of who the preferences/stats/rider info but these boards stand out from the masses in the test. Finally they only offer men’s boards in the dirty dozen, even though I ride men’s boards I find that ignoring women’s boards isn’t a step in the right direction. [singlepic id=6296 w=227 h=205 float=] Out of the dirty dozen, I’ve ridden 4 of these boards and 1 board I’m sure is the same construction than when I rode it previously. With the 4 boards I have ridden (Park Pickle, Indoor Survival, Evo-R, Skate Banana, Extr-eco) I certainly would ride them all for all around riding, some are on the stiffer side and […]
